      To understand that, we have to apply a bit of inductive logic, phrased as questions:
      - Who benefits from a population unable to pull apart their speeches, campaigns, promises and bullshit? Among other people, politicians.
      - When or where might a population best learn the skills of logic and rhetoric? At school, primarily state schools.
      - Who is in charge of setting the curricula for schools? The politicians. Supposedly from the advice of experts, but this is routinely shown to be ignored.
      Having people dictate a system over which they stand to reap advantage from guidance detrimental to the majority is... well, corruption of vested power, but it happens all the time.

    • @LetztezBatallion
      @LetztezBatallion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@cameronhector9074 That's a nice thought, but the reality is simply that at such an early age logic is not something you can learn properly. In 3rd grade (8 y/o) children are doing basic math, adding, multiplying, and are starting to learn fractions. They JUST grasped the concept of an abstract number, no longer needing math problems to be explained using objects like "If you had 10 apples...". Their brains are not there just yet for such a thing. To you right now it may seem incredibly easy but remember you had to learn all this in the past, and it was pretty darn hard. Same thing applies to logic.
      After searching through documentation from multiple organizations it seems everyone agrees that around 13 Y/O is when you can start understanding formal logic and apply it properly. Coincidentally, this is the age at which physics and more advanced maths appear in schools (at the very least in my country). At this point it becomes a problem of "where do I put this thing". Physics and mathematics at this level do not use validity/soundness/cogency in any way, shape or form and without that you cannot begin to deconstruct an argument. History, geography and many such subjects do not use formal logic anywhere.
      You would have to create a new subject specifically to teach logic and everything about it, but you'd have to eliminate another subject, or dedicate even less time to each than they have now. And which one would you eliminate? From the top of my head I can't think of one subject that does not serve any purpose for a child/teenager.

      And the man later went on to overthrow the republic and turn Rome into a dictatorship. Yup, it check out.

    • @sparklymage
      @sparklymage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@Deantrey Yes and no. When people say that they make it sound like he ended the rightful rule of the Senate and turned it into a dictatorship, but the Senators had already become corrupt and oligarchical. The murder of the Gracchi brothers by the Senate was the beginning of the end which happened 150 years before Caesar. Not that this necessarily justifies Caesar, but the Senate put him in a position where no one could win. They massively underestimated his popularity with the troops and the people to their ruin.

    • @Deantrey
      @Deantrey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@sparklymage (whispers) issa joke
      But since we're talking serious now. Caesar didn't overthrow the senate because they were corrupt, but because he was on a mission to attain power and his political enemies put him in a position where the only way he could continue to do that and to not lose everything he worked for was to take the action he took.
      The republic could have continued as it was without Caesar taking the action he did. And Caesar could have restored and even improved on the republican system once he had taken power. Of course as I said his whole thing was trying to gain power and retain it too, so by the very logic of his life that option must have been unthinkable and he could hardly be expected to take it. This however does not absolve him of responsibility. If his goal was to be a good public servant and to ensure the health of the Republic, as he presents himself to be in the speech we heard in this video, then likely he would have made different actions and history would have turned out differently. But his own internal values, which yes were drawn from the political climate of his day, privileged the attainment of power over public service (again, contrary to the way he presents himself in this speech).
      So sure, Caesar was not alone in this and in this sense we might say that the Roman republic was as corrupt as he was. But to paint him as a good politician who overthrew a corrupted senate is as historically inaccurate as painting him as a corrupt politician who overthrew a good senate.

    • @sparklymage
      @sparklymage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Deantrey I didn't describe him as a good politician who overthrew a corrupt Senate, though? For one thing, the Senate didn't stop existing when Caesar took over. For another, by all accounts Caesar was actually much better to the average person than the Senate was, so I'm not sure what comparison we are making here. I'm more pointing out that the comparisons people make of Caesar with more modern situations don't really make sense.
      And there is no possible way Caesar could have restored or improved on the republican system. The system was alive in name only by the time of Caesar. They were so divorced from the average person and so high on their own self-importance that it would be impossible to change without removing all of them. This idea that the republic was somehow fundamentally ruined when Caesar made the obvious more explicit is nonsense. For the average Roman there was no fundamental difference between the Senate years and the Caesar years, except that Caesar was more generous with his wealth than the average Senator was.

Certainly the folks who killed him thought he was and there are a few incidents during Caesar's rule that support this (like the time Marc Antony tried to give Caesar a crown and Caesar waited to gauge the crowd's reaction before rejecting it, or him going around wearing purple, a king-associated color). Romans hated the idea of a king, and in many ways it took a few centuries before the emperors of Rome could really rule openly as monarchs rather than the fiction of being "first among equals" while pretending the senate and elected offices still mattered (and those elected offices stayed throughout the imperial period even though the elections had mostly been a sham since even before the Republic fell).

      He was actually trying to become 'speaker' for life. The last king of Rome was thrown off the cities walls when they became a republic. 'Speaker', or 'dictator' in Latin, was a position that the senate had to vote on, usually in an emergency, such as open war between nobles, bureaucratic problems, etc. It had a time limit and the speaker could do whatever was necessary to bring the problems under control, but would be held accountable afterwards for any laws that were broken in the process. They eventually abolished the position until Sulla's mentor was elected into the position. Then Sulla got the position which led to a rebellion against him (with Caesar among them). But, at the time Julius Caesar asked to be made speaker for life, he was close to 60 and most Roman nobility lived only till their 70's, meaning he would only have had the position for 10 years. His nephew Augustus became first emperor after the fallout from Julius Caesars assassination (from the Latin word 'imperator' which means commander).

    I remember having to translate part one of Cicero's counter-argument, his first Catilinarian, in Latin class, and I think it would be worth your time to do a follow up to this video looking at that. There's definitely parallels to modern politics to be made, in that Cicero appealed to fear and anger in his speech and also was able to essentially use unfounded gossip to support his argument while at the same time excusing himself from going into detail (I think the rhetorical device was "omitio," or argument by omission). On the other hand, this all sounds like a lot of work and I'm sure you have ideas lined up already. Good work.
