  • “BUT NOT FOR ME ” is by George Gershwin, and is one of the most fun songs to play! This arrangement is by Carl Strommen and is from his book “Gershwin by Special Arrangement” (pub. Alfred Publishing, 2001). The first time through, I’m playing with the cd that comes with the book, and the tempo is quarter note = 158. The practice version follows with the metronome set to quarter note = 80. The metronome will click on every beat (1 2 3 4).
This piece is much easier when you utilize some alternate positions. Here’s what I used-
Measures 2,4,6,8,18,20,22,24,36,66- In each of these measures, the first F is in 1st and the second F is in 6th.*
    Measure 23- The F is in 6th.
Measures 34,35,44- In each of these measures, the Bb is in 5th.
Measures 38,46,49- In each of these measures, the D is in 4th.
Measures 41 and 56- In each of these measures, the First Bb is in 1st and the second Bb is in 5th.
Measure 45- The D and the F are in 4th (The D is a slightly flat 4th and the F is a slightly sharp 4th, so move the slide up through these two notes and finish in 3rd for the Eb).
Measures 47,51,54,55,64- In each of these measures, the F is in 4th.
Measure 48- The first F is in 4th and the second F is in 1st.
*In these measures, the notes are F-G-F-G. Why did I choose F1-G4-F6-G4 instead of keeping both F notes in the same position?
    • F1-G4-F1-G4 forces the player to use slightly faster air for each G and slightly slower air for each F. If the airspeed doesn’t speed up for the G, the player might accidentally play a lower D4. If the airspeed doesn’t slow down for the F, the player might accidentally play a higher Bb1.
    • F6-G4-F6-G4 starts in 6th position which is considerably harder that starting in 1st.
    • F1-G4-F6-G4 lets the player start in 1st, speed up the air a bit to play the G4 and then stay with that air speed to smoothly hit the F6 and return to the G4.
As always, explore different position choices on your own and see what works best for you!!!

you got the melody perfectly. It's a very sinuous one and was having difficulties understanding it, but I have a feeling that the trombone is a great instrument for sorting that out.
    Thank you very much!
