Sunday Times Art Critic, Waldemar Januszczak, takes us on a tour of the impressive Skokloster Castle in Sweden. We doubt you will have ever seen a castle like it!
Waldemar, your documentaries are a pleasure to watch. You are an artist and making documentaries is your art form. Please keep making more and tell us about it when you do!
I don’t understand why his videos don’t have views in the tens of thousands! Wake up, World! You’re missing passionate, unparalleled brilliance and humor! (Oops, just noticed subscription numbers!) Where else will you find a designation like “Wackiest Castle Ever Built, Possibly”? And what other art critic/historian has a video dedicated to the pronunciation of his name?
Ah, what is so wacky about the Skokloster castle..? It is an absolute gem regarding the art collection and armory. Not everything was war booty, a lot was commissioned and a lot was bought from Europe. It may be the best preserved and most interesting barock castle in the world. Carl Gustaf Wrangel was not your common soldier - he was a field marshal, admiral and a count... One of the most ruthless warriors during the 30 years war. He was a hard man who also loved beauty. Now isn't that an interesting angle for a portrait/biography? The hard man and his home...
Lovely quick tour - I saw it in the Seventies & was duly amazed. It's by a lake, wasn't lived in for a couple of centuries I believe & yet there's no damp & the textiles are all good as new.
I love how Waldemar kept the same old, tired soundtrack. I've already seen like 10 documentaries of his---from Renaissance Italy to the life of Van Gogh--and it's the same background music over and over and over again. Did the BBC not give him a budget for almost 2 decades so that he could get a soundtrack guy to make new music? LOL...
Wonderful chandelier...leather wall-paper !!..baroque eskimo kyack (sp?) Thanks Waldemar...amazing place. I also concur with your Miro review last Sunday.. ...kristine.
"He was a soldier" 😂😂 Carl Gustaf Wrangel was one of the richest persons in the world during the swedish empire period. He was a field marshal, admiral and a count and Skokloster castle is just one of several buildings he let build.
Such a shame this only lasted 5 minutes and six seconds. Nevertheless it was great to watch. Thank you, Waldemar.
It's the safest period of time for not getting wacko yourself.
Waldemar ROCKS art history!!

A baroque eskimo kayak? That's cheered me up!
Leather wallpaper!!! Amazing!
Must have been an ice box in winter. I always wonder how comfortable these palaces were in winter.
