The language barrier question - that is me and my boyfriend TO A T. My boyfriend (who's also Korean) and I communicate primarily in English. The longer we are together, the more I use slang with him and speak at my normal pace. But overall, he says he can understand me well because I speak a little slower and more clearly than others. HOWEVER, we also have these weird conversations/arguments over something like colors. I'll call something blue, and he will be like, "no, it's SKY blue." But I love it - it makes for hilarious stories later.

I thought you would mention it, since its truly one of the most authentic and realistic kdramas that contents meaningful values. Of course, that's only my opinion but its the one and only kdrama I would always recommend!^^

i had my first solo traveling experience in nyc the week after thanksgiving and it was amazing! i’m hopefully moving to korea next year and i’m so excited to do all of the solo traveling around the country 😭
cari cakes i think it helps that ive done small things by myself just around my city-eating at restaurants, grocery shopping, watching movies. i agree that it’s a good way to discover yourself, for sure. 👌🏻 sidenote, and i hope this isn’t weird lmao but you’re probably my favorite youtuber living in korea, so i hope we get a chance to maybe meet one day once i move there!

I can see why non-native speakers would be able to understand you better than most of us Americans! You have good diction, and you don't have an unpleasant accent. I speak really fast and have a southern accent, and even people in my day-to-day life have trouble understanding me if I'm prattling on without making an effort to speak clearly. I'm really worried no one will be able to understand me when I go abroad ;_;
i used to speak really fast but being here and surrounded by people who couldnt understand me, i slowed down :) im sure you'll learn how to be understood too^^ i love southern accents!

I’m a teacher here in Korea and I feel so bad for my boyfriend sometimes because I naturally talk really fast 😭 he’ll just tell me “I’m pretending to understand right now” and that’s when I know I need to calm down LOL. Otherwise, language isn’t an issue.

My wife of almost 20 years is Korean from Korea. She came to the States for school. But even after 3 years, she did not have much spoken English. So, when we started dating, every communication was in English. I was getting my PhD in English Lit. And all my friends were getting PhD's at a major research university--often in English Lit. Within a year, her English was amazing. I didn't realize that half the reason why she liked me was because I was totally improving her English. I was like a walking English lesson.
The blue color description is also evidence of how for example, people perceive color differently based on their language. in Japanese there are specific words for blue, versus in English everything that looks blue or is blue is just that, versus in Japanese there are different words for different shades of blue, there’s even a study published on this, i read this years ago but can’t remember where i found it. I guess Korean is similar to Japanese in that sense due to your boyfriend’s frustration of “why is that JUST blue?” it also makes me realize how broad english is, not a super detailed language and thus as a person with synesthesia it’s quite difficult to describe colours, LOL
I more meant that in korean, my goal is to be simply understood (since im not fluent yet) so im okay to be general whereas my boyfriend (who is fluent in english) is more concerned with making his exact feeling understood so he wants to know more specific words.

Ohhh it always threw me off when my Korean friends would overuse “hard.” For whatever reason, the way we use the word “tough” to describe something just fits better than “hard.” OR just saying “wow that’s a tough situation, you must be sad” my Korean friends would just say aw your so hard lol and I’d be like noppppe that doesn’t sound right lol
It's not that they are over using it. It's just that english and korean are 2 completely different languages and if for example a korean person is learning english he/she will firstly use newly learned english words in a way he/she would use it in a korean language....or vice versa of course. And when that happens you'll get some...odd sentences hahaha I dont know if I explained it well...
me oh of course, I know that. On the flip side, I spent my time in Korea with very beginner knowledge of Korean and asked the same questions/used the same phrases over and over to my Korean friends too :)
I guess it depends on where you're from. Here in New Zealand English is one of 3 official languages (the others are Maori and NZ sign language) and the most widely spoken of the three. We use the words 'tough' and 'hard' interchangeably, which often results in hilarious reactions from new immigrants and tourists who aren't used to it. eg; "He's hard to handle = he's tough/difficult to deal with or my personal favourite "I'm hard". The latter isn't used much by the younger generations since we're well aware of the potential lols, but you might occasionally hear an older person use it to refer to themselves as strong or tough.

Aww! Glad you guys found one another. I think watching TV shows/drama about the country is the quickest way to learn the language and understand the culture and humor. Friends were my show aha. He is def way more Americanize than the other Korean partner I saw on the other TH-cam channel. So glad I found your channel. Very relaxing to watch and it is like listening to a friend.
Ohhh it always threw me off when my Korean friends would overuse “hard.” For whatever reason, the way we use the word “tough” to describe something just fits better than “hard.” OR just saying “wow that’s a tough situation, you must be sad” my Korean friends would just say aw your so hard lol and I’d be like noppppe that doesn’t sound right lol
right?! that was always a weird one for me too hahahha
YEAH. tough is much more accurate for that sense
It's not that they are over using it. It's just that english and korean are 2 completely different languages and if for example a korean person is learning english he/she will firstly use newly learned english words in a way he/she would use it in a korean language....or vice versa of course.
And when that happens you'll get some...odd sentences hahaha

me oh of course, I know that. On the flip side, I spent my time in Korea with very beginner knowledge of Korean and asked the same questions/used the same phrases over and over to my Korean friends too :)
I guess it depends on where you're from. Here in New Zealand English is one of 3 official languages (the others are Maori and NZ sign language) and the most widely spoken of the three. We use the words 'tough' and 'hard' interchangeably, which often results in hilarious reactions from new immigrants and tourists who aren't used to it.
eg; "He's hard to handle = he's tough/difficult to deal with or my personal favourite "I'm hard". The latter isn't used much by the younger generations since we're well aware of the potential lols, but you might occasionally hear an older person use it to refer to themselves as strong or tough.

I felt like I had already seen the same things about Korea over and over, but your videos showed a more unique, fresh side of the country that didn't feel "mainstream-y" if that makes sense and I love it.
