Reducing clutter reduces anxiety. Period. Banish unfinished projects that visually hound you with silent guilt trips or steal your time by making it difficult to find your needs in the chaos. Reducing clutter reduces friction against the life you want to live.

I travel often for work and it makes it a bit tricky to keep up with maintaining my living space. It was never "messy", and I declutter quarterly, but came home one day and realized there was too much stuff hanging around that I didn't want or need. I took a week off and got to work: donated a bunch of clothing, moved seasonal items to storage, and got rid of useless items altogether. I realized that I was holding on to "stuff" to cover over a scarcity mindset that I picked up in childhood. It took a good week and it was exhausting, but well worth the effort. Still not quite done, but committed to sticking to keeping my space as essential as possible so I can free my mind to create a better life.

John, you’re absolutely right when you said that we try to hold on our past, thinking like it’s a superpower, but it’s not, it’s just PRETEND. You’re absolutely right ❤🎉

What an important conversation...on so many levels! I really enjoyed this one and I hope it motivates many people. I've been watching Dawn for a few years now, and she's right about building that skill slowly, one drawer at a time...over the span of about 6 months, I was able to declutter about 60% of my house, and then this past summer tackled the "boss level" (the attic of unfulfilled dreams and holiday clutter)! I feel so much more at peace in my own home now!

This is heart wrenching and one of the best conversations on the topic I’ve heard. And I’ve been soaking up content on the topic for at least a decade.

"throw pillows" 😮 watch out John that is Dawns only weakness. 😉 Great talk! Message! Just made me giggle if you know Dawn. You two are both so great. Love seeing your talks together always. I think Dawn should come in and help you out in real life and walk you through it.

Also Dawn has great videos on decluttering areas of your house. Would be fun to do with your wife. But in a light hearted way. Have fun with it. Play some music. Make some snacks. Have a date declutter night.

I don't have a lot of stuff... I can easily throw things away. Problem is my kids of course and my husband. He's a musician so he has a ton of music equipment, and also owns his own handyman business so lots of tools and materials including larger pieces of equipment. Top that off with his hobby of reefing (saltwater fish tanks) and the amount of STUFF is overwhelming and downright depressing sometimes as a mom in charge of the house who also works part time. Our family of 6 lives in a 1000 sq ft 3/1/1 house. I'm at a loss and trying to clean feels hopeless.

I personally think its important not to conflate the stuff w a closure of a dream. Our spiritual growth may determine and point to s different access point to that dream. Personally, my gear from 20 years ago prevented me from opening to new creative access points. Yes, you can still play w a band, but it may be on a different instrument, and for very different gratifications, imho.

Wow! I love my books.. And I have a lot of them... to me they are my "friends". Weird, huh? I once decided to slowly get rid of about maybe a dozen of them... fast forward about 2 years later and I wanted to re-read a part of a book and it was one I gave away. Yes, I re-read books..eeesh. I don't have books to "look smart". Now what???

Now is the time to think and tackle this as Christmas coming up.
I will either get clutter reduced enough in this time or not.

It's as important to practice discipline and discernment in all our inputs - everything we take in or consume... And remember that we were built for output. Essential-izing inputs can streamline and efficien-cize our output.

Delony... learn songs and play songs your children enjoy. Engage them and teach them. You will feel very fulfilled. Simplify your guitar hobby and it'll be easier to have the space and use the items you have. It will be enjoyable again. Instead of looking to the past. You can look at all the future memories you will make.❤

What about the opposite? I get anxious when there is clutter and I just want to clean and put things away and throw away. Or when I’m being on chores and dirtiness gets me anxious.

I think TH-cam is part of the problem. We need to learn to live life and not focus so much on influencers and trying to live up to standards that are impossible! Fitness influencers, cleaning channels, etc. Get off the media and get outside and live life!!!

The books and “look how smart I am” is relatable. We moved into a very small house and we had toddlers. I didn’t want bookshelves in the living room because there wasn’t much room and I wanted one less thing the kids could make a mess with. My husband’s response was, “but how will people know I’m smart if they don’t see my books?” Umm, how about all the letters after your name? (He has an MD and PhD)

@theminimalmom Dawn, that's not like you to not credit other people. Please let John know that you learned "identity clutter" from Cas @clutterbug. 😔
