- The Biligirirangana Hills, commonly called BR Hills, is a hill range situated in south-eastern Karnataka, at its border with Tamil Nadu (Erode District) in South India. The area is called Biligiriranganatha Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary or simply BRT Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a protected reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Being at the starting point of the Eastern Ghats and very close to Western Ghats, the sanctuary is home to eco-systems that are unique to both the mountain ranges. The site was declared a tiger reserve in January 2011 by the Karnataka government, a few months after approval from India's National Tiger Conservation Authority

he hills are located at the north-west of the Western Ghats and the westernmost edge of the Eastern Ghats. Thus this area supports a diverse flora and fauna in view of the various habitat types present. A wildlife sanctuary of 322.4 square kilometres (124.5 sq mi) was created around the temple on 27 June 1974, and enlarged to 539.52 square kilometres (208.31 sq mi) on 14 January 1987. The sanctuary derives its name Biligiri (white hill in Kannada) from the white rock face that constitutes the major hill crowned with the temple of Lord Ranganathaswamy (Lord Vishnu) or from the white mist and the silver clouds that cover these hills for a greater part of the year. An annual festival of Lord Vishnu, held in the month of April, draws pilgrims from far and wide. Once in two years, the Soliga Tribals present a 1-foot and 9 inches slipper, made of skin, to the deity in Biligiriranga Hills.
The hills are in the Yelandur, Kollegal and Chamarajanagar talukas of Chamarajanagar District of Karnataka. They are contiguous with hills in Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary in Erode District of Tamil Nadu to the south. By road, they are about 90 kilometres (56 mi) from Mysore and 160 kilometres (99 mi) from Bangalore. The road leading to the village on top of the hills may be approached either from Yelandur or Chamarajanagar. Kyathadevara Gudi or K Gudi is located close to BR Hills, where safari is conducted.
Climate and vegetation:
The sanctuary, ~35 km long north-south and ~15 km wide east-west, is spread over an area of 540 km2 with a wide variation in mean temperature (9 °C to 16 °C minimum and 20 °C to 38 °C maximum) and annual rainfall (600 mm at the base and 3000 mm at the top of the hills) The hill ranges, within the sanctuary raise as high as 1200 m above the basal plateau of 600 m and run north-south in two ridges. The wide range of climatic conditions along with the altitude variations within the small area of the sanctuary have translated it into a highly heterogeneous mosaic of habitats such that we find almost all major forest vegetation types - scrub, deciduous, riparian, evergreen, sholas and grasslands.

Allowed tourists to visit from 6 am to 6 pm. This may be considering the revenue to the temple. But early morning travel into the tiger reserve is not advisable because these predators will be prey on at early mornings.

Did you come from the Mysuru side or Bengaluru to BR Hills ?
Tiger or a Leopard in this video would have been a Prized catch.
We went on 6th March 2021 and everything is dry now and the trees have become leafless, no wild animals seen also, except for the monkeys and the 2 donkeys also seen in this video.
The waterholes and the lake are also 1/4th of what you have shot in this video. I was frustrated to the core.
Biligiri Rangana Betta just resembled the outskirts of the Banneraghatta National park near Bengaluru, in March maybe due to the severe Summer Sun and we saw only the dry woods.

We shot this video on 30th august. August to January is the best time to visit BR Hills as well as K Gudi wilderness camp.And we went via Mysore Yelandur rout which is the perfect way to reach BR Hills.
And we have to go early in the morning so that we can see the animals in that time easily.(at 6:00 AM should reach the gate).
Bike or car both are okay. We should be very cautious when animals sighted, they might attack us if we misbehave.

Yes, we had gone with lots of hope over there and all we saw were the dried barks of trees and fallen leaves, the so called "Tiger Reserve" is now hosting 6 to 8 JCB machines and quarrying is going on actively. I don't know what kind of a Forest Department we have these days.
The Temple in the yellow Gopuram was under renovation and the idols were clothed and put outside.
I was expecting to see a Ranganathaswamy Temple, but we just saw a Venkateshwara swamy type of God with a Goddess Ranganayaki beside him. Later on after I checked out in the internet, it has been mentioned that this is the only place in India where Lord Ranganathaswamy is standing up and not sleeping.
Next, we went to see the Madhyaranga in Bluff and there also the Kaveri river has dried up. Here also, there was Temple renovation so they have kept the main idols of Ranganathaswamy and Goddess Ranganayaki outside near the main entrance and here also we were let down.
Next we went to Bhara Chukki falls, only two tiny streams of water were there, No idea how much Electricity they will generate from that.
After that we went to Shivanasamudra Temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi Devi, here it was great.
Next we went to Kabbaalamma Temple and it was in very good condition.
Looking at the Forests in Karnataka, I was deeply disappointed and shattered to say the least. Next time as you have said, we will try to go in the season of August and September, hopefully our Supplementary Exam visits can help us to pass the exam at least next time around. We failed miserably in the March to April exams at the Biligiri Rangana Betta this time.

Yes sir. You can go by car also. It will be open from morning 6 to evening 7 only. You have go early and come back within 7 pm sir. If you wish to stay there. You can take the rooms for rent near BR Hills temple or you can stay in the K Gudi jungle resort also sir. And please let us know your experience when you visit there 😊
