    I just purchased this meter pretty much all because of your reviews. very well done, I found a lot of information in your videos. I have seen the input protection pit falls but totally agree with u in the fact that it will never leave my bench. thanks for the time and money put into this video, it really made my decision

    I've been using one of these for about a year; it's great. Personally, I love that it never turns itself off. I have it on for a reason, frequency for hours and occasionally the meter is out of reach. Great review by the way.
    Also that grey capacitance, transistor, temperature outlet does work (for capacitance) because the mAuA range is shorted to COM through a small value resistor that doesn't effect measurements.

    Hello enthusiasts! I just got my UT61E but the capacitance range shows ~250 pf of residual capacitance, but the manual says it should be around 50 pf. Does it really matter? I don't mind using the REL button to subtract that residue, The thing that worries me is if the multimeter is faulty and I have to exchange it.
    thanks

      As far as I am concerned, UT61E has a few versions in the recent 10 years, and there may be a few difference in each version. But what you say does not matter and I have never heard any conplain about the initial value of capacitance mode. The instruction is out of date, I think.

    Really enjoyed this review... thanks very much! A comment on the stock probes: they seem to ship them with some kind of coating that greatly reduces their ability to pass a momentary conductivity test. I polished the ends of my 61E probes with Autosol metal polish, and they instantly performed as well as a set of high end probes. If you don't have any AutoSol in your drawer, anything - even an SOS or a ScotchBrite pad - should work as well. Even a fine grit sandpaper. Give it a try. Keep rockin! >Charlie

  • @yambo59
    @yambo59 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have the probemasters and they are amazing quality for sure, only recently got my first set and they are well worth the money for sure. But on many stock probes ive found that you can often noticeably improve the continuity performance and reduce the resistance by cleaning them with alcohol or deoxit and fine steel wool. There seems to be some kind of invisible oxidation or coating that adds resistance, once you remove it the difference is very noticeable and performance can be much better - ive greatly improved a few budget leads quite a bit. Far as Dave Jones method of testing I know hes a highly educated engineer and im certainly not, but it seems a bit extreme and unpractically fast for even some decent meters especially with stock leads. Non latched meters will never perform perfectly under that kind of test, and how many times do you actually test a circuit by sweeping it like a frantic crack-head on steroids-lol I think each meter should be tested pretty much as you did using the stock leads vs. Probemasters, this shows plainly whether the continuity performance with a particular meter is due mainly to the meter or the leads, seems the fair way to do it.

    • @Rokaz666
      @Rokaz666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed! I was wondering why my resistance measuring on new my Uni-T UT61E so inconsistent. I have cleaned the probes with 70% isopropyl alcohol and it works like a treat!

    As a hobbyist, I am trying to determine if features like backlight (available in the UT61D) outweigh some of the accuracy/ features of the UT61E. In your opinion am I losing too many other features that the 61E provides in order to get a single feature that the 61D?

    • @rupert274
      @rupert274 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've no authority on the subject but in my opinion the backlight isn't necessary. Good indoor lighting is ubiquitous for me. I can use a lamp or torch in the very unlikely scenario that I need it. The reviewer does say that the UT61D backlight only stays on for 10 seconds and you have to press and hold the button to activate it. That said, the accuracy of the E model is possibly overkill for a hobbyist. The response time of the continuity tester is better on the E model as well, according to the reviews on this channel.

    • @whuzzzup
      @whuzzzup 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put a backlight in yourself if you want to. I think on EEVblog forum some guy wrote how he did it, you can google it.

    As I said below I got a very good deal on a 61E and glad I got it and only whine for me is no backlight, but again there is the 22,000 count display. But im also very pleased with my Amprobe AM520 HVAC meter, cost about $50 and like you say im decently impressed with the quality feel and overall performance in its price range. My AM520 is nowhere near Amprobes best meter so I can see how their high end stuff could be very good indeed.

  • @yambo59
    @yambo59 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I REALLY lucked out last recently-- I stumbled across a screaming "deal of the hour" so to speak on Newegg and got the UT61E meter brand new for $36.53 and free shipping-!! I think it must have been a pricing mistake as they pulled it right after I bought mine, I fully expected to get one of the lower models of the series like maybe the D but its the "E" alright. I wasnt even looking for one, but for that price I had to bite. I plan to do one of the back light mods as I find I really miss it but I love the 22,000 count display, main reason I bought yet another meter I didnt really need-LOL. Cant understand why they would leave the backlight off the highest model of its line but its Uni-t so go figure. Shame to have no backlight on such a nice clear display. As you said the meter does have a decent solid feel, nice large range switch too. As I do with all my meters I used white model paint to fill in the pointer line for a more finished look. This is one of those meters UniT could put that extra 5% into input protection and a backlight to make it what it should be out of the box. Cant believe im seeing this meter for as much as $80 on some sellers sites, really....?

    Awesome review. I also viewed your shootout. Can you test your Ut-61e now vs your agilent 6 digit one, to see if it has drifted 2 yrs later? Some ppl said to clean probes with iso alcohol to make sure there is no oil or reside on probes which may have cause drifting vs instrument itself. I wouldn't know hence asking please :) P.S I like the 90's techno music in background too haha

    This is a very detailed review and I am grateful for your spending the time and effort to do this. However, in the future would you please go a little more slowly when you drag in outside components featured with the product and, for goodness sake, NOT shake them. Thank you.

    • @accountdeactivated5486
      @accountdeactivated5486 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but it would be better if they were 1kv because if you accidently switch to DC Voltage and measure a voltage which is significant over 240V since it can take up to 1kV but left the Probe in the current plug, well shit... It's unprobably but would have been nice to have

    Good review, seems Uni-t make fairly good equipment, I have a UT10E and it has been very good so far. When you say the good feel, I think it's the weight and the quality plastics used in the body/frame, and I agree. Good tip re the trimmers and forums. Pretty sure if you hold down blue or yellow button as you turn rotary switch to on, it disables auto off, gives 5 rapid beeps to confirm, you still get 15 minute warning beeps tho. (ignore).

    I like the UNI-T line up, I know they are not the best, but I think they are ok for a hobbyist like myself. Not really for the professional engineer. If that is what you need then get a FLUKE. I have a high end CEM and like it as well. These all Chinese brands, but still good. I do wish this one had a back light. My CEM has a color LED display, so no back light needed, but for one like this it is a must for me. I would add a back light myself.

    You can use the gray ktypetransistor thingy to measure caps and resistors With the e model

  • @leeolds4891
    @leeolds4891 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the review. I picked one up. It looks identical inside with the exception that the cap next to the resistor network is less than half the size of what yours has, and there is an 'R' written on the circuit board with black sharpie. It's it's also reading consistently about 1% above all of my super cheapo meters and battery chargers. I wish I had a way to verify it was operating within spec.

    • @leeolds4891
      @leeolds4891 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ran into a couple of issues while checking out this meter.
      It reports all of my 1% 220ohm and 270ohm resistors as under the specified value by about 1.5% to 3%. Also the instructions suggest using Delta for resistance values less than 2K, but the meter will not auto range above ~250ohms if the Delta value is set. The third thing I noticed is that it takes a very long time for 10Mohm resistance to settle, although it eventually settles within spec.
      Is my meter defective, or are all these problems common to the UT61E? Should I return it to Amazon for an exchange? This is my first moderately decent meter, so I really don't know what I should be expecting.
      I did spot checks on the rest of my 1% resistors (from 1ohm to 10Mohms), and they all measured within spec. Also, I picked up a cheap voltage ref (AD584L 2.5v, 5v, 7.5v, 10v), and the meter checks out ok with it, although I couldn't test the claimed 2.2v 0.0001 0.01% + 2 accuracy. (I may try to check it by splitting the 2.5v reference voltage with a couple of matched resistors.)
      Thanks again for the great reviews!

    • @TechnologyCatalyst
      @TechnologyCatalyst  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lee Olds If it's amazon, I'd just exchange it. Their return policy is unbeatable. You could try four wire measurement to check the resistance of the resistors. (assuming the voltage accuracy of your meter can be trusted) And by four wire, I mean manually do it, assuming you don't have a meter that can do four-wire measurement. Or just utilize amazon's awesome return policy. I had one 61E and two 61D's and they were all near the middle of the spec for each range. You might have just gotten unlucky. Anyway, good luck--I hope you get it sorted out!

  • @TheRadiogeek
    @TheRadiogeek 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I got one of these from Amazon and it was way off. My 10 volt source was reading 8.7 volts and a fresh AA battery was reading 1.42 volts. I did the same measurement with my fluke 17B and got 10 volts and 1.63 volt readings. I checked the meters 9 volt battery and it was good. I guess I got a dud. I sent it back and ordered a green lee 510A meter. It costs three times the as much as the UT61E but I didn't want to reorder another uni t meter. I think it's the same as a brymen 257s? Take care and keep the videos coming.

    With the peak functionality, you can measure the peak voltage, e.g. for 240V AC sin wave, it gives you a reading of about 340V, so it's not just normal min/max function.
    Also you didn't mention frequency response for AC measurement. It's got quite impressive frequency response range, way better than Fluke meters that cost 3-4 times. As far as I know, no multimeter under $100 has this wide band, even the 87V can't compete with this.

    So, why do you care about manuals? All you really need are the specifications. Do you need to picture to show you how you are supposed to measure resistance?

      For beginners. A lot of people buying a $50 multimeter are going to be new to electronics. A good manual takes no work to create and is really helpful for those who need it. The novice isn't going to need a manual except for the occasional lookup of power-on sequences
