i do think the chess matters. if you can throw three pieces at a king you’re pretty much guaranteed to win, and having ultimates is a massive advantage (and assists a smaller but significant one). a person of roughly equal fighting game skill will get crushed if they are a worse chess player, i really believe that. with that being said, it’s not standard chess, you need to evaluate the new mechanics and standard chess theory doesn’t apply, but it’s a similar strategy game.
yes, if you neutralize the only other variable, the chess does end up mattering

The chess certainly "matters" but what we're talking about is the fact that it matters a lot less than the fighting game aspect.
A better analysis is if a grandmaster chess player who is trash at fighting games can beat an EVO champion who's never played chess.
And the answer is no. The grandmaster will never win. It'll never be close.

The taking piece should instantly deal a sizable chunk of damage to the opponent before the fight starts
This would be a step in the right direction, the game needs to find ways to be less stacked against "good at chess, bad at fighting games" players
should split the hp from 5 bars to 10, capturing a piece deals 100 damage (1 bar)
@@Qyubij Split it to 10, capturing a piece should actually deal half HP imo.
If you think about it, there's a very convenient built-in "Chess Guilty Gear" slider. Cause regular chess is basically the capturing piece deals 100% damage right away. So if we want a 50/50 chess-guilty gear then a 50% hp damage dealt would be a good start

I feel like if chess was more important and attacking pieces couldn't be taken out of the game or loose HP upon a loss, the competitive scene could be really fun, with players that are really good in chess but kinda iffy on the fighting game side being able to use some cheezy techniques with assists to dent ennemy pieces' HP little by little..
and the fighting game gods that suck at chess be like running it down with a knight as quickly as possible to avoid weird chess shenanigans..

Only the person that initiate the capture battle is the only one that have ultimates. There can't be two sides that have ultimates.
Example: at 16:17, the opponent attacks with their king, and their king only gets the ultimates.
That’s such a good strat you’ve been using where you back away from the opponent until they’re out of range and then use all your assists and meters, I wonder why all of the other people don’t do that

I feel like the chess might even be more important than the fighting because you can brute force a king down with multiple units but like, board awareness and above all else, pawn usage seems crazy in this. It seems like you can take plays that in chess might seem disadvantageous but if its for the sake of better manipulating the pawns all the better. Game seems neat.
I agree and may I also add.
When something requires just a little bit of thought to it, instead of understanding there is depth to it they just Blame the thing they do not understand. It's like bumping into a chair and then kicking it because obviously it's the chair fault for being in your way somehow.
I disagree, I'm a decent chess player but I don't think I take a bar vs an above average Fighting game player. It's not crazy at all to think a good player could beat me 1000 to 390 consistently, so now I need basically 5 checkmates vs my opponent to win??? Lol
Conversely, as long as he isn't inting into to pawns he can literally never blunder
What people don’t understand is you shouldn’t move pawns too far to the front. Units with pawns as Defense are always at least a trade. If you lose, your pawn takes. If you win you lose nothing.
@@GEM4sta If your opponent is 5 times better than you at the fighting then they should be higher elo than you, I think the balancing seems fine.
It does seem that as both players get better at the fighting the importance of the chess gets higher and higher, but if the fighting is low level then the chess doesn't really make a huge impact.... Then again pm me kpop is probably slightly better than NL at the fighting and NL was still winning the games.
@@decoy8198 I don't think '5 times better' is really how a fighting game work, and also it only needs to be 3 times better for 1 bar.
Anyway, I'm just saying I could give a lot of these people queen odds and that will account for nothing in this game. When purposely hanging pieces is good strategy you're not really playing chess.

Honestly curious what you think it's lacking. It's got artistic visuals, solid FG mechanics, chess knowledge matters, mechanics to counter turtling, rewards positioning correctly, and is available at an affordable price. Do you need it to read the temp of your steak or something?

The fighting mechanics aren't very tight, the chess mechanics matter very little if you can cheese the fights; the art is okay not great not bad just fine. I have full right to admonish a game that looks a little half baked in execution if you like it then fine I won't admonish that. I even said it doesn't seem that good in a very respectful and measured way. I don't need to explain every thought to a contrarian who doesn't really care anyways you are just looking for a way to tear my ideas apart; why impart ammunition to the cold unfeeling void.

Aah, it's a tactical fighting game based on chess, but it has very little to do with actual chess, I get it now. It's a way different game, you don't always want play it like you would play actual chess

Game seems pretty fun, but I think taking out some core chess mechanics like illegal moves on Check really keep me from getting it since it's 95% fighting and 5% strategy at this point. I'd rather play a more mainstream fighting game...

I don't know how the dev intends to design this game but I would buff the chess aspect to have it be more 50/50 but not in a traditional aspect as that would probably be too strong as the fighting needs to be significantly strong too. The way I'd consider that with small changes would be to promote more tactical play to be rewarded one way or another - which currently mostly is just better pawn usage. There needs to be something like a variant to make tactical play rewarded more such that chess calculation skill by itself can fully win a game similar to essentially fighting game skill can now with just forcing scholar mate like plays.
Perhaps buff the usage of pawns so they can be used more tactically for a free capture / fork - lots of things can be considered here to buff them for more "chess" skill. Perhaps have the center of the board offer buffs for pieces there - which it kinda does already but we could increase this. If we want chess to be about as strong as the fighting is currently we would need a lot though. Basically we'd need that to be another winning objective by itself compared to how the fighting game aspect is currently. For that, I'd also suggest perhaps making the board bigger with more pieces and pawns and have the game be the variant King of the Hill. These changes would drastically reward chess skill more without changing the game much while keeping fighting game skills to be very strong in the game. This allows chess skills to win by itself if the king can get to the center of the board. I don't think King of the Hill would be great as the game is currently given the king isn't controlled via check in a smaller board.
these types of games are just inherently bad, the chess is redundant so the gameplay is stale
@@BC-yl3qb I don't think the game is bad but if the intention is to have a chess fighting game where both are balanced I think they should buff the chess more. The game delivers on what it promises to anyone willing to purchase it either way.
For games between people of equal fighting game skill, I do think this game basically comes down to who's better at chess, and vice versa. So in that sense, it does seem fairly balanced. That said, one avenue for rebalancing could be having the first-to-move after a fight be the one who lost, rather than the one who defended
I think if they intended to make a game like chess boxing they did a really good job. In chess boxing if you're significantly worse than the other person in chess or boxing you really aren't going to stand a chance. It's usually not the best boxer or chess player who wins, it's the competitor with no clear weakness in either game.
@@64MilestotheGallon I personally wouldn't nerf the fighting but rather buff the chess to be as impactful in skill expression. It's currently not even close especially given a significant portion of the chess driven advantages only buff your skill expression in fighting, making it literally secondary.

I was very curious of what would happen at 5:40, from the moment the fight started and until that moment I was like "er.. ok..???" and at 5:40, I was like "ok so the tower successfully defended, so it has 311 Hp left for a next fight, right?? there's no way the knight is captured"

@@TheEnecca That's just not true, and even if it was, assists are exclusive to proper positioning in the chess portion. If two high skilled fighting game players had an assist and the other didn't that makes a much bigger difference than two players who don't know how to use them properly.

The difference this an chess is that defending a pawn with a piece is significantly less effective than defending a piece with a pawn. Pawns are the most valuable resource since they auto defend any engagement. So a way to play is just to sack for pawns that are only defended by a piece and then try to win the fight,
