Interesting comparison. Those who have never shot with Olympus don’t know what they’re missing. I switched from Canon full frame and I am in awe of what the em5ii produces in image quality with the Oly premium primes or even Panasonic primes.

I have the olympus pen f and the fujifilm x100v. There is something special about the color science of the pen f even when comparing to other olympus bodies. I love both cameras so much. Probably the sexiest cameras out right now aside form a Leica. But the biggest point is that both cameras make me want to go out and shoot all the time. That's how a camera should make you feel.

Wow Olympus blows me away every time. Their colors are (probably) top of the pack for SOOC. It makes me want to shop around for some used gear (which is still really expensive it holds value like gold). Also, I am really curious about how different the outcome would be if you used a new fuji body. Fun comparison!

A few years ago I purchased both the X-Pro2 and the Olympus EM1 Mk 1, knowing I would sell one of them. In short, I sold the Fuji as I found that the Olympus photos contained much more detail. I used the Oly 25mm f1.8 and the Fuji 35mm f2. I can always post process in RNI or VSCO to get a film sim.

    Xe3 is a 24 MP sensor
I’ve done a comparison with an Em1 ii and an Oly 12-40 wide open at 2.8 vs the Fuji Xe3 and 23mm 2.0 at 4.0 which should have given the Fuji the edge but my Olympus images were much sharper and the colors were much more pleasing. This made no sense so I figured it was the noise reduction on the Fuji, so I set it to -4. Same results, so I placed the Fuji, which doesn’t have stabilization, on a tripod while I shot the Olympus hand held - still the same results. While comparing images I shot with an entry level Oly Em10 ii, to the Fuji Xe3, the results were the same; Fuji images tend to look flatter than Oly images. I did try a comparison with the Fuji 50mm and the Oly 12-40, at an f stop of 4.0 and 2.8 respectively, and the Fuji images were slightly sharper than those taken with the 23mm but the Olympus images were still much nicer - sharper, more depth and richer colors straight out of camera. Please note that all cameras were set to an ISO of 200 so noise was never an issue and did not sway the results. I love Fuji but I will be selling it when Olympus comes out with a compact camera with a new sensor.

Interesting this, I have both Fuji and Olympus mkii.Olympus is underated, it is quite frankly brilliant. Since the company 'folded' I've noticed an increased focus on this system. I think once people now what they are missing it'll grow in demand, limited supply is going to increase the demand. Thanks for your hard work.

Nice. This video makes me feel even better about my gear choices. For years, I have been drooling over the Olympus 25mm F/1.2; however I bought the Olympus 25mm F1.8 instead, purely for the smaller factor. Most technical reviews claim sharpness is nearly the same on the two lenses. Both lenses balance well on an EM1 MK II, but smaller lens makes for a less intimidating set-up for social and candid portrait photography. The weather-sealing on the 25MM PRO is appealing, but I have an Olympus 12-40 F2.8 PRO for those situations. I'd like to see a similar unscientific comparison video of the Olympus 25mm F/1.8mm, Olympus 25mm F/1.2 PRO, and Olympus 12-40mm F/2.8 PRO. Maybe next time do your selfies with a tripod and timer or cell-phone triggering.

I have the 12-40 f2.8 Pro and the 25mm 1.8. The Pro is sharper for sure but the 25 is very sharp and just has a nice look that I actually prefer in some cases. It reminds me of my 45mm 1.8 in the way it renders. The 25mm is a perfect fit on the smaller cameras like my Pen F and has a little shallower depth of field at that focal length. The 25mm makes a great street shooter. Small light and fast. While the 12-40 I use on my EM1.2 as a mostly landscape lens. If I was forced to have only one lens it would be the 25.

I would love to see more comparisons like these. As a micro four thirds user, I have always wanted to know what it is that I am missing out on (if any!). The most relevant comparison that I can think of is that, for a fixed $1000, what is the best that each brand can offer, and then do an image quality comparison based on that.

Awesome test. I have not seen a side by side Olympus pro prime vs fuji prime test. I am not surprised by your results. I mentioned before my 16mp Olympus is just as sharp with the 12-40 2.8 pro lens as my fuji xt2 with either the 23 f1.4 or 35 1.4 lens. And that is having the lenses stopped down for landscape shots. Olympus pro lenser are the shit. I much prefer the color from my fuji as the greens and blues are over saturated even in muted or natural color profile in my Olympus. From what I have seen with the 20mp Olympus sensors they muted the colors to make them more natural. I still have to give the nod to fuji for colors. The classic chrome and Astia are amazing and really hard to match with other cameras no matter how hard you try in post.

About DoF if you take advantage of 4:3 aspect you can get closer to subject. Im coming form Sony a6000 and for portraits I really love 4:3 aspect. And in olympus I find myself shooting more in portrait orientation because it's kinda more square like. I never liked 2:3 always cropping to 3:4. I would have to disagree with what many folks are saying about the Olympus system. I had a Olympus Em1 from 2014 and as much as I loved it I found the images not as sharp as my Fuji XPRO2 or my Fujifilm Xt2. I have a 24x16 inch image of my daughter as a baby taken with my Olympus Em1 and as much as i love it it doesn't compare to my Fuji photos. After Fuji I moved to a Sony A7iii and the Sony 55mm f1.8 zeiss. Now that combination blew both the Fuji and Olympus out of the water in regards to sharp photos. I loved all camera systems but I had to get rid of olympus in the end because in my opinion the quality was not there. I moved back to Fuji because I loved the colors. Just recently picked up a X-S10 and a 35mm f1.4 .I can't speak for the newer Olympus bodies with the 20mp sensor or the Pro primes. I feel what killed Olympus is the size of the cameras and the lenses. I just can't understand why the cameras and lenses have to be so big. These days Full frame Bodies are the same size as the micro 4/3rds. Yes the Zooms are large but many of the primes are still compact. My Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 is small and only a tad bit bigger than a Olympus Body and equivalent lens. Cheers.

AFAIK, Fuji xtrans files require unique sharpening settings in lightroom, so comparing the same settings against Olympus will yield flawed results. That being said though, I would still expect the olympus to be sharper, because the Fuji 35 1.4 was pretty mediocre resolution-wise, but impressive "character-wise".

Having shot both systems extensively for years I can confirm that Olympus cameras and lenses produce better, sharper images and better colors than Fuji. This is using both Lightroom and Capture One. When it comes to low light performance, Fuji starts pulling ahead at ISO 6400. Below that level noise and detail levels are equal for practical purposes.

Given that ISO 200 is native speed for Olympus, imagine there would be a deal of noise at above 1000.

I use both Olympus and Fujifilm. I have the EM-1 MKII you used and also used to have the XE2. I’ve owned the XF35mm f1.4 since it first came out and still use it but I’ve never owned or used the M Zuiko 25mm f1.2. At that focal length I’ve used both the Oly 25 1.8 and the Panny 25 1.7. In terms of image quality, Olympus has never disappointed me (except for when using the 75-300 zoom) but when I need the highest quality images I tend to reach for Fujifilm. Your results don’t surprise me however because the newer and higher resolution sensor on the EM1 together with the more modern, pro glass should easily beat the older, smaller XE2 sensor when combined with the older optics.

  • @paulthomas8986

I don't think there was any problem with your test of the Fuji 35mm f1.4. That lens is soft up close wide open. It has the low contrast vintage look which is desirable too many. If you shoot a subject further away wide open the sharpness at 1.4 is excellent. I have compared mine against my Nikon Z6 and 50mm 1.8 S lens which everyone raves about being the sharpest lens, but my fuji is sharper at intermediate and longer ranges wide open. The Nikon is sharper at headshot and half body shot lengths though.

  • @professionalpotato4764
    @professionalpotato4764 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The sharpness difference probably comes down to a few things.
    1) The 35mm f/1.4 was designed to be inperfect and slightly soft with character, the 25mm f/1.2 was designed to be crazy sharp.
    2) The 35mm was resolving a less pixel dense sensor, hence any softness or lack of detail is further amplified. It's like a 30mp vs 80mp full frame kinda pixel density comparison.
Perhaps by now the 33mm f/1.4 would be a better comparison because that lens is designed to be ultra sharp.

"It was very unscientific." That´s the conclusion you should take away. And that you should know your equipment, how to use it and where the limitations are before you settle your opinion.
If you want to take photos on very close distances, most fuji-lenses are not made for this. Be aware of that. Also the xe2 is a 7 years old camera model. The af is not very up to date. Yeah. So maybe don´t use a selfie you made on arms length which should be very close to the closest focusing distance and expect the eye-autofocus to work perfectly fine, if the camera doesn´t even have that.
The 35mm 1.4 is designed to mimic 50mm-classics of the 70ties. It´s not perfect on 1.4. Sure it´s nice to have a lens which is sharp at wide open, but this lens isn´t that lens.
Though if you have the right light and the right motive i just totally love the renderings and colors the 35mm produces. Some people find it magical, some people don´t experience that. Sometimes i run into problems because this isn´t meant to be an optically perfect lens, but for the benefits i´m okay with that.
I´m sure Olympus is a fine system and people love it and it might even be better than fuji, who knows? Who cares?
You could use the time to make uneducated youtube-videos to try out the camera and lens to shoot something other than your christmas decorations.
