Thank you all for sharing your experiences of how emotional states have affected you and your horse! It is awesome to see so much awareness of horse and rider mental states, and a willingness to adjust riding and training sessions to better support learning. I actually wondered if my horse had a learning disability! Then I realized that he’s very smart and can do all the things I teach him WHEN he is in the right mood. So now my focus is helping him be in the mood to try, learn and participate with me. That starts with me getting myself in a positive emotional mind set so I can set the mood for one of mutual enjoyment and fun. Then I can see where he’s at go from there.

Great that you were able to realize his connection between mood and learning! Horses are so attuned to our emotional states, so it's awesome you are aware of how your mind set may affect him. Thanks for sharing!

I’m calm and centered when I’m performing optimally and so is my horse. This accounts for our ability to work well together. I really appreciated your explanation of what seems like a simple process of “feel” but for many, myself included, doesn’t always come easily. My horse and I are very cognitive in our approach so I believe my understanding of this concept will help my horse understand it too by responding quickly to my interventions. Thinking about it, I believe he does some of this intuitively to begin with 😊 Thanks!

Thank you for watching and sharing! Feel can take time to develop, and it may be different for each horse. You may be amazed to find how much easier learning comes when you are both in the right mind set, together. ❤️

Me and my horse, we are both calm and centered when we performing optimally. If I´m nervous, the lesson is bad. :) I love your videos ;)

Seems so obvious and yet it hasn’t occurred to me to be aware of this for me or my horse in terms of planning to modulate emotional state as opposed to assuming “it is what it is” for either of us. Thanks for this!

Absolutely! Bringing awareness to your own state of mind, and taking notice of signs for your horse's state of mind, is so important. From there you can work towards a better mindset together to have better rides and improve your shared learning. 🐴❤️

Thank you for this video - very insightful. I don't ride after a stressful day at work - it's hard for me to turn that off right away. I've learned I'm much more effective, and my horse is more relaxed, when I'm relaxed and calm.

    • @HorseClass

Thanks for sharing! Great you are so aware of your own stress and set aside time when you are in a more relaxed frame of mind to ride. That is excellent, and creates space for your horse to be more relaxed right along with you.

Excellent video! I do best when I'm calm, centered, and focused. I've been riding a horse for a year and a half who hadn't been ridden in a long time. He was very distracted at first, not at all engaged with me, and he was so slow - definitely at the bottom left of the U. There was a lot of kicking (by me) in the early days, alas, which was tiring for me and certainly not fun for him (though he didn't seem to care all that much). He's so much better now. I think he needs to get his confidence from the rider, so we've been working on that, and, now that he's better, I can "ride" him less: give the aid and let him go. To the top of the U!

Wonderful that you and your horse are finding a better way to connect, and that you are helping to support him more from the saddle. It can take time to develop that sense but it strengthens your bond as you work on it. Keep it up! 😊

I'm excited after many futile attempts, after finishing my riding in the ring, I was able to able to cue my horse, anxious to return to the barn, to allow me, while still in the saddle, to open the gate and retrieve the swung open gate and return and hitch back the gate. She used to refuse to return to the fence... thinking I'm going back inside. Now she knows!!!

The stable where I ride is always switching up the lesson horses. I understand learning on a variety of horses as they all bring something different to the lesson and we can learn something different from each of them - from the "lazy" one who won't move, to the "hot" one that takes off. I find I do better with consistency though - in terms of the same horse for multiple lessons so I can learn what they are like, how they respond, and in turn adjust my approach and see how they react to my aids.
What are your thoughts on this, and do you have a preference for beginner riders?
    Thank you!

Thank you for the video, I do my best when I feel relaxed and calm, and I start lose my balance and focus when I'm overthinking of my position on each part of my body, and when I start jumping I become afraid and stress

Really interesting video. I only have one question. My horse is really slow and totally not energetic, but then he can suddenly jump from something out of nowhere. after this he feels really tens but he is still slow. In what kind of mood is he then he how can I change my mood and behaviour to avoid this kind of sudden scared jumps?
