That's really interesting. It could well be the case for certain models of pandeiros in some production lines but there are some mass produced pandeiros from brands that don't include that hole, and I know a lot of luthiers/independent makers tend not to include it.

I was told that the hole is a necessary part of the shell/ring manufacturing process. Though I can't confirm if that is correct.
