The bar antenna is receiving because the external antenna is still connected. If you disconnect the external one while receiving with the internal bar one you'll see the difference.
I found the bar antenna inside this radio useless so I always use external, also made a 16 gauge speaker wire antenna stretched around the room at ceiling height and it picks up alot of HF signals ...ive heard great things about indoor shortwave loops as well
As I recall, I just used a short SMA to BNC wire for stress relief attached to a home brew 9:1 unun and some random length of wire in the tree. I've done the same before without the unun by solder a piece of wire into an sma connector - but the connection was a little brittle.

BAR antenna receives worse on HF than rubber duck .... is this a malfunction, or does everyone have this?

No, just CW, AM and SSB receive on HF. Which works pretty well for a hand held XCVR!
