You didn't show it, but I LOVED Simon Z's conversation with his former zealot comrades. In the opening scene, we see him sharpening a new dagger, in anticipation of that confrontation. But when that time comes, instead of a badass "Jesus Warrior" fight scene, he meekly drops to his knees and begins praying, trusting that his humble submission to Jesus' teachings will change their hearts.
He couldn't know if it would work, but it didn't matter; he had faith, and he acted on it.

The scene between Tamar and Zeb happened right after Mary had said that she thought she was being rude to Zeb. My take was she didn't criticize the joke or answer him because she did not want to appear to be rude to him. She was trying to take Mary's advice.

The writing is doing such a fantastic job with the “tension of expectation” regarding the Messiah, what they expected vs what they received and their responses.
I started thinking last night, that Judas probably didn’t start out as a betrayer, he was a faithful follower, but his expectation lead him to betray Jesus.
After ep 7, it is quite clear Gaius is the Roman in Scripture,
And I think Atticus will be at the cross, but I am wondering if he will be there as a follower, he has been following Jesus for awhile, always in the distance. Watching.

Why does Nathan care if SImon is sharpening a dagger or a kitchen knife? They both will do the same thing. A pencil is just a pencil until it's exhibit "A". Is it because that the "dagger" is specifically a weapon? Because a dagger can also be used as a kitchen knife.

I think the teaching is if you put new wine into Old wineskins the wineskins burst and you lose both the wine and the wineskin. If you put new wine into new wineskins and both are preserved it means you keep both the wine and the wineskin. I don't think it means you keep both wineskins. I don't know. That's what I was taught.

I have always felt that since his wife had been receiving visions about Jesus, and had most likely been receiving visions while she was with Pilate, he tended to take them seriously. He also may have believed in them, because had he not, she would have stopped sharing them with him in the way she did, by saying she had a vision, and not by saying that she thought this or that about situations they faced.
Therefore, I believe Pilot paid attention to what was going on in the area he was in charge of during the Passover Season.
After speaking with Jesus, I think he was actually believing that this 'man' he was speaking with and listening to, was indeed 'special'.
I also believe that between what his wife had said, hearing what was going on in the Community, and how he felt, with 'what' he was 'feeling', he may even began to understand certain things.
We must remember that Pilate was aware of Jewish Traditions, as he was sent by Herod due to his ability to understand what happens during this time when thousands of people came for the Passover Celebrations from allover the entire area in order to be at The Temple as per their belief and practices taught for hundreds of years.
I think that a few things that Pilate said and did, considering his penchant for having had his military destroy groups of peoples that he simply 'felt' like doing. He was a murderous Governor who enjoyed and even overstepped his duties as Governor.
Since he even deigned to listen to Jesus out of curiosity shows his curiosity overshadowed his 'natural' behaviour, and he even felt he wanted no part in the judgement of this "man" in front of him.
Why Herod sent Jesus back to Herod and making Pilate make the final decision was also due to his own feelings about Pilate simply not doing what he was supposed to. ie: Keeping the peace between the Parisees and Romans, especially during Passover. (Remember, much money was given to The Pharisees for 'order' amongst Jews)
When trying to trade Barabas in Jesus place, and the Jews calling for Barabas' release and Pilate washed his hands of this, he was certainly making a statement considering he never seemed to have had problems ordering executions before this.
I also believe that Pilates having the engraving was not a sarcastic 'accusation', but perhaps his own way of proclamation due to his part in the pain Jesus suffered at his hand by his order of the 40 lashes, as I believe he called for that, thinking that should be sufficient in appeasing The Pharisees, or at the very least, telling them that he was boss still, and had no intention of killing this Jesus who in his mind had no fault in him.
The 'proclamation' on the carved sign, saying in differing languages that Jesus was King of The Jews, was to be a reminder to 'all' who had 'obeyed' (had 'heard) The Law that they followed by their belief in their GOD.
That by turning Jesus over to him, to be killed for blasphemy, because part of 'The Law' was, "Thou shalt not kill", did NOT clear them of murder, and that 'they' should remember what was done by them.
After ruminating, and looking at the History of Pilate (who btw had his position taken away at the same time Caiaphas (sp.), the Head of The Pharisees who demanded Jesus' death from Pilate), I have thought that Pilate had remembered his wife's vision not to take part in this, and why... And tried, Then perhaps gave a 'Testimony', and shoved it in the faces of the Jews who he felt were responsible.
    Just a thought.

Definitely Atticus at the cross with recognition of Jesus.. He's shown deep interest regarding Jesus, who is he? think were his words. Whether talking to Gaius, Simon Z, or Quintus, revealing his . He's heard the Sermon on the Mount, seen a possessed man be healed by Jesus, a zealot give up his prized Zealot dagger, etc. Your commentary seemed to suggest Atticus didn't have understanding of the Sermon on the Mount, when he and Gaius we're asked by Quintus regarding the sermon content. My thought was Atticus chose not to report any of the content purposely. Not that he understood everything but he is following this man and group, partly because of orders but more likely he wants to know more about Jesus. When I rewatched those scenes with the above three characters, very revealing. He also commented with Pilate that his position also could be a "demotion" type of assignment. Think he is searching for more beyond his Roman elite position.

I would like to add that a man who ate locusts, probably also was living in a jail without much food. That can lead to hallucinations, and other things he may not say if he wasn't incarcerated. Being alone isn't how God created people to be, and John was feeling lonely.

I have heard a nice explanation of the answer Jesus gave to Johns disciples (by a catholic friar from the congregation of st. Dominic here in Poland): Jesus listed all the wonders from the profecy except "liberty to the captives" to indicate that John will not leave prison. Jesus needed John to stay there and to die first (before Jesus dies) to pave the way for Messiah in the depth of Sheol as well.

He wanted the Jewish community to accept him in his Jewishness and he wanted the gentile communities for their newer ways of looking at his teachings. He wants to preserve the covenant and bring about the new kingdom. Thanks for giving me new insight

I wonder if John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus the question because THEY were anxious about the identity of the Messiah. So John says to his disciples "Go and ask Him yourselves" ... so that THEY will be convinced. Possibly?

Matthew and Luke use the word centurion at the cross. Does this title encompass Atticus’s position in the Roman hierarchy? I agree that Gaius is softening but he is listening to the message but not necessarily fully understanding what he is witnessing. Even the disciples don’t fully understand. I believe the centurion at the cross is Gaius. Long shot Quintus.

If Atticus does turn out to be the "surely this Man...." Roman at the crucifixion, that'll be a change from other versions. In Zefferelli's both that role and the soldier with the sick servant were combined in one. (Ernst Borgnine.) So Gaius and Atticus were one. But heck, I've lost the ability to predict or guess anything now. With Shmuel apparently turning into a proto-Christian in the last episode, anything is possible.

The popular teaching in the Jewish culture was there will be 2 Messiah's. Messiah Ben Yoseph, the suffering Messiah and Messiah Ben David the Kingly Messiah. John wanted to know which one Yeshua was... Are You coming as David and overthrowing this government or will there be another? He believed he just wasn't sure which one Yeshua was. I believe Yeshua's answer let him know He came that time as Messiah Ben Yoseph.

In the Spanish bible, John I:1 readstN el principio era el Verbo, y el Verbo era con Dios, y el Verbo era Dios." Please note that "the Word" is "el Verbo". Do you remember your grammar? The verb is the "action word." "El Verbo" is the Action Word. "Wisdom is justified by her children" as Jesus said in Matt 11:19.

I seems clear that Gaius has a history and future in this story. He is the father of the slave's kid, his son's friend. Question is how did she die? Atticus makes a comment to Gaius about murder (from the knower of all things). Probably Giaus has something to do with the boy losing his mother (blackmail). and, eventually Jesus will heal his son, which ever one is sick.
