  • Part of the MSF Sugar (Thai owned) group, Mulgrave Mill also has an extensive network, incorporating trackage from the former Hambledon Mill south of Cairns. We begin with a look at the mill and its rotary dumper, some shunting around the mill yard, and catch a few trains heading north along various lines. The final sequence begins with the duck under at Redlynch, with a QR Kuranda Scenic train and then empty bins heading for the Barron River delta, and a return chase around the west side of Cairns all the way back to the mill. Of note are the locos with cut down cabs (Hambledon and Redlynch) that were modified specifically for this service.

The operating lease of East Broad Top Railroad by the East Broad Top Railroad Preservation Association ended in April 2012. Negotiations between the parties continued into May 2012 but an operating agreement acceptable to both parties could not be reached. In part due to the late date and likely due to other factors it was decided not to operate the EBT in 2012, 13 or 14. The railroad facilities are currently maintained by a skeleton paid staff and FEBT volunteers. The EBTPA no longer has any involvement with on site activities at the EBT but continues to hold a purchase option for the railroad and is continuing to pursue funding for purchase.

What are those helper like things at the ends of some trains?

They are radio controlled brake vans or brake sleds (depending on your use of UK or US terminology). They are generally used on longer trains, or trains that traverse hilly terrain with steeper grades. They have a compressor on board to supply air brakes which can be applied via radio from the head end to assist in controlling train speed. They also have a parking brake feature to hold the train when the loco is uncoupled for pickups. Remember that the cane bins themselves have no brakes on them. The sleds also have an on-board GPS that measures rear end speed against loco speed. If there is too great a differential because of a break in the train consist, the brakes will automatically apply to prevent a runaway. They are also equipped with sanders and wheel slide detectors to prevent flat spots.
