Redkite, these are fantastic videos! One thing you might want to add is that to get the FLIR to work on the HUD you must also turn on the FLIR switch in the Miscellaneous Control Panel right above the INS switch.
That's also true of the DMT. If you're using an air start they'l already be on, Usually i'l switch them on as part of my startup routine, but it's worth a mention for those who forget :)
Many thanks for your videos. You really do a great job. You always explain the WHY and HOW TO which make things clear. Thank you. I just can say....please continue in this way.
I really like your tutorials. Not to long and to the point. Thank you. When I saw your latest A10 video where you went through The Valley the AV8b would have been the better option. With the NAVFLIR it can actually see through fog and clouds. I really like the Harrier it can’t carry as much as the A10 but it is faster and the night attack version is in a great advantage when it comes to navigation.
Harrier would of been a good option, but this was before the release of the harrier :) I'm not sure you should be able to see through fog with the Navflir though, since fog is generally pretty wet and cold. The TGP boresighted can also see through the fog, though it's just such heavy zoom and locked to an mfd on the A-10c it's not really that useful for navigation.
Sensor select aft doesn't alternate between LSS and TV mode. Once in TV I can't cycle back to LSS. Is there a way to do this. I'm on 2.5.5 stable, possibly something changed? The LSS in the Tpod has a poor jittery search pattern, I prefer the DMT but can't reselect LSS on DMT?
harrier module is almost completely broken now with the new 2.5.1 update. mavericks dont work cuz the IRMV doesnt work, tpod, and DMT screens are so green its basically unreadable and a host of other problems
Despite all my attempts I still cannot get the flir onto the hud. EDIT- Figured it out. I had that "night" switch that like the radar alt switch is a neck breaker to see with TrackIR. I had the switch mapped to the W Hog but it is a 3 way so I heard the "click" but it was going to the neutral position.. It has to go all the way DOWN.
Yeah, the middle is 'auto' if i recall. Consider changing your trackir axis if you're struggling, reduce the deadzone and increase the sensitivity to exaggerate your movement.
HI MATE, in this video you stated that the MFCD and UFC are clearly visible even if NV gogle is ON, now with current version 2.5.1 if NVGS are set ON the MFD, UFC and the other pannels are too bright and cant use the NVG...am I correct??
It used to be greyscale, it was updated to be greenscale, which is more accurate. Adjust your hud brightness if it's too bright. DCS FLIR rendering needs some work.
I tried a night mission last night. I fly with a Vive & the FLIR was useless. Very little showed up on the MPCD & in one mode the hud was blinding, the other the only thing you could see was roads. I could only use NVG’s & guess where the target was.
Yeah they've made a mess of the FLIR rendering recently. In reality however these systesms are not amazing perfect vision either, they've got quite limited resolutions and generally are designed for navigation rather than combat.
RedKite yeah they aren’t brilliant but they’re better than this. I was Harrier ground crew for 15 years. Used to play with the FLIR & lock to DMT onto landing & hovering jets while I waited for fuel etc. On one occasion I had the NVG’s on & looked up to see it was snowing. You couldn’t see the snow without the NVG’s as the flakes were so small but I could see them clearly.

Haha! nice little stories, yeah i hope we'l see an improvement in them soon, it's been more effective in the past, but ever since 2.5 there's been a big render overhaul that's changed things up, Razbam's not gotten round to correcting for the changes i suspect.
NVG is broke though, trying to carrier ops at night is impossible. Ship is jet black, sea is jet black, can't even see the shores (Normandy Map) I suppose it's not jet black it's green, but may as well be black.
Ah goddamit TDC Slew Axis doesn't work, had to use it in a mission today that didn't have tpod available and couldn't for the life of me figure why it wouldn't move.
Have they fixes the DMT so it can track the moving ground and air targets as the real thing? th-cam.com/video/VVuV3vQc1x8/w-d-xo.html It is called "Tracker" by a meaning of capability track targets, not to "lock on ground". As it is still contrast based tracker, knowing nothing about ground. That is just the cheap way by developers to avoid to build a actual tracking method, that ED made via Unit ID based instead contrast based (why you can't lock on destroyed targets or all builidings as those don't have ID number in game).
Why in the hell is the FLIR not doing its job at night? That seems insane to me. Infrared doesn't care what time of day it is, or am I confused and its not actually FLIR? I mean it says it right on the display softkey. Seems like an easy fix to me for the dev team to correctly model this yet they didnt. Extremely lame and mind boggling IMO.
The DMT or dual mode tracker, is a TV camera and a laser spotter in the tip of the nose, not an IR camera, The FLIR button listed on the MPCD is to switch to the the NAVFLIR instead. The NAVFLIR is a boresighted camera unable to slew, above the nose in front of the cockpit, used for night time navigation and sometimes targeting visually within the Hud projection.

@lovefrog2 yes mine too
@@TheConqueror1453 Probably has been corrected. Im not sure what colors the Harrier's HUD can display, but I don't think it can display white.
i cannot believe ive flown so long in the harrier without even knowing about flir on the hud, that is an amazing feature
Many thanks for your videos. You really do a great job. You always explain the WHY and HOW TO which make things clear. Thank you. I just can say....please continue in this way.
Excellent work. I don't know that I've ever seen a better example of a tutorial. Thank you.
As always a spot on, concise tutorial. Well done man and THANKS! Keep it up!!

Has anyone told you you sound like Richard Ayoade? Thats was ment as a compliment as these videos are very good, keep up the good work.
Haha yes, as a matter of fact i have heard that once or twice :) thanks!
Wonderful video ... chocked full of good information. Thanks for making these tutorial videos!
Hey RedKite,
08:50 We cannot use black & white colors anymore, right? It's green color only now on the HUD. =/
Yep, Greenscale is the correct appearance of the system, it was greyscale for about 6 months until they were able to correct it.
@@RedKiteRender greyscale was better =/
Damn I need to try that NAVFLIR.
I need to see if they've improved nav flir with the new thermal models

Like always! Keep them coming!

Bugs are common on the beta builds, i'd wait for 2.5.1 stable or go back to the release version
ya thats true, but i mean...theres a lot of bugs lol. things that were fine before are broken now. but ya beta i guess.
Merci beaucoup. Amazing videos. You speak very fast for me but.... I try to follow. Thx again buddy
Is DTM working right now (2.5.1) at night? Can't get it to work...
DTM can't see at night, its a TV camera not FLIR, it can still pick up Laser spots however.
Great stuff. Much appreciated!!

When I turn on my nvg, I get a small circle instead of what yours is. How do I switch between those?
The nvg's are part of DCS rather than module specific, DCS changed their NVG overlay since this video was recorded.

I'm struggling getting the FLIR to be displayed on the HUD, I am setting it to night mode, and pressing Sensor select down, but nothing happens.
Is the flir powered up, and that youre pressing the sss down, not aft (its a 5 position hat switch) check your bindings
Nice vid again RedKite- does the Harrier have a current way of tracking a lazer on a moving target to attack at all?
The manual states that DMT cannot track moving targets in any form, however it might be re-considered if they can find evidence it has such ability.
The TGP TPOD does have the ability to track moving objects, although it's not functional enough to use just yet.
ah okay- thanks for the info RedKite
Currently NAVFLIR is in shades of green as opposed to black/white... and blindingly bright. You know what's up with that?
It used to be greyscale, it was updated to be greenscale, which is more accurate. Adjust your hud brightness if it's too bright. DCS FLIR rendering needs some work.
RedKite sure does need a lot of work! Even setting HUD brightness to minimum didn’t help, so I was hoping you’d know of something else.
I tried a night mission last night. I fly with a Vive & the FLIR was useless. Very little showed up on the MPCD & in one mode the hud was blinding, the other the only thing you could see was roads. I could only use NVG’s & guess where the target was.

Friends, how are you? Does anyone flying in the AV8 Harrier know if it is possible to enslave the TPOD to DMT or a Waypoint? and how to do it?
Watch my manual waypoint tutorial for the harrier, its explained there.
tks
Hope they'll add this feature for hornet soon. I thnk she has it.
how do i get this Thermal mod
Go back in time about 5 years. It was how the module released, Greenscale is the correct colour for the NAVFLIR.
Ok let me work on this time traveling machine some more 😂😂
Is the V detector in yet?
The hotspot detector is not in yet, no.
Very nice!
Dude... Now its not black and white ... Right ?... and NVG is looking round ? is all true ?
The NVG simulation has been updated and the navflir hud display is green, yes.
how do u get this jet
It is available for purchase on the eagle dynamics website, the steam release of it is a long way off.
NVG is broke though, trying to carrier ops at night is impossible. Ship is jet black, sea is jet black, can't even see the shores (Normandy Map) I suppose it's not jet black it's green, but may as well be black.
