My blowdryer is a Conair InfinitiPro compact model. I've had it since before I started wearing my hair wavy, and when I went hunting for a diffuser (because it didn't come with one either) I learned that it is one of a VERY few dryers on the market that fits the Xtava Black Orchid with no adapter needed. It has high/low/cool heat settings and a cold shot, and high/low air speed as well, and the cool setting is genuinely cool. It says it's ionic. I paid $17 for it however many years ago; right now it's $21 on Amazon. My hair is pretty low porosity; I go to about 80-90% dry in 15 minutes and call it good, usually. Fun fact: not only does the diffuser double the cost of this blowdryer setup, it also doubles the weight, the space it takes up in a suitcase, and the overall length. But for a similar cost or maybe even a bit less, I get an awesome giant diffuser instead of the small ones that are usually bundled in with blowdryers. I don't feel like the more expensive diffuser ruined the experiment - I think it shows that diffuser quality probably matters more than blow dryer quality, which is really helpful if you're on a limited budget!
Talking with your hands is who you are, just keep being yourself. Also, I thought this video was very helpful even though it was only a one time test. It almost seems like the trick is to buy the right diffuser.😂
I got my mom's old small Remington hairdryer that isn't sold anymore, I got a diffuser for it and use it on medium heat low speed. It's loud but lightweight and good at drying my hair fast without frizz (I stop at 80-90% dry as letting it airdry at the end gives me less frizz than if I diffuse or airdry 100%). The hairdryer is a bit under 10 years old, my mom's previous hairdryer lasted her around 15 years, so it might be quite a while until I need a new one. But it's good to know investing in an expensive one might not be for me as a small lightweight hairdryer is more useful to me than a heavier pricier one with more functions.
I have a conair infinity pro dryer. I think I paid about $20 so not the most basic dryer, but it's similar, only two heat/speed settings, but it has a cool shot. I did upgrade to a Segbeauty diffuser over the small flat diffuser my conair came with, but it works well for me right now.
I'd be interested in finding out if the Xtava Black Orchid diffuser is a game changer or not vs. whatever cheap diffusers come with the hair dryers many of us already have. I feel like that's the part that matters even more, but of course, I'm on the fence about investing in another diffuser if it won't make a difference. For the record, I'm using a $20 Remington D3190A Damage Control Ceramic hair dryer that I bought in 2016. I also learned about my own hair's pH damage so I'm being less involved with my waves while they grow out, which is a bummer, but I'm glad the journey helped me learn about my damage.
Have you measured the temperature WITH the diffuser you used? Because that's the actual test of the two dryers since your diffuser and the the connector. Especially since you noted there was a temperature change using your diffuser. Thanks!
Hey Courtney, I think you're absolutely right. For someone at home only using a hairdryer a few times a week using a more affordable hairdryer with a diffuser attachment and heat protection (a must I think!) is such a good option. And I think diffuser attachments are available at a much cheaper price that can be used instead (you've not screwed up 😊❤). Always love your videos x
I'd be curious how it compares to $20-40 hair dryers that usually have multiple heat and speed settings (my Revlon has 3 heat settings and 2 speed settings, plus a cool shot button).
Your hair is so beautiful! Healthy hair like that is my goal. I’m also an SWavy, 2a-c. I know you’re a busy mom, but I do miss your beautiful long hair. Besides hair health, I want to grow mine as long as I can. I have pretty painful fibromyalgia and inflammatory arthritis, so I don’t have the stamina to fight with my hair for the short styles I wore when I was still working, so I’m enjoying transitioning into being a curly girl. I’m using the methods I’ve learned from you, and even though I have to use up my El Vive grow long products, I’ll replace them with Curly Girl approved products as I use them up. But my goal is the beautiful shiny heathy hair that you’ve achieved. Thanks for all your videos and support!❤
Please let us know what your current favourite is! I always wanted a Dyson but then watched your Shark vs Dyson test and purchased a Shark....I love it!
@@christiemese it’s not expensive; it’s just a 1/4 of a dyson. I have both laifen and dyson but in long term (I have always bleached + colored hair) I can safely say laifen is just garbage, dyson really keeps my hair really healthy and shiny. Laifen on the other hand while it does get the job done and looks the same when it’s done; rather disappointed for long term use, thus now I only use the laifen for my dog.
your hair is so cute short. My hair is the longest its been in some time and although I love the long wavy curly mane- short and sassy is mightly appealing right now
Maybe it's just me but the pitch of the Dyson hurt my ears! I have a Conair InfinitiPro, which I think was like $30? It came with a diffuser. It has three temp settings: hot, warm and cool, plus a cold shot button. It has two speeds, low and high. Back when I was drying it straight, I did hot and high heat :P Now I do the cool to warm on low. It takes me like a half hour to dry it though...
Well I definitely need my hands for talking so I can think of words if they don’t instantly pop in my head. And once again I think this short hair really suits you very well. ❤
I have medium thick wavy hair. And i have the deva curl hair dryer with the hand diffuser, i never really worked for me and I didn't use it as often. The husband got it for me as a gift years ago. This year he bought me a dyson! With only 10 minutes or so, my hair dries enough for me to sleep on. No more wet hair sleeping days. I could never get those results with the other hair dryer. So in my case, my dyson is worth it.
I love your scientific experiments. Your videos are a good length and provide useful information. Have you ever tried the deva diffuser that looks like a hand? It works differently and has cut my diffusing time down to about 3-5 minutes.
@Tesria The air comes out on the top and the bottom. I use the hand shape diffuser to lift the hair slightly off my scalp. This means the root hair dries quickly away from my scalp. I have never really used a hair dryer so I do find it a bit awkward.
Are you still loving the Laifen? I love mine! Also, when was the last time you updated your Amazon shop, didn’t see the Laifen on there so it made me curious
Ok, I had to stop the video to buy that snozzel pro! Thanks!!! I love my dyson, but not a big fan of the diffuser, and I was sad I couldn't use the orchid with it.
I've had my 20euro dryer for several years now, it came with a diffuser amongst other things, and has two speed and three temperature settings as well as a cold one (that I never use). I play around with the settings all the time because I'm never 100% happy with the outcome. Thanks to you I'm now wondering if I need a different diffuser attachment to solve all/some of my problems. A video on the effects of different ones would be super helpful.
Your hair is looking great❤. I also find that the temp is cooler when using the Orchid diffuser & Dyson. love that I can crank up the heat little more😊
Would love you to test different brands of heat protection products, as well as if it should be a spray or gel and also when it's best applied in the curly/wavy washday routine. Thanks!
When I started the curly girl method 3 years ago I got sucked into thinking that I needed an expensive hairdryer. I bought a Parlux which was about £120. Honestly, I never liked it for diffusing as it blows my curls all over the place. I went straight back to my £20 cheap hairdryer and much prefer it. It is not as powerful and I can control it better. The Parlux does an amazing straight blow dry.
I bought a Shark hairdryer...less expensive than the Dyson. Slight edge in dry time per 1 curly hair influencer I follow. I expected it to decrease my dry time but csn't claim much difference. I like the diffuser, several settings for heat and speed but it runs hot and loud..very loud. Heavy and not a balanced feel but I am used to it now. I'll keep it but not 100% if I would buy it again.
Have you ever thought of helping others with their journey? I have Multiple Sclerosis and I could really use some help. I really enjoyed you videos and from one hand talker to another, you do you.
Honestly that has convinced me to invest in a Dyson for several reasons. 1) I'm a scientist and I love a good experiment. 2) I'm new to wavy hair and with my eti hair dryer it takes me 20 minutes which bores me senseless 😂 as I dry. 3) Sometimes 2 minutes can make a difference. 4) More variable settings makes me very attracted to it. Trust me, that experiment WAS worth it!!
I've been seeing a hair diffuser that really intrigues me! It's called the Diffon Bellissima. It's all one piece, light weight and has good reviews. I wondered if you've seen it, and would you be interested in testing it out? Love all your videos!
I have asked her to review this too a while back. I ended up getting one and honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever use anything else again. I was using the Xtava and the Black Orchid diffuser. The Bellissima Diffon is so lightweight and I only ever use my hair dryer to diffuse my hair so it’s all I really need. It is so amazing. I’d recommend it to anyone with wavy or curly hair. I have the basic model. They came out with a fancier one if you want those extra settings.
Your hair is looking very curly in this video❤. I have a Dyson and I love it but it still takes me 30 minutes to diffuse my hair, which is the same as my old dryer. However everything about it is so nice. It takes me so long because I dry that last 10% as I get the most shrinkage as my hair is wavy and I like it to look curly.
So the most expensive hair dryer it will always be better. Obviously but the question is Is it worth it? Does the 500$ justify its value vs a philips 50$ one? And so as long as you not use it for a barber shop professionally. I don’t see why would you spend that much money for only using it a few times a week. But maybe I’m wrong
Such a fun experiment, Courtney. My biggest frustration is drying time with my wavy, curly hair. I'm really straddling the fence on just going back to blow drying my hair straight. It really takes less time to do it. I have a Sharp hair dryer I invested in, and I do like the adjustable diffuser. Any suggestions for speeding up drying time?
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney Yes, I've done both regular plopping and micro plopping. I even recently cut off 3 inches to see if that would help with both dry time and curl. Not that much difference. Thanks for your input.

Adding in the cost, $35 and $505 are still vastly different for that amount of practical difference, and you had to control for that variable somehow...though I am curious about using just what they came with. A whole 'nother experiment to do! Maybe just re-wet and restyle after the no-diffuser part lol.
