Always amazes me how difficult they are to get going, but when they’re nice and warmed up, they sound really nice. I love the clunking sound during the rotation before ignition.

While it is somewhat true, understand that they cycle the engine for 7-9 blades before adding fuel. That moves the oil so they don't hydrolock. Especially important when an aircraft has set for a bit.
@@Ripper13F1V Yes it is often 3 complete revs before allowing fuel, which supposedly clears the oil from the bottom cylinders. But after that the induction and ignition problems are pathetic and bizarre and destroy engine life. Not good design work. Japanese radials didn't have this problem.
He never took it to full throttle. Idled for about three minutes then did a light run up to maybe 1/3 throttle then idled for another 30 seconds and shut it down.
This is in Illinois. I have no idea if the plane is still there but as I haven’t seen any photos of it on the airshow circuit I would say it’s a safe bet that it’s tucked away in a hanger at Aurora Muni.
She was a little grumpy but she woke up Growling,, love that "lope ! Thanks,
2000 horses coming to life!
A beautiful bird, just warming up and it will howl.
Surprised there was no fire guard standing by.
Greatest sound in aviation,a radial engine!
gotta love the sound of those old radials!!!!
what a nice sound
Damn I love the sound of a round engine firing up!❤
Smoky Angel 👼🏻💨
That R2800 is like a dragon being woken up.
A beautiful noise !
That must smell li,e freedom!
This old bird wakes up like I do. Grumpy, takes a while to get started, sputtering and with lots of fumes..lol
Ah the sound of a radial engine….
Needed one more pump from the primer.
Thats a cool old bird
So sweet !
love the sound of those radial engines
Fuck that sounds good.
That plane is a BEAST!!!!!!!
That Pratt & Whitney sounds soooooooo damn good!!
Beautiful
Boy does that sound cool!!
Love all that smoke!
Thyis guy flies over my house frequently.I live about five miles from KARR.
nice....real nice Kitty
Starting a radial is like warming up your wife. You have to coax and cojole her or she is not gonna like you.
Love the old war bird's
Nothing like the sound of an old radial engine
Why is nobody standing close by with a fire extinguisher?
That was an engine that didn't want waking up! Bit like trying to get a teenager up on a Saturday morning to do chores! 🤣. Nuff said 🙂
Good comparison👍

LOl! I was just thinking the same thing! A Merlin bursts into life the moment you press the starter button!
@@bugattieb110ss Not always, they can be just as troublesome starting sometimes.

Must have been sitting for awhile ...based on how much it was smoking.
Pretty sure this was the first start after winter hibernation.
This is what would have been shooting down the Japanese A7M1 Reppu, had the war continued.
Nothing sounds better than them big wasp radical engines
Sounds like it's "cammed up" at first, don't it.
I wish you'd have recorded long enough for the engine to warm up, and smooth out.
We got bogies inbound 20 miles out and closing fast……. shit… I hope I can get this thing cranked in time 😩😩
Whine..cough...bang...wrrrrr...knock...splutter...brmmmmmm
It reminds me of the BF109
Nothing like a 109
I can confidently say that that engine was definitely made by British Leyland sometime in the 1970's.
One was one of the finest engines ever built, the P and W R2800, and the other was British Leyland rubbish.
Wow!
Left the 2000 hp what a plane
Zdravím z Czech Republic. Pratt Whitney 2 100 PS. to je síla. Tak ať Vám to lítá.
Should have shown it after it got to full throttle. She sings!

Where was the fire guard?
How many Quarts of oil per mile
I'm a p47 fan thru and thru, but I'll take one of those ,yup
Does a canopy like that provide the same protection from machine gun bullets that the raised back and steel plating did for the F6F?
It just gives you better view when you look over shoulder for enemy fighters.the seat back armor plate is still incorporated.
Just like me when waking up.....
Come crank this thing up at my house will ya. I have serious misquote problem.
Does she still fly?
To the best of my knowledge, yes!
Radial engines can be a bitch to start but once they are running they sound soooo good
Sounds good, but the prop looks like it's barely turning, kinda ruins the whole thing. Isn't there some way to fix that?
Sounds like several Harleys
Cold start, no cart, I bet he wasn’t the owner.
Needs more cylinders
timing is about 5 degrees BTC off ,.whoever set it , didn't take cam play into account and take out the backlash by rocking the prop on tdc.
The unilateral phase detractors are probably misaligned.
@@karlplaysdrums they have pills for that. see a doctor
wonder what the battery looks like ?
Or is there an external feed ?
Positive and a negative
Is this in Oregon?

I drove on of these while in the military. Thy took them from us and gave them to the French who were fighting for their lives in French Indo China.
If you don't see smoke, you are out of oil
Did they all have hard starting like that back in the war? I mean if you need to get up in the air quickly your're gonna be dead.
プロペラが止まっていたり、反対側に回って見えたりするのは、何故なんでしょう?
Hope this guy isn't on a scramble squadron.
All of the warbird pilots will tell you this is the best plane to fly. Goes straight up and rips.
Having trouble just get'n the engine to start and you want to fly that thing? Haha jk, I know what's up.. I'm a pilot too
Small Chevy V-8 with turbos could muster up 3000 hp
Greta is horrified
Excellent
Sluggish
Z takimi spalinami daleko nie poleci
Pre-flight requires rotating the propeller through 5 rotations, BY HAND, before start-up ! Worst start-up of a radial I have ever seen here !
You never supposed maybe somebody already did that part? Just because it wasn't included in this video for your entertainment?
What a clunker
But very fast.
seems the engine is in bad condition, never heard a so ugly running radial...
Must be the first time he ever started a R-2800
You know it. Like trying to give Grandma the Rusty Trombone without lube.
Easy to criticize others ain’t it!
Typical P&W radial engine they can be temperamental when they want when starting them. Nothing out of the ordinary.
@@stevehaller6332 what you say is correct; hot day and trying to start a PW 3350 can be a touchy situation.
