Very unique indeed, not the average EMD non turbo sound. I believe the Behr cooler fans on these locomotives caused the sound, there were four fans hydraulically driven and connected in a cascade arrangement. As coolant temperature rose more fans would kick in, this could often be heard on heavier trains as the start of an additional fan was clearly audible.
A very odd train composition behind 5505, two M2, an I5 couchette and then the ordinary orange DMS + 3x I10 which was the normal composition for the Liège-Luxembourg IR trains. They could be used as strengthening stock for this train, but passengers would preferably sit in the I10s anyway as these were much more comfy.
