Nice track! My initial reaction was to go "hell no, artistic integrity is everything, keep the gap in the Vox" - but then flipped the concept on its head and thought "what If I originally wrote the vocals running together like that - would I put the gaps in?" The answer would be no. Maybe to mix it up as a build out of a breakdown or something but yeah - less is more. Thanks man.
this thought process proves why "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" is the greatest song ever. it starts with the chorus and just keeps getting better and moves and changes all the time.
@@BobbyHuff It’s rare I like starting on the chorus, but ‘Counting Stars’ by One Republic in the lower octave with just a classical is stylish move. It gives the song something to come back to when it needs to pump the breaks later on. As a songwriter, it’s perfectly executed. Then again, even that’s an evolution of the Beatles.
Every hit moves forward with mini hooks. Sing a third or octave higher, phrase on 1 +, double up phrases to steamroll it into a big chorus. Push & Pull.
@@BobbyHuff overlook my screen icon. I am working on an 80s style metal project. So this the logo that was designed with the band name. I am a keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist too. So I am a musical Mutt..
I recall Clearmountain being asked, what’s the main thing that makes a great mix? He answered, “the song arrangement.” As usual, I’ll be going through my tracks to see where I need to apply this technique. Your applications have improved every corner of my production values. Thanks again, Bob!
Me: play video Bobby: the Beatles, Chris Lord Alge, Mutt Lange technique Me: don't play with me, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOB!!!!!!!!!! Also me after watching the video: you did it again, Bobby, thanks for everything!!!
I'm glad you said that you tried to keep the first half of the verse like it was and speed the second half up. That was my immediate solution. But if you say it didn't work, I'll trust you. Sometimes ideas that seem good in your head don't work in practice.
Yeah.I thought it would sound good leaving the first two gaps , with maybe a novelty hook in between.. and then the continuous part follows. Any later verses could all be joined up like the part in this video. But that's the point, to always try everything and constantly think of the listener's attention span.
Funny enough, I wrote my comment before the solution to see if I’d do the same. Yup! Create the perception of speed (horizontal movement) and build up the size (vertical stacking). To do this takes experience, but if this cliche rock song can become entertaining, anything can.
An excellent tip! I noticed whenever I'd play a track for someone somewhere else, I could hear it as if I was someone else and even BEFORE this or that part came along, I knew it needed fixing. SO this suggestion is spot on IMO!
🤣🙃😂 So you know how every time I say I have a mix to send it takes 3 days? LOL so true! That focus trick is super important! You can get too detail focused and miss the sound and feel of the whole thing. For me, it seems to help if I kinda stretch my face, blink, widen my eyes, then try to really let it relax... and also to keep my eyes moving around the room without really settling... and the whole sound of the mix comes through. BTW, I really dig your adapted arrangement, it grooves and does indeed get to the point. And here we see why the new pop song is 2:30. Crazy. BTW, Mama just hit TH-cam and your master is just brilliant, it sounds better after the algorithm than ever before. Folks, you need help hit the Doc up, he's amazing! :)
Thanks so much. I can’t believe how many people have commented that it reminds them of Sweet. They had a few songs that really killed me! Had a few Jellyfish comments too.
First version is classic The Sweet, for the second version they brought in Jeff Lynne. :-) Shame they don't give you time to build your verse anymore, but that said, the second version is tighter and more fun. Would love to hear the whole thing! And I totally agree - if in doubt, cut out every other thing, and most of the time, surprisingly, it'll work just as well or better.
Really good improvement to the arrangement! I love the dirt on that lead vocal. Would you like to share the chain for the lead vocals? The whole song sounds great!
Completely unrelated, but this song reminded me of the couple sitting next to me yesterday on a flight from Santorini to Frankfurt. I mean, good for him but...😂
Very cool! Totally agree! I heard it drag.on the first run through and then you went into it.. ahh im getting there.. what you did definitely brought life and movement to the part! Having your hero in the room is a great ear and mind opener and totally helps shift your focus and lifts a veil, i had something similar to this happen recently and your vid totally confirms my own experience! Love it doc! Keep up the great work! Bless 🙏🕊️
The technique and point of the video is solid... good one. I would have liked to hear the verse split; I missed the space. And going from space to losing the gap would in itself build momentum. As it ended up, we lost the Beavis and Butthead head shaking air guitar and now it's just wall-to-wall vocal lines. I had a hard time telling the sections apart a bit on first listen, actually. Anyway, nice singing and playing. Thx for sharing!
Dude!? This is terrific. Thanks for sharing your experience and that of your heroes. You're one of my heroes! hehehe. Seriously, this is great insight and let's us knwo we should be listening with more than our ears, just mixing, but from more of a producer's perspective. Although, while I love what you did with this, it may be difficult to get the composer/songwriter/band on board with your changes. What guidance would you give to overcome that type of hurdle?
Great question! I’m the composer and the band. Hahaha. If I were doing this for someone else I would make a mock up of these changes and suggest it to them and let them decide.

Not arguing the correctness of this in today's society but it's freaking sad. Zep, Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, etc. would never make it as a new band today and we would never have had that great music because nobody has the patience to just chill with a song.
Well, Bob is drawing on techniques that predate those bands. Context is also important. The bands (types of bands) you mentioned were not writing for pop forms. Nevertheless, these kinds of techniques are not saddled to formats. They’re just good techniques that each of those bands routinely applied.
@@BobbyHuff Great advice. Sadly. But, I've never cared for the cookie cutter pop song structure bs. That said, that is what makes money and that's what makes your advice so important. Me? I'm still going to stick with what I do and never make a penny. Oh well.
@@BobbyHuff Absolutely. Don't take what I said as a critique of you. Its a critique of the BS industry. I totally respect your advice on how to achieve that.
I love you, Doc, but the idea that 'the greatest of the [music] industry are the best ones at grabbing the attention of the common listener' is absurd.
