@@WaywardVet I wouldn’t call Maui fat in Moana, but I could understand that. I don’t know anything about their culture or mythology so I really don’t have an informed opinion on anything

Maui is the polyponiasen version of Loki. He's a bit of a trickster demigod though most of the time he's known for doing things like stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans. I highly recommend you take advantage of the babysitting time and watch Moana.
The strange commonalities between ancient cultures fascinates me. European mythology has Prometheus, Polynesian has Maui, both of whom stole fire from the gods for humanity.
I loved your reaction when you noticed he was going to steal the boat. Its exactly what he’s trying to do. Pull you in with a catchy song and then catch you off guard. I remember my first time I immediately caught that he changed to “it’s your day to say you’re welcome” and was like wait what?
Fun fact Lin Manuel Maranda actually wrote this song with Dwayne in mind because he felt that if anyone could make a self centered song sound cool it would be The Rock.
Another vote for "Shiny" -- it's SO much fun! It's written by Lin Manuel Miranda, like all the other Moana music, and performed by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, lots of other stuff). And yes, you should watch the movie! On your own time or with your niece -- 2-year-olds love musical movies, whether or not they grasp the plot (though like with other Disney fare, there are some scary scenes she might want a comforting lap for). TBH, most of the modern Pixar and Disney stuff, from say Ratatouille on, is just really good emotional storytelling, well-made to be enjoyed on multiple levels -- an adult doesn't need to have a kid in the room to enjoy Inside Out, Big Hero 6, Wall-E, Zootopia, etc.
Maui has strong Thor and Loki fusion vibes to me. He's got all the easygoing, fun loving, charismatic ego of Thor, and all the trickster goodness from Loki. He gets her so wrapped up in his performance she doesn't even realize what's actually happening around her until he locks her up in a cave bible style.
He is definitely a trickster god, tricking other gods for the benefit of humans, like Prometheus, Raven, Crow and Coyote, Papa Legba/Eshu, Hermes and others. I love the archetype.
1: you should definitely learn a little about Maui, he is a rather interesting demigod compared to most versions of deities. 2: next up from this movie would probably be Shiny, another great song, and a villain one. But make sure to then watch the after credits followup to the scene the song is from, or at least make sure to watch that when you see the movie
Just curious. Did you miss or ignore the line within the first 30s of the song where he mentioned he was a demigod and just went with spirit out of nowhere lol? Also, demiguy was clearly a pun lol
I've seen short video of the Rock singing this slong with Maui to his little daughter to show her "that's daddy" but she still didn't belived him in totally adorable way eventhou obvioudly voice matched and allxD
*DemiGOD. And Dwayne Johnson has always been able to sing and play the ukulele. He has a soft calming voice. I've known for a while he can sing. He also nailed this song in one take.
Māui is a demi-god, not just in Hawaiian mythology but all Polynesia. I live on one of the islands that Māui fished up, Te Ika-a-Māui. My favourite song from Moana is "We Know the Way", it's in Samoan, Tokelauan, and English.
Apparently Dwayne started singing along to the song when his daughter was watching, and she asked him to stop. (even though its him singing in the movie. xD) Moana is an amazing movie. Maui is a trickster demigod in Polynesian culture who did a lot of things for humans. And in the movie, Moana is charged with finding him and making him return something he stole so she can save the world. You should really watch the movie. =) My favorite songs from this movie are "You're Welcome" and "I Am Moana (song of the ancestors)". Really, Moana is among my favorite modern disney movies today.
Fun tidbit about Maui's tattoos. It is a clever animation skill that combines 2D drawings of Mini-Maui (tattoo) with the 3D surface of Maui's skin. Also, it is an old tradition that tattoos aren't only art but a source of pride and accomplishment. Thus, Maui has his great feats, and stuff he's done is tattooed on him. "The tapestry here on my skin is the map of the victories I win." As the song says.
It's a lot like Robin Williams playing Genie. They don't sing as well in a traditional way with vocal mastery and whatnot like they do in classical concerts. However their songs are great because of the personality they can apply while singing it. Friend Like Me and Prince Ali are iconic because of Robin's chaotic impressions and deliveries. You're welcome is iconic because of The Rock's fun and gentle but booming tone. Also I think it's a plus that they seemed like they were having fun while singing those songs and it shines through. :)
At 4:05, he says "demi-guy" in order to finish the rhyme "You're welcome for the tides, the sun, the sky. Hey, it's okay, it's okay, you're welcome. I'm just an ordinary demi-guy." Maui is a demigod, he's the reason she's on her trip, and he needs to help her a little in order to complete her mission.
The Rock also sang a parody of "what a wonderful world" in the movie Journey 2: The mysterious Island. Really good as well!! It was from 2012. It's a different feel from this song much slower and softer definitely worth a listen!
Check out the full movie, it's a lot of fun. As far as Maui, he's a trickster demigod prominent in the whole polynesian settled part of the pacific - The story of how he pulled an island up from the bottom of the sea is recounted as the origin story of Hawaii in Hawaii and of New Zealand in New Zealand.
You should absolutely watch this movie. The songs have a lot of spoilers so I don't know if you'd want to react to them first, but the movie is great and Maui is a very fun character.
I really appreciate the fact that during the reaction you discussed both the song as a piece music AND the story and what you think is going on in it. A lot of the reactors - that actually do any reacting - only focus on the music, but share no thoughts about the story the song is telling, So yeah, thanks for a reaction
I'd also love to suggest a reaction video to my fave song "We Know The Way", since I'm absolutely loving the way you get caught up in your Hamilton vids. But I'm torn because the scene is kinda better in the context of the movie; I've been disappointed by other reactors who missed the early buildup of the music (in a song that's already too short) because they were too busy saying 'what's going on??' So I don't know what the best approach would be for you. I sometimes think the easiest way to do reactions to musical movies like this might be to simply watch the whole movie in one sitting, filming the entire reaction (but maybe only 'reacting for the audience' in the usual way during the songs?), so you get both the full context AND the first-time unspoiled experience. Then you could choose your own favorite way to edit the reaction down into single-song TH-cam videos, or whatever. But what do I know? 😄Do what you do best, I'm just really enjoying your channel!

I'd explain to you Maui's deal... but I don't want to spoil anything in case you decide to watch the film. It's a good one. I will tell you this: he might be slightly crazy... because he's been stuck on that island a LONG time.
He said close to the start that hes a demigod lmaoo
Bgs, I know you've done some Greek mythology, as well as history. Have you looked into other myths and legends as well? For instance, Hawaiian mythology, which Maui is pulled from, is fascinating.
Yeah I love Polynesian mythology. I was born in New Zealand and besides from learning how to speak Māori, we learnt the legends.
@@MisterMuffinut Polynesian, thank you! I swear, I have a book of Polynesian mythology up on my shelf, but I'm ashamed to say I completely blanked on that word.
I'd love to see your reaction to Moana, but it could be a fun movie to watch with your niece too, if you do want to watch it on your own time.
he said after 24 second or something when you staring at a demigod and after that he said demiguy
The rock has a daughter and when I was watching it with her he began to sing during his song. But his daughter stopped him because she said he was ruining the movie.
He sang a little bit in The Game Plan. You should watch it,if you haven't seen it. Maybe even react to it.
If you think the rock can sign here you should check out his song with tech 9 if you haven't heard it yet it's called faceoff
Is that the pride and power song? I know the hook if it is haha
@@YoBGS yes it is the whole song is awesome
You should watch the full movie Moana
You should also do "Know Who You Are" if you haven't already.
Maui. Loki. Both trickster gods.
Maui is a demigod and it wasn’t a cameo in Moana he was a main character
He isplaying a demi god from polynesian mythology
You should genuinely watch this film
I'd love to see you react to Jonathan Young's cover of Shiny
I love this movie and I don’t have kids! 😂
Thought for a second this was the heathers song
Voiceplay does a medley from Moana i would recommend checking out
How did you make it this long without hearing that song? Have you zero nieces, nephews, children of your own, and managed to avoid ANY place children are? If so TEACH ME your secret!
Also, a cave, THANKS I was trying forever to remember where I left the heroin[e].
I have a niece who is now 1, and because she lives a few hundred miles away I haven't seen much. No kids of my own and being an adult male, it would be odd for me to be places kids are since I have none of my own lol. It made for a solid way for this to go under my radar
@@YoBGS Hospital TVs, Walmart electronics department TVs, urgent care clinic TVs, I have a 2yr old niece, walked into the living room an hour ago, yep you guessed it, it was on that one as well, I think I even heard it once in a grocery store. You lucky man.
I don't know if you knew this or not
But Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the songs for this movie
And he sings one of them
After the song reactions u should watch the movie! It's my favorite disney movie :)
He first said demi-god then said demi-guy
go watch the video of him singing in the booth
Ah right on time. I was just listening to Moana songs. You should check on Shiny next it is absolutely amazing. Also maybe go back to your dream smp roots, tommyinnit uploaded a new try not to laugh video on his vlog channel.
I think he said "demi guy"
Demi god!!!
shiny
Maui isn't named after the mountain
Maui is a Demigod…
could you reacts to Face Off. It a song from 3 rappeur and the Rock rap in it to.
sorry my first language is franch so sorry for the mistakes.
This is a good example of why I always say you dont need to be a good singer to sing well the most important is bringing emotion to it
"Can the rock sing" if you ever watched wrestling you would know the answer is yes. Hell look up his sang to Vickie Guerrero its on TH-cam. Its accoully pretty funny since the whole song his just one big troll.
why does it bother me that u paused and restarted right at the part where he says he is a Demi-God then missed it and continued to ask what he was
No I heard it, it's just it sounded like "Guy" in my brain
If you notice you can’t understand something being said put subtitles because it was repeated various times that Maui is a Demi-god. Second option do some research instead of going in blind with no context whatsoever of the video your watching. Otherwise its just frustrating to watch.
Can you pls react to Joey graffecas. songs
First
Bravo!
Is he a dimi god
Day 26 of asking you to react to halfy and winks empty pages
Dwayne Johnson is not a bad singer
Rip
Although I understand why they wrote it (Lin-Manuel Miranda and Apetaia Foua'i) even though Shiny features Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) in a perfect role, Other than Maui getting his fishhook back, I think it was a wasted 10 minutes.
You don't know his story do you??
Why are people so mad about the demigod? Jesus calm doen guys. Not everyone knows different culture and lore. And sometimes u miss stuff while watching a movie.
So stop being dramatic

YOU ARE WRONG 1:56 and why don't you JUST WATCH THE MOVIE MOANA
