Picking up a mint condition TD-25kv with a Roland CK-100 keyboard amp and DW-5000 hi hat stand for $1600 this week. I know a lot of people like the TD-17kvx better, but for whatever reason, I love the sounds of the 25 (especially with the Drumtec downloads). Either way, I'm thinking it's a great deal. Any thoughts?

I've been following e-drums for more than 20 years, and finally just purchased some 🙂. I suspect the biggest mistake (avoided with research) is picking drums that are not somewhat compatible with acoustic. I.e. you practice/learn wrong. The other big no no is drums that can't keep up and sound like a machine gun. Even the TD-10 was a little like this. It's like buying a keyboard certified for exams. Anything less is essentially a toy.

    1. Letting a salesperson tell you what to buy - do you own research
    2. Having high expectations and low budget - edrums are expensive
    3. Buying just because its on sale - find something that suits your needs and goals instead
    4. Buy now and upgrade later mindset - you'll save more money buying a better version from the start
    5. Giving up too early on your e-kit - explore your kit and learn how to use it to its fullest potential before returning it
I've watched this video many times as I'm preparing to buy my first e-kit, so I put a summary here for me to come back to 😂 Thanks for all your help, Justin!

I don't think the upgrade plan is a mistake. It can be sometimes, but I actually think "save up and buy a better drumset" is a mistake just as often. If I'm looking at a $500 drumset as a beginner, chances are I don't have the budget for a $3000-4000 drumset, or maybe even a $1500-2000 set, so saving up is going to take months, maybe even a year. If I put the same money I would have been saving for that higher-end drumset into upgrades, I may end up lose out on a little bit of money. But I will have gained months, or maybe year(s) of experience actually playing drums in the time I would have just been waiting for something to play. And, by playing, I'd have a better idea of what I like, so when I upgrade I know exactly what I want. That seems way more valuable than saving a bit of money down the road.

      @uebergeek 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I had a similar reaction. I got back into drumming after a long hiatus about seven years ago with an inexpensive, but not junk, e-kit. (I think it was the second cheapest kit in a major manufacturer's e-drum line.) Over seven years I've upgraded the snare, both cymbals, and the module. And I may swap out the hi-hat next. It occurs to me that I could spend more than I would have in the first place buying the next kit up, but on the other hand, a) I didn't know seven years ago if I'd stick with it, or which things I'd eventually like and not about the kit, b) Some current gear -- like my new module -- didn't even exist seven years ago. I think they wanted more $ for a comparable module back then. But I'm glad I started with a decent kit by a manufacturer that's well-invested in e-drums and also makes higher end stuff. c) I didn't have to lay out all the money at once -- much easier on the budget to do it over time. I agree, if you're thinking you'll upgrade a bunch of stuff in a short time, be sure to crunch some numbers, or consider a kit somewhere in the middle. But if it's a matter of waiting to get drumming til you save up for your dream kit... I'm not sure I'd go that route. Especially since as a beginner, or new to e-kits, you're not always sure which things you'll be fine with and which things will drive you crazy. Having been at it awhile now, if I were to buy another kit, I'd probably go with one I don't expect to upgrade soon. I realize, seven years is probably a longer time frame than most people are thinking about. Still, as a beginner, I think going for something inexpensive from a solid manufacturer with a good upgrade path over the next two or three years is an option to consider.

I agree on this, and I'm in that place where I want to buy my first kit ever knowing nothing about drums in general, it's almost a "Ill buy it to see if I like it or have some potential to learn it" so saving a bunch of money for something that I don't know if I would be able to learn doesn't seem like a good idea, now either way I would still want to buy the best I can get with the money that I will spend, 500$ is a good starting point I guess, although I live in a country where getting a 1k monthly salary is really hard and everything imported is actually more expensive so I'm a bit fucked :P

My pick for an entry level drum kit is the Yamaha DTX 400 line. For around $500 the samples packed into the module are the best available at this price point.
I admit the hardware is a bit cheezy and I had to improvise a support for the snare to keep it from falling as I played. The interface is awkward as well, but if you connect the free app to it the controls are quite clear and makes it much easier to tweek the sounds to your liking!
I have gigged with this toy and received many compliments on the quality of sound. Many people were expecting to find a standard 5 piece acoustic kit but were pleasantly surprised when they got to the stage to see it. I also enjoy the versatility of being able to switch sound to match the style of music.
I have experienced the quality of a high end e-kit having played in a band (as a bass player) with a chap who owned Roland's flagship Vdrums coming in at approximately $8K. Having experienced the quality (noodling on rehearsal breaks) of this kit helped me decide on the DTX 400 as my budget was not so grand.
Thank you for such an informative video on the subject !
My wish is for acoustic drummers to give up the earplugs and come join us e-drummers!

My wife (54) said she'd like to learn to play drums. I had to spend months doing research, including watching all of the 65 drums videos. My first recommendation to her was, plan on getting a better kit after you've played for a year and like it. But, just get the best throne first. She got the Roc-n-Soc, and just loves it. We got the Alesis turbo. Yes, yes, I know everything about it. I completely modded the pedals to feel and function perfectly, and the big thing....I modded the cymbals and hi-hat to improve the sensitivity by well over 100%. Is she going to upgrade at some point....of course, but this kit is a joy for her to learn on.

Buying the better drum set initially really resonates with me. I had planned to buy a TD-11 and then gradually upgrade it to td-11kv. After much research I realized that it would have ended up costing me more than buying a TD-25. So ended up just buying the 25. Solid Advice!!!

I always say this, and I believe the most important thing on an electronic drumset is the accuracy, it means the highest range of velocity possible so it makes you play the most natural on that.

Absolutely right on having to educate yourself. Buying music equipment, voting, or getting your next car... you need to know before you go! Great advice. Also, while looking for information make sure you are listening to people with a track record of knowing what they're talking about. DON'T put much stock in comments and "reviews" from the many people online with an opinion and no verifiable professional drumming or performing experience. The internet has given a voice to every dolt with a cell phone, so you even have to research your research.

After over 50 years of professional playing I just bought my 1st electronic kit. It's the Alesis dm6 usb kit and I couldn't be happier! It's eveything it's cracked up to be. I took my time setting it up, about 90 minutes cuz I wanted to make sure I set it up right with the tom mounts facing in the right direction for my height and all the tightening pins on the outside of the kit for easy adjustment. I've played on hundreds of kits in my career and I can tell you the drum sounds and action/response of the pads are just fine. I like a compact kit where everything is within easy comfortable reach and this kit, with the 12" cymbals, fits the bill, although it can be set up wider but then the placement of the snare will suffer. All around great kit for the beginning student or the professional who wants to keep his/her chops up in a limited space or where you don't want to disturb your neighbors or housemates. Headphones work great! I wouldn't use this kit for gigs though. It's not designed for wear and tear and you'll wear out the tightening pins and joints which will make for an unstable set-up. I was lucky. I found this kit in new condition on ebay for a hundred bucks (plus shipping). Well worth the money! It was only used 4 or 5 times. Still looks and feels brand new. I used this same kit at one of the music schools I taught at in Las Vegas and I didn't like it.
But new out of the box and set up right, completely different story. If you set it up nice and tight, take care of it and don't abuse it, you should get a decade or more use out of it.
My only question is: can I upgrade the brain/module to a Nitro or some other module? And will I have to change the snake or could I use the old one?
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World!

So true.. The store guy sold me the td11kv instead of the alesis crimson I'd planned due to budget and that really wanted to keep playing in store.. Then because I was over budget at that time I had to keep upgrading later for things like a ride bell.. Which really is more expensive than buying them as a set.
My mistake was not going with what made me happy and felt good to play.. I appreciate aspects of the td11kv; the durability, supernatural (makes hits sound variable and less machine gun).. But buying an instrument is more about the feel sometimes.. And I preferred the feel of the alesis.

Great video, thanks for the information. Will definitely take heed when buying my next kit.
My biggest mistake as a beginner (i'm still a beginner) was listening to people saying, just buy any old shitty kit because as long as you can learn on it, it doesn't matter, you'll find a better kit later. That maybe true for some basics, but cheap skating on a kit. The main problem is cheap sometimes equals crappy sensors, meaning there will be times you'll hit a certain part of the kit and it just don't register the hit or you realize you can't do a rim shot or you can't do ghost notes very well because the sensors don't read the sensitivity of the hit very well. Having a kit that fails on you or just cannot cater to the type of music you like as you are trying learn, makes it just more frustrating to learn.
Look at the style of music you like and make sure the kit can cater to that. If your'e into metal you may want to use a double kick pedal eventually, make sure the kit can do that. One of the first things i did to my cheap kit was purchase a new kick pad and pedal because the one that came with it sounded terrible and kept missing kicks. Also if you do eventually jump onto an acoustic kit (maybe at a friends house or something, like i have done) with a real pedal after you have been using some crappy cheap plastic kick pedal with no beater, it just doesn't feel the same. I found playing on a real pedal with a beater and tension adjustment was way different. My advice is to try learn on a real pedal that you can adjust to your foot or get something as close as you can to it.
I actually found a broken Yamaha KP65 tower pad on Ebay for $25 (turned out to be a wire that just needed to be soldered back on), and a Tama Iron Cobra 200 kick pedal for $55. So already after paying $300 i was now another $80 into the cost. I still have the kit and have learn't a lot, but i can tell my current kit is limiting my ability to progress.
I'm looking to spend around $600 on my next kit. My advice, read as many reviews as you can from people that have actually used the kit for a few months. Research and read reviews. Thanks.

this really helps big time, I just bought my cousin's 5 year old a drum kit the pawn shop offered me for $100 and the kicks are missing, asking price on this kit was $300, sale price origonally probably 600... it's a discontinued brand and it's cool and all but fi the kid's drum dies than he has nothing and it's gonna be tantrum time.. than I'm wondering if it's upgradeable and it sounds like it is so we can spend time on this thing and take the kid to space as a family on fixing that situation. I'm glad to know we can swap these parts out. Thanks a lot for your help in understanding what I just got into.

Actually stopped at 02:41 - I go to Johnny Roadhouse in Manchester, England and you have a guitarist on strings, a drummer on drums & percussion, an organist with over 40 years playing on Keys, so not everywhere is like you describe. I do advise going a Pro - shop - they have people who know their onions and gear too. Not only that I've had them say if you spend £X you can also get some of this and that thrown in. So, I got some Evans heads - full kit's worth, a Pearl Tea Cup cymbal and stand arm and got a bass string pack thrown in and strap. Guitar centre and Dawson's music in Manchester are also pretty good. (tip flash cash - they don't want you leaving with all that cash so deals will appear!). Not there now but Bone Cats' of Middleton was the place to get guitars.

I really like this video cause I used to have a drum kit that I got for $100 on eBay, it was cheap, broken, and in all honestly just a practice kit with sounds, I eventually got rid of it cause I couldn't stand it after about 8 months of using it, but now I'm getting back into drumming and plan on getting the alesis command x, I'm not looking for something that is high dollar and can do everything under the sun, just something that will help me get back into it. And reading reviews, forums, watching videos, and looking at everything the kit can do, I seem to trust it and think it's the right kit for me. And this video is helping me choose carefully which kit to choose. I was originally gonna go with the nitro kit but figured I'd probably get back into the same situation as before so I decided to save up and spend more for this kit. This video, like many others of your videos, is helping me get back into edrums and let's me get an idea of what to look for, and how to decide if I want it.
Tl:dr I just want to thank you for helping with choosing which drums to get.

I'm a keyboarder, and I tried my luck with an Octapad 80. I immediately fell in love. Since then I'm working my way up step by step. The bad thing - all the stuff I like is way beyond its expiration date. PD21/31 pads, for instance. Hard to get. Before you throw a lot of money at something - maybe go for something used AND only parts of it. Just buy some kind of pad with samples, and try it out. Just add what you like to try out step by step. A Kickdrum pedal came last for me ;)

I'm a drummer who worked in a music store for many years. I got to try a lot of electronic drums and didn't like any of them. A few years ago I got a TD-11 kit. (yes it was on sale but I had done my homework by then.) Was a great buy. A suggestion like any guitarist who buys a new Multi FX pedal. Sit down. and work at getting the kits to sound like you want them. The suggestion for not giving up on the e-drums too quickly is very valid. Another tip from someone who taught drums, If you are a startup drummer and can afford to play on an acoustic kit do so. If your neighbors are going to complain I understand but I have seen too many students get so sidetracked with the cool sounds that they don't actually learn to play properly.

I agree with you. If you are buying anything, with the way technology is now a days, do your research!! If buying drums find out as much as you can about them and go to the store and try out two or three different sets and guess what? No matter what the salesperson says you don't have to buy it that day I suggest a 2 day cooling off period on buying any instrument. I spent $2100 on a Spector bass and found out, yes it was brand new, but it was 5 years old I should have looked up the serial number before I bought it. Buyer be ware on all musical instruments

we have a company here in Canada called Long and Mcquade, they rent out E drum kits, I was on the market looking for a new kit, and I wanted to get the VAD506, but they didn't rent that kit, and buying it was way out of my price range!, but they did rent the Alesis Strike SE model, and I heard alot of mixed reviews (majority of them good), so I took the plunge, and rented that, and it was love at 1st play! it sounds really good, plays well, no trigger issues at all, solidly built, and you get quite a bit for the price. Now if it was junk right out of the box, I only rented it, not bought it, I can pack it back up, return it, and walk away...so if it's possible, I think renting them 1st is the way to go!

Thanks for the video. I made the #4 mistake. Bought a Roland td 11k and then upgraded to mesh toms, a 13 inch ride and a s 10 inch snare. I should have bought the kv and would have saved a lot of money. I'm an impulsive buyer and should have researched kits.

I always buy second hand, or as I prefer to put it, other people's _broken dreams_ and that way, if I don't like what I buy, I know I have a decent chance of offloading it for around the same money less any listing or paypal fees. In fact, I've made money in the past reselling with a better description, photos and a story behind it.
    Great video too. Thank you

Great video man! I bought my first edrum last month, it's a Medeli DD508. Great drumkit! It cost me like $850, too bad that in my country is at least the double of the actual price. It is a pity that in your country There are no Medeli's drumkit for selling. I would have loved your opinion about this Brand in particular. Cheers from Perú!

I set myself 6 month to learn, plan, think, re think, learn more & plan again.. for this coming investment that i will do when buying my first electric drum set. Your channel is a great help in the learn curve though not to the exact kit. The amount of cash for a high end kit make long time planing and maturing of the thought process important to me but may not be the right way for others. I find the need to take the time to avoid the risk of regrets later.
Regrets tend to become expensive lessons that is best to be without. I am in the middle of my 6 month ... :-)

The mistake i made was buying a used roland on ebay without asking for purchase receipts or the age of the kit. It must have been about 10 years old and the cymbals were almost worn out. Luckily I was able to repair the cymbals and i got 2 years before the kick pad died. Gotta live and learn sometimes. I’m never buying used electric drums again.

Ive got all used and very old in some cases Roland gear. Only had a cable malfunction in 2 years of 5 day a week playing. Not sure if it was even Roland. If you buy from reputable sellers and the pictures dont show obvious abuse it might still be a good deal. Otherwise get out the wallet😂

What I’m wondering is if it’s worth planning on upgrading a cheap kit over time if you’re just starting out. Although it will cost more money in the long run, it’s kinda like the kit progresses as you progress, and if you lose interest early on, you didn’t spend as much money.

I kind of like the idea of cobbling together my own kit, since I have no muscle memory for the layout and want something with good quality parts (aside from the brain) for recording more original drumming than preset ezdrummer stuff or programming MIDI by hand.. that I can just fold in two and shove on top of a cupboard out the way when I'm not using it.. the TD-11KV does look good, though.. but I'm not sure how practical folding it to shove it up out the way would be. I'd probably get the TD-4KP/TD-1KPX stand (or two!) if I could find that seperately.. Going down the research rabbit hole is half the fun, though :)

I worked one year in a music store. The Problem was more that shops have to compete with online shops. First at all, if you buy online you do not have personal consultation. Thats why it is cheeper! You want good consultation, that might need 1-2 hours incl. trying out the instruments, you have to be fair and be ready to pay more than online! I worked as a seller of the Drums (Acoustic and Electric), Percussion and P.A. . I play the drums for more than 20 Years.

I have been doing research on these drums for years and my choice would be Roland TD 30kv drums because I have broken some of the cheaper sets and they didn’t have anything close to what the Roland to 30 have well because they were cheap you get what you pay for. I play acoustic drums for the most part but love the way e drums feel and I swear I can play better on them. I always go for higher end equipment I just have to wait longer before I blow thousands of dollars on instruments but worth the wait usually.

"It's cheaper to be a guitar player." - That's an overstatement man. It all depends on what you play and what type of instrument you want. Sure, you can buy a 100$ guitar or 20k guitar. You can use built in amp effects or spend 10k on pedals etc etc.

I’m just about to jump back in. I am older now but as a younger man I was in several bands and had a TAMA 5 piece power kit with the old electric pads that came out neons ago. I always remembered the electric pads had no stick feedback and really only had 4 tracks ranging from boing boing to Ping Ping and crash crash. Very 80s. I want something that I can set up and have a range of sounds with and play with headphones over tracks. Key areas for me are feedback from the heads and obv sound and ease of use. Thanks for your review.

A mistake I made many years ago, was buying bleeding edge tech and then living with it until it became obsolete. I would recommend people buy what they can afford, maybe not the top of the line, but the next notch down and staying aware for things to upgrade the set or add features later. Don't break the bank on the first purchase, but don't buy junk either.

the salesman at thomann was awesome.
I said: Hey, i am new to drumming and interested in an e drum kit ples Halp
he just hands me a pair of sticks and headphones and said:
"There are the drums, everything is plugged in and ready to play, see you when you dont want to play anymore, if you have questions just shout"
and then i tested every kit they had multiple times and made my decision based on my hearing and playfeel, asked him what he thinks regarding quality and lifespan

Okay, I don't have time to read all of the comments here to see if this has been asked before so I'll just ask. I am totally new to drums and e-drums. I see a guy who is selling an e-set for a pretty good price but apparently he knows nothing about them either. My speculation is that the kit was left behind by a former tenant that he was renting a room to. It is a Prodigy kit but appears (from the photos I have seen) to be missing the bass drum kick pedal. My main question is, what could be wrong with this kit that I shouldn't pay $100. for? Cheers!
