- In this video, learn why and how bassists should play behind the beat, with a focus on the slugging technique in Neo Soul Music. I'll explain how this concept applies to different genres and provide examples and practice sessions with a virtual fretboard. Follow along and practice with me to a practice track to hone your skills. Don't forget to check out my course 'Bass-Cabulary' for more in-depth bass instruction at basscabulary.com!

That's why "ghost notes" is my secret sauce!
It sounds more locked when it’s slightly behind almost like a whip between drum and bass. When it’s right on the beat the bass over shadows the drum and they sound separate rather than together
Nice lesson. Laying back makes a world of difference and is one of the untangibles between a beginner and a seasoned player. I didn't notice as much until I started getting into.recording.
Syncopation sounds great
Awesome!
Thanks!
The examples are very helpful. I had to fast forward through half the video because talking went a bit long.
One bass player/teacher that doesn't get the recognition he deserves...Loving your content Mr Santiago blessings to you
I truly appreciate that. Thanks and blessings to you as well! 🙏🏼
I can't hear it. Can you suggest how to train your "micro time" perception?
Funny, I was told by a producer years ago I needed to play on top of the beat LOL.
Nice Warrior bass btw!
Very interesting concept with laying back. I feel like I’ve been playing behind the beat but need to play more on top. Thanks for the correction and the great video
Thanks for sharing. Definitely depends on the genre, but in general, even just a slight bit of laying back can make it sit differently in the pocket. Thanks for watching!
Be careful where/when you use this concept. A lot of people strictly want to hear bass on or on-top of the beat, and won't understand what you're doing or why, which can be misconstrued as having "bad time".
try playing in the pocket with a good drummer 2 cohesive players as one ;)
