The Sopranos is the series that truly built HBO television...how can you possibly put it anywhere other than number one on this list? That's absolutely absurd.
The Wire is a perfect show absolutely perfect but the greatest show ever is The Sopranos for a multitude of reasons. Not to mention without the success of The Sopranos, no Wire, no Breaking Bad, no Mad Man, no Boardwalk Empire and on and on..The Sopranos brought movie quality production to TV, it made anti- heroes main characters and thus is the Greatest. But like many others have said it is based on opinion. I would say 1. The Sopranos 2. The Wire 3. GoT 4. Oz 5. Six Feet Under
The Wire had a very realistic story and loved that no character was guaranteed to live through it. however it was not quite as addicting as i was hoping for. the slow pace and lack of character likability was disappointing, sorry to any super fans. I prefer Boardwalk Empire over all but agree in the criticism that it started to drop of towards the end.
1. The Wire 2. The Sopranos 3. Game of Thrones 4. True Detective 5. Band of Brothers 6. Rome 7. Deadwood 8. Oz 9. Boardwalk Empire 10. Carnivàle I haven't seen Six Feet Under.
I think BE, Oz and Rome should be higher than GOT, And although TD is Brilliant it's still only had 1 season. I think I like to judge a TV series poll with atleast two seasons.
I like Game of Thrones but it's like WatchMojo is always just pandering to what's popular now and not ranking by overall quality. GoT makes great fantasy TV but the reason that it's at number one beating The Sopranos or The Wire is because it's a modern show popularized by its fans a lot without acknowledging its flaws while the latter shows were back then without all the social media. That's just my opinion anyway.
+tamaqueen317 whats overrated about it? it has amazing acting, characters, storyline and use of CGI. Anything that becomes as popular as it has done is bound to be called 'overrated' by ignorant idiots like yourself!
LOL dude why are you getting so mad about it? I specified it was only my opinion, I didn't even expect this post to get popular. And I only said it gets overrated in the MEDIA and its fans at TIMES. I already said it's a great series, I'm not trying to attack it and yea I agree about the CGI and storyline. I'm not trying to downplay it or anything but it DOES have its flaws I just think it's so hyped up compared to other shows who deserve credit. Look, I'll change the wording with 'overrated' since you seem so worked up about it. And calling someone an ignorant idiot just because they're stating their opinion? Woow..
Yep, opinions exist. In fact, we live in a world where some people think Three's Company is better than Breaking Bad, where some people think plastic cheese is better than a decent cheddar and where some people genuinely, actually, really believe that Jeff Foxworthy is better that cancer. Opinions are crazy.
Joe Caputo No it doesn't. Game Of Thrones might be a good fantasy epic, but it doesn't deserve to call itself a drama. The fact that GRRM left this season decreases the writing quality of the show. It's now very pandering to social justice and it's getting more predictable, seriously who didn't see Jon Snow's resurrection coming from miles. The production value of the show remains great though. However, The Sopranos can be considered the peak in TV shows. The writing remains one of (if not THE) best we've seen. Every character and plot line was incredibly fleshed out and the acting is unbelievable (especially the fight between Carmella and Tony at the end of season 4). Game Of Thrones is good, The Sopranos is fantastic.
+Mees "good show" nah man it's great a "good" show would be something like The Walking Dead. Game of Thrones is the most detailed show its crazy. I personally didn't like The Sopranos that much it was great but I didn't like it. Game of Thrones is good because of the character development, the foreshadowing, and the multiple story lines that are all going to tie together. It's better than the Sopranos
Joe Caputo Detailed in what way? Set and costume design, I'd say that goes to Rome or Band of Brothers, but Game Of Thrones has great set and costume design aswel. Game Of Thrones character development has gotten messy. Arya Stark is all over the place, first she's a sweet girl, then she wants to kill those who hurt her family, then she joins a cult and now she's leaving. Her character is not going anywhere, her motivations are incredibly dull and pointless. I could say something similar about Jon Snow. He was the most devoted member of the Nightswatch, then he breaks an oath, then he leaves and now he's back. What's the point of that? Foreshadowing is in any show these days really, I don't see how Game Of Thrones succeeds in this. The Sopranos however topped it with the heat between Phil and Tony. Game Of Thrones had some good foreshadowing in season 2 and 3 in my opinion, but the rest fell flat. I also think The Sopranos had a much better connection between the plotlines, since it's all in New York and everyone has some relation between eachother. To be honest, I think Game Of Thrones stuffs way too many characters in it's plot. It's not really a great decision to have this many plotlines that are barely connected. The editing is getting messy aswel, what is the point of having an important scene, but then after that go to a completely different storyline to show us "guys, we're still here!". I'm quite wondering if you like Game Of Thrones for it's connecting stories and character development, how you didn't like The Sopranos? To which part did you watch The Sopranos?
+Mees other characters you haven't mention for character development: Tyrion, Davos, Sansa, Jamie, Dany, Bran, Robb, Theon Also detailed meaning the story. You have to pay so much attention to know where you are. Notice how Robb's rebellion against the Baratheons is still sort of screwing things up? It doesn't throw away key parts of the show like the Walking Dead does or other shows. The Sopranos also took its time developing Game of Thrones made audiences hooked just with the intro. Also the Sopranos doesn't have the three best villains in HBO history Tywin Joffery and Ramsey. My mom who watched all of the Sopranos when it first came out and was introduced Game of Thrones last year by me said Game of Thrones is much better. Plus Peter Dinklage is probably the best TV actor right now besides Bryan Cranston so that's another key thing
+Justin Jennings Dude... What's gonna be next, "Westworld is not on the list"? Check the date this video was uploaded and then check the day the first episode of True Detective aired. That will explain to you why True Detective is not on the list.
Daniel Navarro Half way through the entire series for the 10th time now. I've watched so many great series since, such as GoT and Breaking bad which are amazing, but nothing will compare to this series for me. Flawless
Make this list again in about 10 years and GoT will not be number one, they only made it number one because it is the most popular at the moment. Series like the Sopranos, The Wire, Oz and Six Feet Under are timeless. GoT still has a lot to prove.
It's an immense work of art. The last two episodes were immense. IMMENSE as in the two best episodes of the history of series. It has proven all it needs to. People trying to say something against it solely because it's also mainstream.
+Ryan Floch "The last two episodes were immense. IMMENSE as in the two best episodes of the history of series." OMG IKR, BEST THING EVER OMG I JUST CAME IN MY PANTS OVER IT!!111!111!!! GoT is overrated. People are saying it's the best show ever and it hasn't even ended yet. lmao. So Floris is right, GoT still has a lot to prove before it can be regarded as the best.
***** Your parody of overhyped kid is stupid. It's legitimate to be enthusiastic about the quality of directing and writing for these two episodes. I have no idea where you get the idea that a serie has to end in order to judge it and I suspect you took this from your ass. Good day !
Treme and Big Love were good too. Glad they put Oz on the list... that was really the series that started it all for big budget episodic tv on premium channels, and it seems like most people have forgotten about it.
1. Band of Brothers 2. The Wire 3. Sopranos 4. True Detective - will be no. 2 maybe even no.1 on my list if the next 2-3 seasons prove to be just as good as the first. 5. Game of Thrones - I might've ranked it higher if I didn't read to books.
D I Y O D it has a anthology-format, in wich each season features a different plot & cast. It will be tough for the next cast, to equal the performances Woody & McCoughlin put up in the first season though.
hmmmm not too sure how i feel about that, had come to terms with the fact it was over... thought it was perfect... will of course watch it if/when a new season arrives but i think it could be left alone... makes things more special that way...
Six feet Under should have been much higher on the list, but I like that it was not too mainstream. On a completely opposite note, Sex and the City deserved better too but for a totally different reason. Like come on, EVERYONE knows who "Carrie Bradshaw" is. And GOT is great and all but still overrated. The Sopranos is always credited for changing the landscape of TV so they deserved number one.
Personally, I reckon 'Rome' should've been on the list, and 'Deadwood' should've been higher up. Such a shame that the two shows were cancelled so soon... :-(
yea i LOVE me some breaking bad and would be in my top 3 i think! but where some people think titanics the best movie or some people think pulp fictions the best movie.. anyone like me loving them some lotr maybe crossed with some braveheart will be feeling me when i say GoT is the best and easily most epic tv series ever
The Sopranos is the best TV series of all time. It set the standard of television. It has the best developed story in history of television and it is so realistic which makes you connect to it. You feel the emotions the characters feel, you see the good and the bad in people, you see how events connect and how people react to them. REALISTIC means good and genuine and everyrthing. Game of thrones is not even in the same universe, it is just a comercial crap like harry potter which people tend to like. The Wire is ok, but it is not the same level as the sopranos and it has a less realistic story with less developed characters, also it was made after the Sopranos and lots of things were taken from the Sopranos!!! Sopranos just one of a kind!
+Marcelo Luiz Rizzi I do not understand i did not watched the wire but how i saw the wire did not won so many awards ass game of thrones or the sopranos it had mixed viewers and people says season 2 and 5 are disappointing so why everyone says is the best show ever?
MARRO1190 If you really understand the ending, take notice of all the hidden messages in it and the foreshadowing, the ending is a TRUE masterpiece.Best ending ever for me,at first I didn't understand it at all either, then after researching etc. I finally understood it.Though some people might say something completely different than me,that's fine, because the ending isn't really set, your opinion to the ending and what you believe happened,is the ending.
+Asmah Noordin Game of thrones is amazing. Just becuz u cant get into it doesnt mean it's not better. Also no. 3 is not a bad spot especially on the hbo list considering the top 6 or 7 are the best shows ever made
rps121 Cool your jets dude. It's had one season so far. You can't add a show with one season; you kind of have to give it some time to mature, see if it actually holds up.
T1) The Wire T1) The Sopranos T3) Six Feet Under 4) Curb Your Enthusiasm 5) Game of Thrones 6) Deadwood 7) Veep 8) Eastbound & Down 9) Oz 10) Life & Times of Tim
You lost credibility by putting Sopranos as 3. That should be either number 1 or 2, probably number 1. It is the most acclaimed HBO show for a reason, you know!
I'm peeved they put The Wire at number 2. I mean, Game of Thrones and Sexposition and Smashing Beetles Monologues and Rapesploitation is number 1? Really?? At least when The Sopranos featured rape and sex, there was a damn point to it. But noooo, we have to have Littlefinger going on a monologue about his history and motivations to two random whores fingering each other, becaaaaause "reasons."
+Javier V You can't judge a show after only a few seasons. The Sopranos was amazing throughout all 6 seasons, Game of Thrones lost most of its quality after season 4.
@bw 1506 the point of that was to prove that even if Melfi had the power to do something immoral, she would never do it because she's the most "normal" person in the sopranos
I’m on episode 3 of season 2 of the Wire and I think it’s brilliant. Meditative, thought provoking, authentic, and beautiful. The show is so fascinating and from what I’ve heard, it’s only going to get better.
My top 10: 1. Deadwood 2. Sopranos 3. Eastbound & Down 4. Game of Thrones 5. Boardwalk Empire 6.The Wire 7. Life and Times of Tim 8. Oz 9. Entourage 10. True Detective (but I've only seen Season 1)
I know curb your enthusiasm is a comedy, so it doesn't get as much respect as TV dramas. But it is one of the best written tv series of all time, when an episode comes full circle you will die of laughter. You'll probably find yourself quoting the show very often too
It's a fucking great show, I totally agree. To bad the world consists of a majority of idiots that rates the likes of Breaking Bad over The Wire and Sopranos.
I jsut watched the episode when Larry goes to Broadway to play as Max Bialystock and he fails go get his 10th anniversary present because that lady was a republican.I love that show!
1.The Sopranos- The best 2.Game of Thrones- soon to be #1 3.Oz- the original 4.Boardwalk Empire- 5.The Wire- didn't like seasons 4-5 6.Entourage- still want more 7.Curb Your Enthusiasm 8.True Detective- only been 1 season 9.Deadwood 10.In Treatment- solely for season 1
season 4 of the wire considered one of the very best seasons of television ever made by 99.99999999% of all homo sapiens. your taste sucks and/or is wrong.
As good as the show was and it was amazing, HBO themselves couldn't justify the rising costs of filming each episode compared to the ratings it was getting. I'm still pissed off about them cancelling the series when we had so many unresolved story lines and plots. In an interview on January 13, 2007, creator David Milch stated that he still intended to finish two films to wrap the series up. Sadly that ship has sailed and Deadwood is dead
I haven't seen Deadwood, but most shows I've watched deserves to be dropped after Season 2. Then the show starts introducing new characters and changing the ones who are still there, and suddenly it isn't the show it used to be. Then it becomes quantity over quality.
Nothing on this list is even comparable to The Wire. GOT is good, but The Wire is unlike any other show that has ever been. It should be number 1, and by a wide margin as well.
***** Some of us have reached the saturation point with "gritty, real-life drama". It's been done MANY times and many times it's been done well. This list illustrates that fact. What is much rarer is seeing science fiction or fantasy material done well and made for an adult audience. That's what makes GoT stand out among the others for me. Fantasy that doesn't cater to children or low-brow morons, but still with a phenomenal production quality. No reality drama is going to touch that.
10. True Blood 9. Sex and the City 8. Deadwood 7. Oz 6. Six Feet Under 5. Curb Your Enthusiasm 4. Boardwalk Empire 3. The Sopranos 2. The Wire 1. Game of Thrones
***** Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston give equal performances in BB but everyones just riding McConaugheys dick these days. Also Peter Dinklage could give the Mick a run for his money. It may have a stance in the real world, but no chance is it written better or smarter than BB or Thrones.
***** Lmao you fucking arrogant douche bag you're the one stating your opinion like its a worldwide fact so shut your pompous mouth I'm done with this stupid bickering we both have our opinions.
Game of Thrones is the most popular show in HBO history, it should be #1. And yeah, technically if you were to look at pure ratings on HBO, The Sopranos would have a tiny, tiny, incredibly tiny ratings edge that Game of Thrones is going to break this upcoming season, but it's also the most pirated show in the world. HBO has NEVER had a hit this big.
Rodrigo Coelho And it can't be. The books are a singular persons vision, they have room to fit ridiculously high amounts of exposition, details, characters, etc, that the television show just doesn't have time for. On top of that, every tv show is gonna have changes that change the story somewhat. Whether it's budgetary like not being able to do the chain scene in Blackwater, to changing what happens to a character like Xaro, to having to show where characters are that have gone missing in the books like Theon, because you can't have one of your highest profile characters disappearing for a few seasons, to the Greatjon not being at the Red Wedding because the actor left the show and it being too big a hassle to recast just for one scene when he won't do anything significant after, to an actor just being so good that you want to shoot more scenes for him because not doing so is a waste of his talent, to many other things. The nature of adapting 1000+ page books where every detail is carefully orchestrated and littered with backstory dating back thousands and thousands of years, no wasted motion, everything is there for a reason, etc, into 10 hour long episodes a season is going to produce some challenges that prove to have some negative effects. They said from the beginning that this show was going to be a massive undertaking, some thought it couldn't be done because of the scope. Hell, that's what George INTENDED when he thought the series up. Fans need to take into account how hard it is to create a series of this nature, where they're trying to walk a thin tightrope between pleasing hardcore fans and making the show as relatable as possible for first time viewers. And yes, David and Dan have made some decisions that probably weren't for the best to tell the best version of the story possible, but I don't think that they usually change things for the sake of it, it's because the tv audience will relate to a certain scene better if it's done this way, or budget, practical reasons, maybe something won't translate to the screen like it does on the page, like Vargo Hoat and his incomprehensible slobbering, etc. So taking everything into account, I think the show has performed about as well as anyone could reasonably ever ask for.
only problem with your reasoning is that they are clearly not basing it on ratings/popularity...if that were the case the wire would not be #2 (ratings-wise it was in the bottom half of their premier dramas) so, the list is clearly somewhat trying to judge QUALITY of the shows as well...while GoT is entertaining and certainly a high-quality program, sopranos, SFU, and Wire are incredibly well-written and just better shows overall all of this True Detective fanfare is due to it being new and relevant in everyone's minds...it's a good show, but there are stronger shows out there from HBO (and AMC)
I just finished watching Six Feet Under and it is honestly up there with the likes of The Wire.. HBO has some damn good programming. *Although Game of Thrones is a spectacular series, it isn't in the top 3 of great HBO shows but that's alright :)
Aaron Gothmann Just not season 5. I confess that. Season 5 sucked ass, and I say that as one who's only read the 2 last books, and read the wiki's of the previous... "Hardhome" episode was awesome though. That lived up to it...
Yeah season 5 was hard to watch. It was still alright but when you compare it to the rest of Game of Thrones it was complete trash. Just didn't feel authentic. Hopefully season 6 will be better.
Aaron Gothmann Worst thing for me is, that Jaime is my favorite character. Oberyn was my second favorite. I expected more of his daughters. And Bronn's my third favorite, lol! They wasted my favorites on trash. The boobies were the only good thing about the Sand Snakes. Alexander Siddig was awesome as Doran, but not so good that he could steal it all. But I think he was a good casting choice. Areo was always there to stop a bad scene. I loved that. He wasn't that bad either. Even Bronn's over the top singing couldn't save Dorne :( Go To Hell Sand Snakes! Oberyn's Rolling In His Grave Right Now!
+JustpressR And your point is? So this is where I'm supposed to feel bad because some faceless poindexter insults me from the safety of a computer? Sort of a pathetic waste of time don't you think? You have your opinion I have mine… the difference is I can express mine without becoming a condescending dick!!!
Brent Reid I make a complex point in a simple comment. Observing your favoritism in the show I point out your bias towards this show over others that may rank higher on average with everyone else.
I personally think the The Wire is the best show ever followed by Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. But for the purposes of this list, the top 3 are interchangeable.
Bending Unit No shit Sherlock. That's why I said, "But for the purposes if this list, the top 3 are interchangeable." Meaning, that the top 3 this list is talking about (Game of Thrones, The Wire and The Sopranos) they are interchangeable. Pay attention.
Oh Game of Thrones, of course Mojo! Why not?? After all, it's the most popular of these shows, partly because its one of few that are actually still in production. I dont know, guess I dont agree with that 1st place. At all.
asbrozek64 Agreed. I liked it more than most of the others, especially Boardwalk Empire. A few of those shows were mediocre at best, but at least they redeemed themselves with The Wire and GoT at the top. Well deserved.
Hugo Nabais Um, dude, a miniseries isn't characterized by how many episodes it has, it's characterized by whether or not its story is continuous or terminal. Rome was pitched as a self contained series with a set number of seasons which were all shot at once and released in two parts, whereas a full fledged series can potentially go on forever, or at least until the writers decide it's done.
The sopranos was groundbreaking ,not as the topic (the mafia) it was the way the story was told, satire ,intense scenes & a bit of humor in the mix .I paid extra for HBO just to see the sopranos & it was well worth it,Boardwalk Empire is done well also, but you must enjoy long scenes of dialog ,something that is missing in many movies & TV .

The writing on The Wire and The Sopranos is far superior to Game of Thrones.
Acting, too.

I think BE, Oz and Rome should be higher than GOT, And although TD is Brilliant it's still only had 1 season. I think I like to judge a TV series poll with atleast two seasons.
true detective is good.
*****
What's your top 10 bro ?
I definitely agree with you that the wire is#1
Agreeeed, but, I would put Sopranos in #1 and The Wire in #2, but, its just my opinion
Season 4 of The Wire is the best thing ever!
Season 4 of The Wire is the best season of any TV show ever..
Breaking bad season 5 is better tho
@@yousefghunaim8195 no breaking bad season comes even close to seasons 1-4 of the Wire 🤷🏾♂️
Jerry Alexander hell yea it does s4-5 bb is better than anything ever airing on tv
@@yousefghunaim8195 breaking bad is good but it's not even on the wires level.. The Wire was way more in depth and deeper than breaking bad
you come at the king you best not miss.....
Boardwalk Empire is seriously underrated.
+Daryl Dixon How original and simplistic lmao bro.
Woow..
That's because Game of Thrones have next to none flaws.
kaziabir1 watch season 7 again .
1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. True Detective
4. Game of Thrones
->rest
WillPG1212 Sopranos bettee
"The Wire" and "the sopranos" sucks!! Boardwalk empire is much better
Game of Thrones over The Sopranos and The Wire...with all due respect to Game of Thrones The Sopranos and The Wire are on the whole another level.
if you liked those try watching oz. i just watched it recently and in my opinion is in with level to those great, awesome shows you mentioned.
mhikesta Then Boardwalk Empire.
broadwalk empire number 1
unpopular opinion: Six Feet Under is my favorite HBO show and Oz is a close second.
Agreed!!!
The Wire and Six Feet Under are GOLD.
wire and sopranos are better than game of thrones
Since they are mixing in comedies, I would even put Curb above GoT.
Naaaaw man GoT is where its at
+Imtiaz Bhuiyan you mean GoBAM? (game of badly adapted material)
+landondonovanify So is Boardwalk empire
+landondonovanify Game of Thrones record breaking emmy's would disagree
We live in a world where people ACTUALLY think that Game of Thrones is better The Wire.
I know right. GOT is easily the most overrated show ever made, and the wire puts everything else to shame.
Ryan The Impaler have you seen True Detective? they say its the most on-par series with The Wire. Astonishing good
Or The Sopranos
Stef P or Oz.
I like Game Of Thrones a lot but damn, it doesn't come close to The Sopranos.
Yeah. Yeah it does
Joe Caputo No it doesn't.
#1: The Wire
But just starting this video i am sure it won't be there number 1... But it is no doubt one of the best shows ever made!!
thetizzle you right.
I'm not hating on GOT, but The Wire definitely deserves the #1 spot.
Sopranos definitely deserves the #1 spot.
THE WIRE IS NUMBER TWO?!?!?!?!?! THIS WHOLE PAGE LOST ALL CRED.
are you annoyed because it's not number one ?
they lost a bit of cred when they disqualified Band of Brothers
+Robert Ward couldn't agree more Robert!!
True Detective isn't even on the list. WTF.
+Justin Jennings Dude... What's gonna be next, "Westworld is not on the list"? Check the date this video was uploaded and then check the day the first episode of True Detective aired. That will explain to you why True Detective is not on the list.
1) The Sopranos
2) The Sopranos
3) The Sopranos
what
bronsoninnit give evidences.... Report....News...
Don't speak nonsense... Crawl back under the rock you came from that
Daniel Navarro and Wire
@bronsoninnit Hahahahaha
Daniel Navarro
Half way through the entire series for the 10th time now. I've watched so many great series since, such as GoT and Breaking bad which are amazing, but nothing will compare to this series for me. Flawless
"The Sopranos" is the best thing i have ever seen on TV.
Nah
Facts
Make this list again in about 10 years and GoT will not be number one, they only made it number one because it is the most popular at the moment. Series like the Sopranos, The Wire, Oz and Six Feet Under are timeless. GoT still has a lot to prove.
It's an immense work of art. The last two episodes were immense. IMMENSE as in the two best episodes of the history of series.
It has proven all it needs to. People trying to say something against it solely because it's also mainstream.
+Ryan Floch
"The last two episodes were immense. IMMENSE as in the two best episodes of the history of series."
OMG IKR, BEST THING EVER OMG I JUST CAME IN MY PANTS OVER IT!!111!111!!!
GoT is overrated. People are saying it's the best show ever and it hasn't even ended yet. lmao. So Floris is right, GoT still has a lot to prove before it can be regarded as the best.
*****
Your parody of overhyped kid is stupid. It's legitimate to be enthusiastic about the quality of directing and writing for these two episodes.
I have no idea where you get the idea that a serie has to end in order to judge it and I suspect you took this from your ass.
Good day !
Especially today after we've seen the last season of GOT
@@ryanfloch6054 Your comment didn't age well.
The Sopranos should be number one...
Without The Sopranos most of these shows wouldn't exist! SOPRANOS FOREVER!
dylanissanta Sopranos started all of this shit.
The Wire would think otherwise.
Deadwood is so underrated. Honesty its easily in my top 3 tv shows of all time.
It’s my favorite
some honorable mentions:
-the newsroom
-veep
-entourage
-true detective
-mr. show
-rome
Treme and Big Love were good too.
Glad they put Oz on the list... that was really the series that started it all for big budget episodic tv on premium channels, and it seems like most people have forgotten about it.
musyarofah1 BAND OF BROTHERS
musyarofah1 Honorable mention? True Detective deserve one of the first places.
justhateme israel Whatch the whole video before commenting. They said mini series don't count at the begining of the video.
TheBenjamixx True Detective debuted in 2014 and this video was made in 2013 so...
Oz was great,it should be in top 3
Exactly
Carnivale was definitely my favorite! It's a damn shame they only made 2 seasons of it. Really surprised it wasn't on this list!!
Okay GoT is good but this list is horrible.
1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
( These can go back and forth I honestly can't decide)
3. GoT
1. Band of Brothers
2. The Wire
3. Sopranos
4. True Detective - will be no. 2 maybe even no.1 on my list if the next 2-3 seasons prove to be just as good as the first.
5. Game of Thrones - I might've ranked it higher if I didn't read to books.
This is the first list I see that makes sense to me...
true detective is just the one season as far as i know..
Chineserijstwafel
Six feet Under should have been much higher on the list, but I like that it was not too mainstream. On a completely opposite note, Sex and the City deserved better too but for a totally different reason. Like come on, EVERYONE knows who "Carrie Bradshaw" is. And GOT is great and all but still overrated. The Sopranos is always credited for changing the landscape of TV so they deserved number one.
i fucking love Game of Thrones to death, but I really don't think HBO will ever broadcast anything quite as good as The Wire
1) The Wire
2) The Sopranos
3) Deadwood (shocking it's at #8)
4) Game of Thrones
5) Six Feet Under
Are you black?
Im hardcore fan of game of thrones, but cmon wire or sopranos should be on #1
Same here
GoT doesn't even come close to The Wire.
Thats was my top 3, Game of thrones, the wire and the sopranos first!
Game of thrones is the greatest show ever www.imdb.com/search/title?num_votes=5000,&sort=user_rating,desc&title_type=tv_series
Caleb Clarkin implying that imdb ratings prove anything besides blatant fanboyism
Personally, I reckon 'Rome' should've been on the list, and 'Deadwood' should've been higher up.
Such a shame that the two shows were cancelled so soon...
:-(
GAME OF THRONES! not just for HBO but is simply the best!
bahaha its probably the most graphic show on tv! yea noddy 4 kids..
*****
or maybe its the rape in the show that hes talking about? all kids shows should have a little rape in there
May I object? Sherlock, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, House. One does not simply claim the BEST tv show with so much epic titles around.
yea i LOVE me some breaking bad and would be in my top 3 i think! but where some people think titanics the best movie or some people think pulp fictions the best movie.. anyone like me loving them some lotr maybe crossed with some braveheart will be feeling me when i say GoT is the best and easily most epic tv series ever
Game of thrones, Sherlock, breaking bad and the walking dead are the best shows I have seen (I have yet to watch the wire, sopranos exc exc)
Sopranos should have been number 1
Sopranos just one of a kind!
i agree with u
Yeah if you like programs about gangsters. If not, it was pretty bad.
I agreed with everything you said until you said the wire was ok...you do know the wire is used to each inner city life at universitys such as brown
"Best tv series of all time"

2) Soprano/ Breaking Bad /Games of Thrones
im sorry bro but SOPRANOS IS NOT THE BEST OR TOP 5.. HAVE U SEEN SEASON 4 RATINGS??? HAHA THE WIRE KILLS DAT SHOW..
1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. Six Feet Under

5. OZ
6. Boardwalk Empire
+Marcelo Luiz Rizzi I do not understand i did not watched the wire but how i saw the wire did not won so many awards ass game of thrones or the sopranos it had mixed viewers and people says season 2 and 5 are disappointing so why everyone says is the best show ever?
Apart from GoT thats what my list looks like
Re-do this once True Detective finishes. Best tv show in years.
***** It's an Anthology series so there will be more.

Supernatural lovecraftian horror roots? Seriously? What supernatural Lovecraftian horror roots are you referring to?
***** The first season of TD was set in Louisiana so its roots delve more into voodoo and druidism than Lovecraftian horror
1.The Wire
2.The Sopranos
3.Deadwood/Rome (if only they weren't cancelled)
4.Chernobyl
5.Six Feet Under
GAME OF THRONES
Was this video posted on April Fools Day or somethin? Sopranos No.3????? How many amounts of weed did you smoke Watchmojo???
MARRO1190 If you really understand the ending, take notice of all the hidden messages in it and the foreshadowing, the ending is a TRUE masterpiece.Best ending ever for me,at first I didn't understand it at all either, then after researching etc. I finally understood it.Though some people might say something completely different than me,that's fine, because the ending isn't really set, your opinion to the ending and what you believe happened,is the ending.
MARRO1190 :=)
"You can't retire from the mafia"
That was basically the message of the show.
And that it destroys your family and your human-side.
+Asmah Noordin Game of thrones is amazing. Just becuz u cant get into it doesnt mean it's not better. Also no. 3 is not a bad spot especially on the hbo list considering the top 6 or 7 are the best shows ever made

1- The wire
2- The sopranos
3- Got
Team Oz ftw
Oz is HBOs Citizen Kane, in a way.
kind of. It did establish that HBO was not gonna pull any punches.
True Detective beats all, period. The only other show that comes close on HBO is The Sopranos.
***** Wut why not?
Possible Theory because its an anthology series, meaning it has a different cast and story each season...
the wire is way better than them both
The Wire is not better than True Detective, its a great show, but come on, its really overrated, at a point, it just became another cop procedural.
The Wire is golden
You guys should add True Detective on this list! That first season was amazing!
Take a look at the date that this vdo got published @rps121. True Detective did not premiere back then
Azan Zaman I know, that's why I'm saying they should now add it to the list.
rps121 Cool your jets dude. It's had one season so far. You can't add a show with one season; you kind of have to give it some time to mature, see if it actually holds up.
trolltacular1 I know man but I hope they build on the excellence of the first season.
oH !

deadwood and leftover to
Oz!!!!!!!!!!!!
#2 The Wire? Are you serious? It's by far the biggest show ever.
Six Feet Under will always be 1# in my heart it had the BEST ENDING EVER
Only gays/gals like Six Feet Under. The wire is the best man.
Deadwood should be higher.
Deadwood would be number 3 for me, behind The Sopranos and The Wire.
You lost credibility by putting Sopranos as 3. That should be either number 1 or 2, probably number 1. It is the most acclaimed HBO show for a reason, you know!
It used to be the most popular until
Game of Thrones beat them 2 years ago.
@Ben W if you can’t see the purpose of the Melfi getting raped episode I don’t know what to tell you, you shouldn’t critique film then.
I’m on episode 3 of season 2 of the Wire and I think it’s brilliant. Meditative, thought provoking, authentic, and beautiful. The show is so fascinating and from what I’ve heard, it’s only going to get better.
Hey, I am on the same season and episode, I hope you enjoyed the rest of the show

3. Eastbound & Down
4. Game of Thrones
5. Boardwalk Empire
6.The Wire
7. Life and Times of Tim
8. Oz
9. Entourage
10. True Detective (but I've only seen Season 1)
You should make a 2nd list:
-Bored To Death
-Animals.
-True Detective
-Eastbound & Down
Etc.
I haven’t seen True Detective but I LOVE all the other shows you mentioned
True Detective - New Number 1 !!!
I'd say it's #2 behind GoT. Definitely the best new show.
True Blood over Rome and Carnivale? This is why you can't have nice things, WatchMojo.
Six feet under at 6???!!!! Da hell!!!
Ikr, just watched the series finaly and i had a hard time keeping my tears in.
I think it should probably cut the top 5. Such a haunting and wonderful show.
1.The Sopranos- The best
2.Game of Thrones- soon to be #1
3.Oz- the original
4.Boardwalk Empire-
5.The Wire- didn't like seasons 4-5
6.Entourage- still want more
7.Curb Your Enthusiasm
8.True Detective- only been 1 season
9.Deadwood
10.In Treatment- solely for season 1
season 4 of the wire considered one of the very best seasons of television ever made by 99.99999999% of all homo sapiens. your taste sucks and/or is wrong.
#1 Sopranos #2 Six Feet Under #3 Game of Thrones ... and replace Sex in the City with Entourage.
I really hate HBO for leaving deadwood for dead after only three seasons.
Ian Cunningham agree 100% The Wire is a masterpiece
Ian Cunningham The Sopranos is number 1. The wire is a close second.
Deadwood
The Wire should be number one IMO.
You people need to stop with GOT being #1. The Series should be #3 until it's over when you compare to The Wire and Sopranos. It's just insulting.
And Six Feet Under :)
*****
Some of us have reached the saturation point with "gritty, real-life drama".
10. True Blood
9. Sex and the City
8. Deadwood
7. Oz
6. Six Feet Under
5. Curb Your Enthusiasm
4. Boardwalk Empire
3. The Sopranos

thanks...i just want to see the list...not watch a 10 minute video

i honestly thought oz would be higher
They should have waited until True Detective came out before making this list.
That shows a bit over rated but I guess it would still be on this list, Replace True Blood and Rome with True Detective and Band of Brothers.
And i hope the leftovers will be as good as these shows too.
***** It was very good don't get me wrong but Game of Thrones and BB deserve all the praise they get.
***** Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston give equal performances in BB but everyones just riding McConaugheys dick these days. Also Peter Dinklage could give the Mick a run for his money. It may have a stance in the real world, but no chance is it written better or smarter than BB or Thrones.

HBO has NEVER had a hit this big.
why are you putting this it was #1 mean its obvious in the video so why?
Jackson Ledford I was defending why it was #1, not that it wasn't #1 and should've been.
But it's still nothing compared to the books.
So taking everything into account, I think the show has performed about as well as anyone could reasonably ever ask for.
only problem with your reasoning is that they are clearly not basing it on ratings/popularity...if that were the case the wire would not be #2 (ratings-wise it was in the bottom half of their premier dramas)
so, the list is clearly somewhat trying to judge QUALITY of the shows as well...while GoT is entertaining and certainly a high-quality program, sopranos, SFU, and Wire are incredibly well-written and just better shows overall
all of this True Detective fanfare is due to it being new and relevant in everyone's minds...it's a good show, but there are stronger shows out there from HBO (and AMC)
The Wire is the best all over, period.
The Sopranos is better
I just finished watching Six Feet Under and it is honestly up there with the likes of The Wire.. HBO has some damn good programming. *Although Game of Thrones is a spectacular series, it isn't in the top 3 of great HBO shows but that's alright :)
The Sopranos,The Wire, OZ and Game of Thrones are all great masterpieces difficult to choose one alone.
I think you could put Game of Thrones in the last spot.
Homicide
Wasnt it obvius that they put GoT on the first place to please all the fanboys?
I am a Game of Thrones fan and I choose it above all shows. But even I thought they'll either put Sopranos or The Wire on #1. I am quite surprised...
Linus Linuthorax The Wire and The Sopranos are still better but GOT is definitely not overrated. Totally lives up to the hype.
Even Bronn's over the top singing couldn't save Dorne :(
Go To Hell Sand Snakes! Oberyn's Rolling In His Grave Right Now!
oz should be in top 3
Watch Mojo should do a "Top 10 AMC Shows" List
we all know that list
Breakin bad no.1 the walking dead no.2 then mad men no.3 and hell on wheels or something...
My top 3 will always be Sopranos, Wire, Oz. Wire probably the best overall show. Character development Sopranos and Oz is top notch.
10. Curb Your Enthusiasm
9. Entourage
8. OZ
7. Rome
6. Deadwood
5. True Detective
4. Boardwalk Empire
3. The Wire
2. Game of Thrones
1. The Sopranos
Bored to Death is quite good as well
Have you seen Six Feet Under?
close, but the Wire is the best show ever
+Brent Reid says the fanboy
+JustpressR And your point is? So this is where I'm supposed to feel bad because some faceless poindexter insults me from the safety of a computer? Sort of a pathetic waste of time don't you think? You have your opinion I have mine… the difference is I can express mine without becoming a condescending dick!!!
Brent Reid Try to do it in an intelligent matter next time then.
+JustpressR lead by example!
Brent Reid I make a complex point in a simple comment. Observing your favoritism in the show I point out your bias towards this show over others that may rank higher on average with everyone else.
The Sopranos should of been number 1.
Agreed, but now True Dective may be 1.
Caitlin McQuade We'll see after 6 seasons.
I personally think the The Wire is the best show ever followed by Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. But for the purposes of this list, the top 3 are interchangeable.
Werner Gomez Breaking Bad isnt an HBO show
Bending Unit No shit Sherlock. That's why I said, "But for the purposes if this list, the top 3 are interchangeable." Meaning, that the top 3 this list is talking about (Game of Thrones, The Wire and The Sopranos) they are interchangeable. Pay attention.
How you gonna put GoT above The Wire, The Sopranos, Oz & Curb your Enthusiasm.
What a crock.
Oh Game of Thrones, of course Mojo! Why not?? After all, it's the most popular of these shows, partly because its one of few that are actually still in production.
I dont know, guess I dont agree with that 1st place. At all.
i havent watched video yet but if its game of thrones i agree with it being on 1
Absolutely feels like it gets worse as the series progresses.
tsUki And you watched how many shows of the list. None!
Fishman Fairclough how season 3 was fucking amazing derp
Rome was amazing.
commandoslayer Seriously. The real crime here is that Rome isn't even on the list!
asbrozek64 Agreed. I liked it more than most of the others, especially Boardwalk Empire. A few of those shows were mediocre at best, but at least they redeemed themselves with The Wire and GoT at the top. Well deserved.
commandoslayer rome was a mini series...
Haleem AH No. It was a (great) TV series with 2 seasons. 22 total episodes.
Mini series don't have 22 episodes!
The sopranos was groundbreaking ,not as the topic (the mafia) it was the way the story was told, satire ,intense scenes & a bit of humor in the mix .I paid extra for HBO just to see the sopranos & it was well worth it,Boardwalk Empire is done well also, but you must enjoy long scenes of dialog ,something that is missing in many movies & TV .
guess they have to add true detective now
no, its a miniseries
it's a show with 2 seasons
And its second season ruins its credibility.
Second season still better than every GoT season
leonardo azzari That statement is just unfounded aha. Every show on this list is better than TD season 2.
