    Thank you! Finally there’s someone who visited the Philippines that is sensitive about what the local citizen’s wages. Most foreign people who visit the Philippines whether to feature tourist destinations, food, or anything in the country always say that “PHILIPPINES IS SUPER CHEAP!”. However, they forgot to account that they are earning first world country wages and the Philippines is a third world country.
    For the average Filipino, a quality skin care product is definitely more of a luxury since the cheap products. Imagine a good Sunscreen will cost around 300-500 pesos when our minimum wage earners only earns 600 pesos a day in Manila.
    Thank you for being considerate. I started watching your channel way back in 2020 and I did not regret supporting it.

    I really appreciate you taking local wages and the economy into account when talking about the price point. A lot of westerners look at how much they’re spending with their money thinking our country is some sort of cheap-easy to live in paradise. And it is very beautiful I love my country, but people for the most part are indeed struggling with extreme poverty, wages are super super low, exploitation is common, and a lot do decide to leave our islands to work in more developed countries so we can send money back. And these boogie places cover that fact up on the surface for the most part.

    OMG!!! I never thought you and Jan Angelo will get to finally meet in person!
    And yes, you're right, good quality skin care here in the Philippines are pricey. That 500 pesos sunscreen is almost the cost of a day's minimum wage (645 pesos). That's why Jan Angelo's videos are very helpful. Not only does he scouts for the best skin care, he also looks for the best prices. He even made videos of the same skin care product with different price ranges to help us out in choosing the best price for our budget.
    I hope you could come back to the Philippines and enjoy more food, places and most of all, the people!

    Heyyyy Filipina here! Lemme explain why skin whitening is so rampant. Sooo Filipinos naturally have brown skin. But having a fairer skin is somewhat associated to your status in life. Meaning, the fairer you are, the less likely you had to go outside to "work". That is being compared to farmers so are out all day in the sun, working, hence, their darker skin color. I personally has never tried and attempted to whiten my complexion. I am soooo proud of my light brown complexion and I do wish more Filipino will feel the same. I think nowadays more and more Filipinos are embracing their natural skin tone

      I've heard this, I find it so interesting. In Australia, a tan is associated with being on holiday, being at the beach a lot, it's still seen as a good thing even though it's not. Most Australians would do anything to have a filipino complexion! I'm glad you love yours, you guys have beautiful skin.

    • @FragranceEuphoria
      @FragranceEuphoria 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

      It's so interesting to me that fair skin is the beauty standard there. I'm pasty white and I hate it. I wish I had deep brown skin. I think deep brown skin is so beautiful. I'd tan myself that color if it wasn't cultural appropriation. I would never want to offend or cultural appropriate so that's why I wouldn't do it. But if there was a way I could do it respectively I would.

    • @Danica.Powell
      @Danica.Powell 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @FragranceEuphoria Brown skin just is beautiful, no way around it. I'm pretty fair, I would rather be tanned as well but I'm not going to damage my skin for it and I don't like fake tan. But its so interesting to me as well that being pale is seen as such a good thing, its not really in Western culture.

    • @hellheyla18
      @hellheyla18 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      @Danica.Powell I think the 1st time that I had an awareness of how white/western people wanted to have brown skin so bad is when my relatives from the US had a vacation in the Philippines and sunbathe soooo bad so they can have the deepest tan as possible before going back to US. Mind you, they are Filipinos who have deeper complexion than me 😅

    • @hellheyla18
      @hellheyla18 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @FragranceEuphoria thank you! I would want a deeper tan if I can but also scared of skin cancer so is also very diligent with my sunscreen when I'm at the beach hence the lack of opportunity to have a tan haha

    Majority of the people here buy skincare online since smaller brands can’t afford to have their products available in physical stores. Malls only carry the really big brands.

    Standalone skincare stores are not really a thing in the Philippines. I think because of the economics of it all, even affordable brands are expensive in the context of wages. I mean imagine how high you would have to price your products if you had a standalone store. I feel that is why you can find a large price range in the drugstores and grocery stores while the really expensive brands just have online stores.

    VMV cleanser is actually nice, it doesn't strip off much of the natural oils in your face, so it's not drying and very beneficial in the long run, a brand that is heavily backed up by science in their formulations, a niche brand and on the higher price point actually. I use the variant for combination skin.

I met my husband and he made feel confident with my skin color and now that I am here I never get any bad comments about my skin color. I really hope more Filipinos who are bullied for their skin color learn to love their color without feeling the need to bleach it. ❤❤❤ thanks Hyram for the video I miss Philippines!!

    you’re right for highlighting the inaccessibility of high quality skincare products to the average citizen. whenever i get asked, i always say to prioritize sunscreen, but it’s not been easy to recommend sunscreens with high spf given the price tag of the really good ones are too much for their budget. here’s hoping that more quality and accessible brands will make their way into the market soon.

    Hmm, I think Filipinos in general have other things to prioritize besides investing in health and beauty. Many are already contented with cheap products that does the basics. You are indeed correct when you've noticed that Filipinos are obsessed with whitening products. This stems from a deeply rooted ideology that having fair skin is a standard of beauty. Given the limited skincare information in the Philippines, local skincare brands make their prices very affordable to make products accessible to the masses-especially those in the lower to middle classes

    Hyram! when was you here???!! Filipina here! I agree about the skin lightener stuff more prevalent here than any actual skincare. Ironically, it has more market and readily available than that of sunscreens!! I remember trying to find a lightweight everyday facial sunscreen only to see a bunch of western thick and sticky sunblock-which was it was used to be called- in the stores. So so sad, and if you want a decent sunscreen for the body, your only choice are those skin lightening ones with an atleast spf30 if you are lucky. Its like we really have no choice?! But now, I am so happy that the Filipino market has its own number of sunscreens locally made and brands with a fairly reasonable price but still effective being offered to us now. I still think the skincare and makeup industry here is at its infancy and just starting to boom. Still much a long way to go, truly exciting!♥♥

    Fantastic video! I’m a Filipina residing in the US for over 20 years! I never had skincare growing up in the Philippines even if my family’s above the middle class status because it wasn’t considered a necessity. Shampoo, soap and deodorant were all that was needed in our home. When I was in my first year of college back home, I was given a Papaya soap and a Black soap by a friend, which dried out my skin, but definitely did some brightening. Never used them since. Living and working in the US absolutely made skincare more accessible and affordable to me, especially Korean skincare! I realize skincare is part of self-love and self-care! To speak for what is on his/her mind, to talk back and not just say yes! And to accept him or herself fully, not waiting for outside validation but within her. I wish a lot of people from PH will choose themselves more and explore the world, and not just stick to the norm of being the same but to be unique yet be okay with being brown and being Pinoy! Skin tone was more of a reflection of status (wealthy people didn't work outside, do hard labor in the fields, etc.) rather than a factor of "colonizers."

      LOUDER!!! People here keep saying "it's about colonialism". It's always a common misconception about the Filipinos obsession of light skin tied to colonialism that was being brought by the Spaniards which is COMPLETELY WRONG.
      Having a light skin beauty standard already existed before the Spanish arrival. During the pre-colonial era where higher class people during that time are often depicted in medieval paintings as having a light skin which means they have the opportunity to stay indoors and not work outside unlike the lower class and slaves. This not only exist in the pre-colonial Philippines but the entirety of Asia during that time. And kept going on and on through generations.

    luxe organix has a good tinted sunscreen too! i use it as a makeup base (it’s a bit heavy but doesn’t feel greasy)
    it has color adapting technology which i really like (it’s the pink variant)
    the other variant is a whitening one 💀💀

    i rlly appreciate hyram’s insight especially the observation about the wages in the philippines. in reality, skincare is kind of considered a “luxury” for some because its not rlly a normalized thing compared to other countries, and with the wages, skincare is kind of like an optional thing and not rlly a necessity, only after the pandemic did people rlly focus on skincare and we did see some brands try to be affordable, but even then, for normal filipino, even a poor/mediocre skincare is kind of pricy
    nevertheless, thank you hyram for sharing observations! one of the best skincare gurus out there!

    One brand I highly recommend for both efficacy and affordability is +ful. They don't have an onsite store, but they do have online stores in both Shopee and Lazada. Their products range within 250-500 PHP, and that's the most affordable brand where one can find the essentials: niacinamide, retinol, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and ceramide. They also take some time to finish too. I have been using this for some time since I was a uni student. Their products really do the job.

    A lot of the good local skincare products that doesn't care for skin bleaching are only found online, like klued, soul apothecary, dermorepubliq, etc.

    You’re correct with the wages I myself wants to buy products in the US because it’s much cheaper than buying it here in the Philippines. The only problem is the shipping fee it’s pricy too so it’s the same thing. But, on other hand we have Luxxe Organics which has good products and lower price point. There products does not disappoint! ❤

    I love Hyram so much for taking Filipinos' wages into account rather than straight into the "so cheap!" commentary. Would not hate him for saying that products in the Philippines are cheap, but I really, really appreciate him for doing so.
