Caleb is right. When other people in the hours are going to bed I've had to turn off the soundbar and use the Airpods Pro2 with Apple TV. It's a lot more impressive than I was expecting.
Air pods max would be the best solution but apple hasn't updated them yet

Yeah me too. Headphones are one of the best ways to watch movies, they lack the bass that u get from a good sub. But they offer an amazing experience. I almost prefer an oled tablet with Headphones over anything else.
I watch content from my PC with Bluetooth headphones. I watched this video with them. There is no sync issues for me. The wireless on the computer is wifi 6 or AC and my headphones are BT 5.2. If you have outdated wireless on the device or your headphones, audio is not in sync. Unfortunately my car Bluetooth is old tech and doesn't sync with video. Playing just music works fine, though.

I have a great soundbar in an apartment and only use headphones when I’m playing video games. The bass is deep and rich, no complaints from my neighbors
The only time I hear a tv is when I’m in the hallways in my apartment I don’t even hear other people’s TVs.
I am not a display expert, but my understanding is that the physical limitation of LCD panels in blocking light is the gaps between pixels, which are necessary to house the circuitry that addresses each pixel (turns them on or off). And there is a baseline physical limit to how small those gaps can become. The breakthrough is local dimming, and shrinking the dimming zones as far as possible (ideally 1:1 with the pixels, but in economic practice far less than that) and in speeding up the dimming zone response time.
If Caleb ever gives us a Bravia 9 review, maybe we'll see how far it has come ;-)

I am no electronics engineer, but why not hook the local dimming to the luminance signal?
1:1 is what OLED and Micro LED already do.
LCD will never ever match what OLED can do because it uses a backlight that's always on even when showing the color Black.
I installed 3/8 inch thick acoustic sound deadening panels on all 4 walls in my home theatre room in my apartment and I havent had any complaints. It cost 2400 dollars but it was so worth it.
It is possible to overdo acoustic treatment, but if it works for you, that’s all that matters.

@@jonathanbell9349 Simply put, I think excessive absorption can result in unnaturally low levels of reflections that we rely upon to create sense of ambiance, and bass control has its own set of impracticalities in small to moderate sized rooms. As Caleb noted, if you want to avoid any chance of sound transmitting through flimsily constructed walls, and enjoy louder listening levels, headphones should probably be in your arsenal.
Thats a pretty smart way to get the enjoyment you want while not being an inconsiderate to others.

I am glad that I was able to put attached living (apartments/condos/townhouses) behind me so that I can enjoy my music, games, and movies the way I want while without being a disturbance to anyone else. But when I was in that living arrangement, I had a simple bookshelf stereo hooked into my TV via the headphone jack and then hooked up headphones to the stereo if I wanted to crank the volume. I'm happy that audio has evolved a lot more since then.

Great channel and break down of every question. You know what your talking about, and have a passion for it, and its valued among your followers.
For tuners, you could look at a couple of things weak signal and over-driven signals. Over-driving is easy as you just need to add a variable gain amp/power inserter and set it to the 'nuclear' setting. For weak signal, you could try to find some attenuators and insert them in line to see when channels drop out. Alternatively, you could just get a bunch of splitters and stack them in line to see how much power loss the tuner can endure.
You'll have to do it for ATSC 1.0 & 3.0 tuners as well. ATSC 3.0 tuners have automatic gain control functions built into them.
On the LCD v OLED thing, even OLED has taken almost twenty years to even get to this point (Sony XEL 1 first commercial/consumer OLED?). And there absolutely have been other display technologies at cheaper prices, the biggest and saddest story being SED which took the best of all worlds to make a kind of 'reverse' CRT that worked more like an LCD. But alas Toshiba's greed and fighting with Canon in the courts doomed it. It's not always just about the potential of the tech.
Would signal attenuation simulate tuner sensitivity tests. Back in "the day" working for a major cable company, we used to install inline rg6 signal attenuators to drop "lound" signals to get the signal within spec we were looking to get. Houses closest to the amplifiers suffered the most from "too much" signal. If I remember the attenuators were extremely affordable and compact (just a little longer than the fitting on the end of the cable).
You could attenuate the signal into non existence with enough attenuators installed in line.
Seems pretty easy and do-able.

Tuner evaluation: Actually, you’re in a perfect location-if you purchase a calibrated attenuator. It would be pretty easy to compare tuner sensitivity by attenuating the incoming signal until a given tuner looses it. One limitation: if a tv has leakage (receives the station with no antenna), then a more distant station must be used. All you really need is an attenuator, a relatively weak tv signal, and a reference tv to keep as a standard.
Sennheiser also makes some pretty decent headphones. Love my 175's!
Tuners, and setup of same. In the section where you select the actual channels that will be tuned, I've seen TV's that will actually show you what's on the air (or cable) as an aid to selecting, or deselecting it. This makes the task fairly easy.
On the other hand, some do channel selection blind (Tivo), where you just see hundreds of channels with clue as to whether or not you can actually receive it, or what's on it. The only option there is to leave setup, step through ALL the channels, and record which ones you want to pick in channel select, then go through the selection process.

You should really check out this speaker system for small to medium to a fairly large size room. Its priced at a decent sound bar level, but man does it pack an impressive punch with the sub woofer and movie experience. Mind you, you have to adjust the audio levels for each speaker depending on situation, but you can do so to have low audio to just hear the voices, or crank it up and watch an action movie that will get you a knock on the door lol. I have two of them. One in my living room and man cave and I am very happen with them. The only downside is the very small remote, and having to control to each speakers audio volume each time with no presets, and it only offers a digital optical connection. Its the Logitech Z906 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System - THX, Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Certified
Instead of wondering if LCD/LED can be improved to block out the backlight, I think the far better question is how we can make OLED TVs with longer lifespans. My main living room TV is a Sony LCD from 2010, and it still looks darn good all these years later even though it's not 4K or HDR.
Can OLEDs deliver lifespans of 14+ years without signs of burn-in?
Instead of oled research for longer life, I think they should work on advancing plasma technology which is more organic than oled.
It seems like I read an article or watched a video about the development of a (printable?) non-organic LED that might be exactly what you describe. I would be self-emissive but since it's not organic, it won't degrade and burn in like OLED. It might have been a sneak-peak Caleb got at a trade show?
Newer LG OLED's have improved significantly in regards to burn-in, some of that having to do with preventative measures and settings now implemented.

@@Jza-GZa40k Given the popularity of LG OLED's, that's not going to happen. Despite was you seem to think, LG OLED's are some of the best TV's out there, and lots of people seem to agree.
When they can make an LED panel that can be seen from an angular view, I might consider it. Nothing beats OLED at that yet.

I have an AV receiver, two tower speakers, upfiring speakers, and dual SVS 3000 Micros in my space. I asked 3 neighbors about the noise (the two beside me and the one below me) and they said they could barely hear it at relatively loud (for me, which is quiet relative to most A/V people) volumes. But my condo has VERY thick walls.

I didn't realize that people still use TV tuners to pull in local broadcasts.. I never really thought of the TV tuner being important in a TV so that's kind of good to know
More and more people are 'cutting the cord' and canceling cable. It's become a game of "how many hundreds of channels of useless garbage that no one want to watch can we pack into 'packages' along with the few channels people do want, to make them pay hundreds of dollars a month for the 5-6 channels they watch?" for the cable companies. So instead, people use OTA antennas for local content and streaming services to watch the exclusives they're actually interested in. WIth ATSC3, the local broadcasters are going to be able to transmit in 4K, and also may be able to do pay-per-view type stuff, which some people are not excited about.
@@RickinICT yeah I just was unaware of how many people actually use it. I cut the cord on cable years ago and I am still a physical media collector even though that is coming to a very abrupt in niche market. I do have streaming services but it is really for my kids and my wife. I hardly watch any of them to be quite Frank, I would be totally happy with just the movie collection that I have a Blu-ray player and a TV and my surround sound.. In this day and age I get all my local news from my phone to be honest being a truck driver (locally) sometimes I just don't have a lot of time when I'm out there for 12 to 14 hours on a work day. So that's when my phone comes in handy.
Tell the truth to the guy with all in-ceiling speakers. The only way he's getting any sound that's good in the least is to rip those speakers out, maybe leave 4 for atmos if they're in the right spots and then either install in-wall speakers or speakers on stands. Not doing anybody any good lieing to them though, they'd just be out of even more money and still be in a shitty situation.

You should never do all ceiling with Atmos. Never. Completely counter to the entire point of the format (and the others as well)

Oled is simpler and much easier on the eyes without local dimming that is almost always slightly out of sync that varies depending on the content. Its especially handy when you want to turn down the blue at night, on oled it scales down linearly, on lcd if you turn down the blue you still got all this blue that you can't see coming from the cheap as LED's behind it.
Hi Caleb, if the TV signal levels at your location are repeatable then you're in a great postion to test tuners. Repeatability can be tested daily using an inexpensive DVR* with signal level meter (iView, Mediasonic etc). Once repeatability is confirmed choose a VHF-lo, two (band end) VHF-hi & two (band end) UHF stations, insert a 75 Ohm switched attenuator into the antenna cable & increase attenuation (in dBs) until the picture disappears. The TV with the highest attenuation value has the most sensitive tuner! There's some preparatory work to do choosing stations & the testing will be time consuming. *P.S. I use a DVR & Rasp Pi HDMI display to optimize my attic TV antenna position.
And even if you don't test the tuner itself, it would still be nice to know about the TV's channel watching user experience. How does channel management work? How does the channel guide work? I have a 10 year old Samsung and there are so many things that annoy me about the way it works. I guess I'm spoiled by my recently cancelled Xfinity box. Hopefully newer tvs are better but is there a difference between brands? I'd like the channel guide to only show my favorite channels and I'd like the program guide to update automatically instead of me doing it by hand for each channel every day. Is that a thing nowadays?
I'm not too fond of the visible STUTTER on OLED TVs too. There are a lot of SD TV channels and
the upscaling is better at LED TVs as well ( because of the longer lag time )
I mean, the LCD vs OLED question, Dolby invented a way to help mitigate this issue, by doubling the layers for colour and brightness control, by making 2 separate layers to control this. Then Hisense picked up and have been tinkering with it. They originally had it listed as the ULED line, though it may have changed into the newer Dual Cell line that's been covered here before. Though I haven't seen too many updates with it in a while.
TCL QM8B is almost under 500 here in the UK, it's like £538, I still don't know if its as good as the QM8 since both are the exact same tech and product chips inside but it's worth a look
Something to note about the Atmos vs 7.1 setup, there ie hardly any content that uses true 7.1 audio. All of streaming services output either 5.1 or Atmos and I checked on the back of a bunch of my Blu-ray disc's and only a couple supported 7.1. I was disappointed because I spent a lot of effort hooking up some surround back speakers with their own dedicated amps and a wireless transceiver only to find out that I can't really utilize them.

By the time it truly get close micro led will probably be viable at consumer level prices and obviously every year lcd gets better oled also gets better. Lcd will also likely always have its motion and viewing angle problems that i don't think will ever be gone
In an apartment just get tye Q930c as its a slightly turned down Q990 with no loss in quality
I think the same about LCD technology. Apart from the constant size decreasing of mini-LEDs and becoming them more and more intelligent and precise, backlight is the only main issue and challenge to resolve the last LCD problem. LCD is still recyclable and lasts much more than the OLED, but their production, and evolving, aren't that profitable (OLED is more expensive and lasts less, and there's no chance to recycle it). LCD won't die yet, but in a future, longer life span OLED, then cheaper, will surely surpass LCD, like this surpassed CRTs in the past...
Biggest issue is oled still has the burn in issue of static images which is not a problem with the LCD panels.
Use case of the tv for many still dictates which tech may be more suited to a users viewing habits as well.
@@billwiley7216 sure it is! The one and possibly the main LCD advantage is certainly its amazing matured life span, fix ability, and recycling. I have a 2010 nokia x5-01, for 14 years, and its TN-TFT LCD panel is still fully functional; my mom's Philco TV is 5 years old and its VA LCD panel looks amazing. I rather go for LCD so far btw, but my main comment makes part of a hard reality this display types will unavoidably reach, if manufacturers fix OLED subpixels worn-out (the first to start to die are the blue ones), burn-in and fix the yet lower PWM and brightness for full display...
I think even if you have a great tv antenna location, you can still test TV tuners. The amount of channels you get might not test how good a tuner is, but rather how bad the tuner actually is. I know I'd like to see this information in a review.
W-HVA panels being close to OLED like viewing angles coming in tv's next year or 2026 will be the next huge game hanger for LCD.. I think this will puts LCD tech over the top of OLED when this happens for any environment besides a pitch dark room imo
Mini-leds are fine to my eyes. Plus me being retired my tv is on a lot during the day so I don't want to worry about burn-in. I do have an oled in my bedroom and use it at night only. So I'm not anti oled.
The tuner on the Sony A90J is kinda bad, I've got a really nice antenna, line of sight outdoors and 20 ft high and it's pretty slow at securing a signal. There's mention of this online as well.

There was a Liquid Crystal Display that had deep blacks before, what they did was sandwich 2 LCD plannels together. This worked. It was at a trade show a number of years ago and nobody cared ? I wish tv companies would revisit this idea.
That was Hisense or TCL testing the concept for the consumer market. Sony uses the same technology for its reference monitor system but those are like 30,000$.
There’s a reason they don’t. Requires a much stronger backlight (more power draw and a lot of heat) to push through both panels and with EU regulations it’s not feasible to make them very bright and meet power requirements. Eu is too big of a market to make a non-compliant product . There are also some issues with motion clarity as the panels can behave differently (likely due to the “back” screen being warmer than the front). I wish it was simpler as there is promise (mostly cost) but I don’t think we will see it in consumer tvs.
Hisense released the u9dg and it has this technology. The problem is the manufacturing cost and having enough brightness to get a meaningful HDR experience. You're kind of stuck with not quite as good contrast and not quite as good flagship led brightness leaving you with a weird in between that no one really wanted.
I believe there are some reference monitors that sandwich 2 LCD layers together such as Sony’s monitor, but those cost as much as a car. No TVs like that, unfortunately.

2023 TCL Q7 and Hisense U7N are definitely the way to go. Both are $599 for the 55" model. You're not going to do better than those in that price range unless you find a good deal on an open box version of an even better TV somewhere. I could see both going to $500, maybe even a little lower on the TCL.
Can I get a link to the antenna "review " talked about. I scanned back about 2 years and didn't see it.
Q 2 - A 2013 AV receiver most probably wouldn't have the option of switching from 7.1 to 5.1.2. At the most , you got the option to have zone 2 speakers.
Also, 'height' channel in AVR is not exactly same thing as Atmos in celing configuration.

Can HDMI EARC or ARC be used as a regular HDMI video output?
Lack of light is always better then blocking light (hence why better backlight control is where they ended up going), plus having full light that you block, is a waste of energy, and would generate a lot of extra unneeded heat. You actually can go darker and block more light with dual cell technology, but it was expensive, thicker, and actually too dark, to hard to get enough light through the parts you wanted to be effective for most. Where they are still developing LCD tech to try and go darker is actually in the projector space where you dont have led backlights to control, where you actually do in almost all(?) cases your light source is the same intensity for the entire picture and your contrast is completly controlled by the LCD matrix and the screen material. There was only one laser ultra short through projector that I've even ever heard of trying to stear the light output to where it was needed and actually darken it where ti wasn't. Thats a good question for the show actually, I could see bulb tech not being able to block light in a zone basis, but would we ever see bright enough led's or oleds to replace a high pressure bulb for abcklight controllable projectors, or laser light engines that could "scan" the pixels and give differnt light outputs based on what the pixel or zone calls for? Prjectors are already doing alot especially with the shifting ones, maybe its too complicated
They just need to shrink micro-led and make it less expensive.

I'm also in an apartment and i don't think you answered the question. I already use a sound bar in my bedroom with a tv. I plan on getting another tv for the living room plus a sound bar. I was looking at the Polk Signa 4 as an option. Which sound bar do you recommend.

What is the difference between IPS and DLED
In response to the headphones, i have a LG 55c8, would Ace headphones and a beam 2nd gen running on arc since the c8 doesnt have earc, sound better, or airpods max (or wait for max 2's since im not sepcifically in a rush) with 2017 apple tv 4k. I already have the apple tv 4k, and also have an lg atmos soundbar from the same year 2018 as the tv. I dont mind spending $1000 for the sonos parts if theyre that much better than the airpods. So im just wondering about headphone audio for movies to not disturbed neighbors.

I had an Onkyo 7 channel set up a while back, only ever saw one movie with 7 channel sound, dont know if things have changed
exactly, they have stopped producing 7.1 and moved to Atmos 5.1.2 or DTS MA 5.1.

My experience of cheap tvs here in the uk isnt very good, so its actually better to spend a bit more money in the long term.
Still have 2 6-Series TCL's (R625, R635) performing perfectly. Both were $500. If a $500 TV lasts 5+ years, I'm pretty happy.

TCL TVs might have the same model no's as the US ones but they are lower spec and reliability :-(
Most of them barely last 2 years on average.
With LCD, I wouldn’t be surprised if they develop a technology that diverts the light to a Vanta-Black screen layer offset from the original pixel line, reflecting 0% light.

If 1080p from 10 plus feet away looks bad to you, IDK ? I've got flagship Plasmas that are still working, have Never had any problems, nothing 'burned' in, blacks are unreal, refresh rate, the best and can be watched at Any angle. Why would I buy a disposable, lightweight, plastic, unproven, cheap 4K unless I was sitting a few feet away ? I do have a favorite LED / LCD, and that's my Sharp ELITE Pro - 70x5fd, THX Cert., auto dimming with over 500 zones, built like a Tank, and beat out every TV on the market at the time including plasmas. ( the KURO that I have was no longer made and was not in the competition ) I believe the KURO is better. FYI - I picked up these $6k - $9k TV's about 10 years ago for around $1K. Still working fine, even use the 70" ELITE to game on. Oh, and upon research found out the ELITE was the Best 3D Tv made, has active glasses too.
I think QLED will catch up in the next couple of years
More mini LEDs and better algorithms to handle them
We already see that sony's flagship in 2024 is an LED that is so close to OLED it doesn't make anysense to belittle the technology anymore

why the colors looks better on IPS than VA
OK Caleb, now how about a 43" under $600! My 14 y.o. Vizio 32" is giving out, and frankly, my 76 y.o. eyes probably couldn't tell the difference between mini-led, oled, or any other style. I'm OTA with Netflix and MHZ, have no interest in using it for anything that gets me tracked and spied on. I have a Roku box and it's ok.
It is not that there isn't solution for LCD to block ( most ) backlight. There are actually LCD Tech at blocking ( or reducing ) backlight with Dual Panel system. As what is used in the Sony Reference Display. The only problem is no one manage to figure out how to do it cheaply, and more importantly with consumer required energy efficiency. The Mini LED backlight is also expensive ( for now ) and increasing zones will increase circuitry cost, heat dissipation cost and computation cost. Had cost not be an issue we could have 40K zones with a Dual Panel system. But if you are paying high price for a Dual Panel Massive zones Mini LED LCD you might as well get a MicroLED Display. So LCD is still marching on, the Panel is still getting improvement like HVA. we will get more zones, mini LED gets cheaper etc. I dont see how LCD could ever be back and compete with OLED in Smartphone and Tablet or Laptop. But at TV size, especially large TV size 65inch+, I would still pick LCD over OLED display. Hopefully with Bravia 9 we will get to see where LCD is now and where it can continue to improve. Cant wait to see that Sony review.

@@davidbenning10 VA panels help LCDs look good and with a proper dimming backlight as well. The Mini LED set are getting very close to OLED like.
'-' i can watch on both and sometimes is not that very different like you amonerds swear they are. Most of the time, I rather go for the way colors are displayed on LCD material, because of its natural white/grey balance, which doesn't push everything to a forced annoying reddish tint💀
Liquid Crystals can’t make their own power so they need a backlight to light them up. The only way you can block the light is by turning off the back light and just making it black. That’s pretty much what OLEDs do when they need to make black the pixel is not lit. There no way the crystal can block the light 100% it would have been done by now if it could. The best we can do is perfect the backlighting system and we are getting close with mini led.
When you sandwich 2 LCD layers together, then it can block the light. Reference monitors such as what Sony has already do that, but those are $30,000 lol
I use wired headphones. The use of a subwoofer will piss off your neighbors, I know I don't like to hear it.

The only way you can make an LCD with the contrast similar to OLED is to put two LCD layers on top of each other (dual layer). Unfortunately they are inefficient and hard to manufacture, so they are only made for professionals. Mini-led is the next best thing which is gaining popularity and combined with the ease of manufacturing, efficiency and cost, they have a bright future IMO.
A mini led is also a lcd, using lcd panels. mini led is not a distinct technology from lcd. it's only in the backlighting where it differs and is superior to FALD, edge lit etc.

This LCD vs LED discussion was rediculous. Caleb made the mini-LED (which is LCD with mini LED backlighting) sound like a Rube Goldberg contraption. Have go to FOMO to hear the real trade off in image performance between OLED and mini-LED/LCD. The Bravia 9 mini-LED has really changed the discussion with its ability to attenuate the backlight relative to a pixel in a more linear way, instead of just on-off. The real advantage for the Bravia 9 will come with 4000 nits peak mastered content.
Agree. OLED has its own set of problems. At the end of the day, it's all about compromise and use case scenario.

I think LEDs are better than oled,They display better the highlights,Get bright,Have no draw backs and don’t dim like Oleds and are less expensive whilst displaying deep blacks way good enough,with great colour and great black levels not crushing,Full arrays and mini leds done right are stellar usually from Sony and Pana for the best accuracy,OLEDs are a gimmick and way too expensive for a Tv.

Get yourself a 55 Hisense U8 4k 120hz VRR and low input lag.
They DO exist, Sony's own Trimaster Pro Grade Studio monitors but they're like stupid expensive. I'm talking 10K+ for a stupid little monitor. These monitors are used by HOLLYWOOD movie studio to calibrate movie colors. Basically, the "Gold" standard.
Gold standard? All the while they pump out movies that have a blue or green tint to them with desaturated colors...

I lived in a town house for a few years and I never heard my neighbours TVs only when I was in the hallways and it wasn’t a cheap building it was older yes but not rundown at all. I’d play my movies pretty loud never got a complaint at my door.

If an LCD panel. As in just the Liquid Crystal panel. If it would hit 10,000-15,000 native contrast and really good uniformity in black and grey. It would honestly almost kill OLED.
Especially with the new W-HVA panels that has built in wide viewing angle to match OLED basically. There wouldn't be anything left for OLED but faster pixel response times.
With the MiniLED backlight advancing and more zones and better 22-bit control etc. When the TVs like what Sony does hit 10,000 zones and coupled with a higher native contrast LCD panel.
It's basically so close that the OLED advantage is gone. It's already almost 90% of an OLED today with the XR90. It literally have the Same contrast levels in almost all scenes.
I have a Samsung with FALD and it offers 99.9% what oled has to offer. In a blind test you could barely tell the difference
before oleds tv..LCD had best blacks . our pioneered launch 40inch intex lcd tv bought in 2010 had best picture quality and blacks . unfortunately its inverter chip went of and LCDs spare parts were nt available . hv ditch it in 2021 to garbage guys .
bull...before oleds the pioneer kuro plasma had the best blacks out of all available tv's. you will find every video professional agree with this.

I own a Sony A8H and Hisense U8K and I can say the Hisense is more impressive to watch. If you cant afford QD-OLED I would get a high end mini led over a normal OLED.
I've been comparing Hisense tvs to all the other brands and it seems like Hisense has the best color and picture.. with the best prices also
