Another trick you can do with the bottom snare mic (or top mic), is the the SPL snare trick. Send it to an aux with a transient designer on it. You just want to increase the sustain only to bring out the wires. Then add a compressor and a bit of reverb. Blend in with the overall snare mix to taste. It gives you that exploding snare sound.
Didnt know CLA was putting reverb only on the bottom snare, but i been doing that lately and I love the results so much better than reverb on top snare. I also automate it accordingly.
I think it's better to have a little bleed, then not have any at all. It helps glue the kit together and gives a more natural sound. Obviously, this is genre dependent.
I have used this trick. It works great! It also makes it easy to edit out any odd notes from other instruments that might have gotten in via the midi. For me, it is more appropriate for Pop or Metal because it can add just a little robotic element that doesn't work for every song.
Awesome tips Bob, I know I say that all the time but your stuff is explained very well and is always next level and insightful! The room looks good as well.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOB!!! I’ve been doing this for years, though it was my idea hahaha I love CLA so I’m a little proud of myself now 😂 thanks as always Bobby, hope u are well.
Great tip my brother!!! Under snare is essential - same as 2 mics on the kik. ESSENTIAL for a controllable, versatile experience. (Wish I would have applied this years ago, but so many of us were limited by mic and channel availability).
Thank you for this Bobby! I hope your new version of a room is working out (the background looks different)! You must have had a crazy week and still managed to released an awesome video too! 🙏
before plugins I would use a pro-co turbo rat on a auxiliary channel on the snare top and bottom. sometimes a big muff on a separate aux.ive also double mic'd the bottom snr to do the reverb trick so I can saturate and verb separate channels. great for metal or rock.
I always like your tips. I’ve been working on my snare chops lately so it’s timely as well. I’ve been having success sending the bottom to 2 auxes both with a very tight gate. One has a reverse reverb that is very short and the other has a plate that is timed to the track. It has made me stop putting verb on the top.
Creating your own samples of your kit is a beautiful way to reinforce! However, I believe CLA puts Reverb on the TOP SNARE. That way the crack reverberates, not the sizzle of the snares, which can become too much. (25ms predelay) I also heard sometimes he puts the reverb on the room mics instead and does not put any predelay because it's already distance of the room mic.
Cool idea but the final result in the example sounds pretty bad. I like keeping the bottom snare mic ungated and outside of my snare aux. you want to hear the snare wires rattle! Like the Black album.
Much simpler with a highpass filter, a gate, and a trigger like Aptrigga or Drumagog, using a crean sample from the track. Play with the dinamics a little and that's it
Hey bobby I love your videos, been whatching about 1 year now. I have been referencing a lot of mixes from different mixers over the years but one seems to stick out all the time: Serban Ghenea. and for me its his drums. So i wanted to ask you if you have any idea on how he gets his drums so super snapy and crispy? I have tried everything from parralel compression to transient shapers but non of it does the trick. any idea on how he does it? (Mike dean also got that drum sound on the weeknd's Popular Feat madonna)
@@benleggett5724 I didn’t know that! I’ve seen guys mic the shell before but never 2 mics under the snare. Hard to argue with JJP. Spilt Milk is one of the greatest sounding albums ever!
Probably because everything still works on his old system and to upgrade to a higher Cubase, you need to update the ENTIRE SYSTEM and that is a gargantuan Pain In The Ass.
This is 9.5 and incredibly solid. I’m on 11 on my new computer but can’t get screen recorder to work on it yet. Frustrating… I would have no problem continuing to work in 9.5. 11 is great but I don’t see or hear any difference that makes it better than 9.5 and I’m using all the same plugins on both machines.
@@skykowell u are correct!! I did that and have a brand new system but for some reason every screen recorder I use the audio is messed up on the new system and I have no idea why!!

Can't wait to try it out. Thanks
I usually just pull up a drum replacement tool. You get those very stereo'ed quality samples you can then carve and mistreat to your liking.😊

No leakage. It's good to not have leakage! Another great tip.

@@davejohnsonmusic I’m not against mic leakage at all. Just for this technique.

Thanks so much Tim!
Thank you for acoustic treatment in your green screen environment 😅. No sarcasm good work!
That bottom snare sound seems quite late. I would edit the sample more tightly, and maybe even move the midi notes 15-25ms earlier.
Damn I would be happy to get that snare sound BEFORE the spice! LOL
10:19 😄 Lol
Feels like Sumner has been away for a while. Good to have him back to his old tricks again.

It's always nice when a technique we've been doing for ages gets an endorsement from someone we respect
About the gating stuff, use the midi to trigger the gate as a key input on the live channel: 100% accurate ;)

Excellent Bobby! Just Excellent! Another great video...thank you!
Thanks Angelo!
Perfect timing - I'll be trying that tomorrow...thanks Doc!
Great Dave!
Now THAT is the kinda thing I sub for! Excellent tip, I would've never considered that on my own.
Thanks and thanks for subbing!
Great snare tip! Thanks Dr. Bob!
Any time!
fyi the Purafied Liquid Death Snare VST can be used for the snare bottom, and it is currently free
Yes! Great snare. I have artist presets in that plugin. Was cool of them to ask me!
Sometimes I use a noise track, spectral shaped and gated by the top snare, this way I have full control over the length of the bottom...
I'll be trying that soon. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks Mickey!

Dang! Has that Billie Jean snare pop, and crispness.

He claims to put it on the bottom but who knows right??
Thank Bobby, brilliant tips
Thanks for watching!
sonnox drum gate does shine amazing ai to sort what hit to pass through.... hint for your black Friday shopping
: )
I’ll have to try it as this trick demands no bleed with this much compression and top end…
What about press rolls and stick drags. Won’t these be left out or slip through the “cracks” somehow? Thanks for doing these videos!
Thanks! Great tip!
Thanks Bob !😊
U are welcome!
I've done this kind of thing before but ran into trouble in the fills & grace notes.
Agreed! This technique solves that problem.
To capture those Grace notes you would need to set your threshold more sensitive and then go through and delete any false triggers.
Thaks for the tip!
Ur welcome!
I take a bottom sample and trigger it from the top mic using Slate Trigger
Great concept. I’ve never found Trigger to be accurate.

Stereo bottom snare.......interesting!
It’s really just a mono mic but it was rendered in stereo.
But the waveforms on the left/right aren’t identical looking and it sounded like it could be stereo too?
