I was so excited to get my Apple IIe out for a demo that I forgot my usual disclaimers. In this video I paid for everything with my own funds nor was there any sponsorships or pre-review of content before uploading. Sorry about that! Oh but I do think my Mom or Dad bought me the Karateka game back in the 80's :).
I live in the tropics, and it blows my mind how long electronics last in cooler, drier climates, and homes with temperature controls. I opened my ps5 to clean out the dust after 6 months, and the metal grating across the fan already has corrosion all over it.
This was really cool thank you! I follow Jordan’s instagram. Saw a post about this and thought it was a video documentary. :) And how cool was that Easter egg!
That's insane he even has his earlier versions of the game. Very rare to find stuff like that about a game. Karateka is one of those games that I always saw, but to me always looked slow and clunky so I never gave it a chance. Didn't realize this release also includes an updated version which looks like it fixes it enough I might actually have to give this game a try now.
Yeah the updated version plays a heck of a lot better. What's crazy is how fast you can play through the game once you get a handle on the overall strategy. I was able to finish both the original and refreshed versions in maybe 10-15 minutes. Learning the game as a kid took a lot longer!
Regardless of how Jordan might say it, your childhood pronunciation (Kah-rah-teh-kah) is *definitely* closer to how it should sound in Japanese! 😅 Fun vid!!
Quick now put it in on the other side. You'll be playing karataka... upside down. Jason Scott did a talk about this awhile back when discussing the prince of persia source code.

That’s really cool that the disk and the disk drive still work! Along with the Apple IIe itself!
I loved this game when I was a kid and would play for hours at a time on my Apple IIc
Thank you for this Lon! I didn't know this existed until now! I loved Karateka for the C64!
Karateka! Love it Lon. Thanks too for your spacex coverage earlier today

Amazing quality. Incredible engineering! Lots of detail.
WOW memories. This is one of the first games that I ever "beat." Much nostalgia for my Commodore 64.
I forgot how big the Apple iie was. I don't think I ever played any games on it just search for books in the library.
I remember playing this game on an Apple II at school. Some kid bought in his copy and we could play if we finished are assignments early.
Nice to see you on NSF, keep up the good work Lon

Wow, way back machine here, I remember playing this, pretty sure it was the Apple IIe version. It was either at the library or at a friends house.
