Milton Tire Inflator "Customizing" (The dumbest project on the channel... so far!)

  • Point in shame and give me your best "HA! HA!" impression as we explore one of the most poorly thought out and executed projects on the channel.
    To be less hard on myself, I wanted to change a bunch of things about an otherwise very nice Milton tire inflator setup and it just all went against me and I didn't know when to say "when". Story of my life...

      Thanks a lot! Those are the kind I like to make, so it works out well for both of us. 😅

    I have never seen a better struggle. Very entertaining

    My old HF inflator had a crack/leak in rubber hose to lock on chuck. Couldn't find a replacement hose with dual straight type chuck. Ordered Spurtar Inflator Gauge Tool from Amazon, has quick connect to compressor hose ( no long rubber hose). Has dual straight type non-locking chuck. I flounder around with fittings and adapters, metric vs standard threads, and allen wrenches, etc. Hope Spurtar spurts properly with no leaks.

      I once had one of those HFT inflators and I was never happy with it. That's why I went with something name brand, and a good bit better quality, when I went this way. Prices on them have gone insane in the years since I bought mine though. I'm not sure I'd do it again in today's money. 😅

    The only way you ever get success is to try new things. Most of the time, it doesn't work out. No big deal. Money spent, lesson learned.

      Indeed. In the long run, it's all going to work out fine. That thing will probably serve me for the rest of my days and I already don't remember the time or money I wasted chasing after it.

    This is an interesting project and it shows what a pain it is to work with air connections. But, when you ordered the original Milton inflator, did you know that it was also available ion 3' and 6' lengths?

      I did, but at the time this one was actually less expensive than the shorter options and I knew I wanted a hose whip on the other side of it anyhow. So... I thought I was a hose barb or two and a couple of clamps away from where I wanted to go. I was clearly mistaken!
      What really put the nail in the coffin was the decision to abandon the original Milton air chuck after discovering the fitting wasn't NPT. I probably should have just adapted those threads to NPT, but I didn't (and don't) actually know what they are and I didn't want to buy $50 of fittings trying to figure it out. I thought at the end of it I'd still be able to use the Milton chuck on its own so it was worth the effort to have it around too. Another mistake...
      This was all just dumb from start to finish, but I couldn't see it until I was in it too deep to do anything about it. It made for an entertaining video at least, I think...

    Watched, Shook my head, Laughed. I was wondering why you didn't just cut the 10 ft. hose and spliced it in at a shorter length in the beginning

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You took all of the appropriate actions!
      Edit: That was the original plan, but the "unique" fittings on each end messed that up since I couldn't use the longer air chuck, and then each step I took further down that path just made it worse. I should have just sent it back, but the time for that was 25 months ago. Oh well... The end result ended up being (IMHO) a fairly entertaining video and a tool that pretty much does what I wanted... Just way more money and effort than it was worth.

    Don't throw away the ends you cut off,cut the ferrule off and reuse the fitting instead of buying more barbed fittings or adapters

      I can't remember what I did, but I think it ended up where I used everything..?

    Typically Milton uses UNF threads for the air output side of the inflator

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That very well may be the case. 👍

    5:25 I prefer you keep the stuff that didn't quite work out in the video. Let's people see what snags you are likely to hit when you go into what seems like a simple fix/upgrade.

      Funny enough, I recorded that part of the video maybe one or two days before you made a comment to me that you like seeing my thought process through this stuff... It was as if you were watching over my shoulder.
      Are you..? haha

    Why do you like the hose whip in the inflator?

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I can read the gauge more easily than if it were down at the valve stem. It could also be helpful for inflating dual tires.

    • @kennya1425
      @kennya1425 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBrokenLife I mean the swivel whip extension at the inflator handle.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kennya1425 So it's self contained and so it's physically larger so I'm less likely to lose it. I misplace air chucks constantly so I try to put them all on whips so I don't.
