A ha. Reality is the ultimate mind-bending trip with or without a Magus to guide or misguide your lack of direction or narrow-minded path into fantastical realms.
I begin my journey tomorrow. I loved 'The Game'. Before seeing this video I had used A.I. to find the perfect book for me. Typed the book title into TH-cam and found your take here. This is going to be a trip! Pink champagne on ice.
Interesting video James. I read the original version of The Magus about thirty years ago and re-read it again when the later revised version came out and it was one of my favourite books. There was a film version as well which I cannot remember much about but I don't think it was very good. Not thought about it for ages but I loved the way the reader and the protagonist kept being fooled into thinking they knew what was going on only to be conned again. Beware the Salle de Attendre.
Hey Chris! Since making this video I have reflected on it some more and are seeing other areas where it may have influence the developers of NLP. I may reread and then make a new vid!
Dang you’ve got some crazy-good cell phone coverage to be able to walk around randomly streaming like that and not lose video or audio even once; just gotta say. Loving the book so far. I’m only a few chapters in, but I can tell it’s great.
Ha! I‘ve just finished the Magus - second read after many, many years because Mike Mandel had recommended it at his workshop at the 2019 UKHC. Funny how this book goes around and comes around ... Your critique is dead on, I thought quite the same ... best regards!
I think the analogue was to ancient Greek philosophy. There is an analogy by Plato of learning and understanding being akin to a ladder. Beginning on the first rung, the neophyte or student climbs to the top, only to discover that he has to land on the first rung again but on a different level. Same thing as the first reality being overshadowed by another larger frame, and eventually ending up seeming as the first original reality frame, but altered in perception and ultimately seeming as meaningless. That was what Plato described and your analysis seems to compare to the Greek model as Plato put it. There are many esoteric and philosophical elements of the book and film. Plato also had been indoctrinated into the Mysteries and was initiated. I think The Magus is a direct reference to Secret Society initiation rites and Greek philosophy and the ancient realm of thought and esoterica that is at the fulcrum of European thought, thus framing reality.
If you liked the Magus in terms of a headtrip, I also recommend -The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami. Different almost banal style but will really take over the mind. www.amazon.co.uk/Wind-Up-Bird-Chronicle-Haruki-Murakami/dp/0099448793
Premising that I did not read the Fowler's book, again in this video what am feeling and tasting is your solid intention to build an open frame of personal development referring to NLP and hypnosis without encapsulating the paradigms. This is something that am doing on my behalf in another way and find this a deep level of resonance between your work and mine. Last but not least, that Fowley has not got a philosophy is not surprising given his cultural background. He is a smart postmodernist and postmodernism is far from being close to the NLP paradigm because of that: postmodernism lives for practicing the debunking in itself and loves admiring this practice, redundant and brilliant exposed.; NLP instead debunks what deserves this treatment, reinforces the core points and manipulates what is necessary for strenghtening the behavior and performance of people. Postmodernist lives of its image, NLP use skepticism taking care of human potential as precious essence of human being. Rather different, I mean.
Great distinctions Raffaele! After making this video I reflected on my statement that Fowles was probably lacking an underlying philosophy... I may be incorrect about that - it may just lay a little more between the lines. I am likely to reread so I’ll report back!
It does! Literally I'm meandering down Main Street. Interestingly, I made a video waling down same street yesterday (approx 1 year later) and concluded that paying attention to my surroundings whilst making video content doesn't work for me, so I'm going to re-shoot yesterday's video down on the beech front where I can sit down and get in the zone.
I hate myself for this, because this is an interesting take on the novel, but it is Magus with a hard 'g', not a soft 'j' sound. It's my issue, but it makes me twitch a little every time you say it. I'm sorry.
That’s OK... no need to hate yourself! Are you US, UK or somewhere else? I ask because am aware some people pronounce this word with a hard ‘g’ and I’ve noticed this seems more common in the US. In the UK (at least in the circles I roll) it seems more common to use the same soft ‘j’ as in the related words ‘magic’, ‘mage’ and ‘magician’.
I’m from the UK. Every reference I’ve come across, in respect of the book and the (disappointing) film based on it, as well as dictionary definitions, use the hard ‘g’ sound. The word is, of course, the singular of ‘magi’, and I’ve only ever heard ‘magi’ pronounced with the hard ‘g’, including biblical references. It’s not a big deal, though, even though I am the one who raised it!
@Stoli Blue I do believe you yes. But I think Paxo is talking about the same thing (the religious and the mystical are not mutually exclusive) AND I'm sticking with both him and me on the pronunciation. I don't think there is a 'correct' only a choice, and I'm sticking with mine as it seems a better fit to me (given the soft g in all related terms).

It’s a full on head-job for sure!

Hey Oliver... hope you are well. I have it on audiobook now and am intending to re-experience it from that perspective
I find his pronunciation of the word magus soooo annoying that I can't listen to him.

Hi im making a film based on the Magus, can you read the script and give me some suggestions feedback?

I'll check that out, Declan. Thanks!
Thanks James! Interesting, thought provoking video :)
Thank you, Stuart!
Im on my 5th read, still not sure what the heck is going on !
"Loki-esque"! LOL! Love it!
Carlos Casados I have a particular interest in modelling ‘Lokiism’ :)
Yeah, I wouldn't quite peg you as an 'Odinist'. ;-)
Have you read Richard Bandler's, The Adventures of Anybody?
Carlos Casados No I haven’t!

stop double speaking, ineffective communication
The novel is worth reading but this vid meanders.
It does! Literally I'm meandering down Main Street. how come the video image is reversed?
Nearly 2 years back... difficult to remember!
Its not 'The Majus' Its pronounced 'The Magas' Hope you dont review his other
great work 'Daniella Martina'.
No it's not lol, hes saying it correctly
I hate myself for this, because this is an interesting take on the novel, but it is Magus with a hard 'g', not a soft 'j' sound. It's my issue, but it makes me twitch a little every time you say it. I'm sorry.

@@jam-nc8ut I'm with Paxman on this one: th-cam.com/video/yCkCHtip-t0/w-d-xo.html
@Stoli Blue Yes, that's right a mystic. Good stuff for checking!

Arigatou*
MAY-GUS NOT MAJUS!
Yeah yeah. And mag-gig and mag-gician etc. :D Happy for you to stay in your camp on it and I'll stay in mine.
good old con many trying to drum up business. NLP ... the soure of the Magus?
Avoid this con man at all .... cost.
Absolutely... what he said!
(BTW I may be misunderstanding you but... I was pointing to The Magus as an influence on NLP, NOT NLP being an influence on The Magus).
