Awesome start for this little guy. What a great job you are doing. Love to see puppies starting out WANTING to learn, using food as a positive reinforcement. I will never understand those who want to bully/punish and constantly 'correct' a puppy rather then working with their natural primary enforcer. Cute little puppy, bright and wanting to please and work together as a team.
Very nice!! I love watching positive reinforcement training at work. The puppy is adorable too and is learning so well! To the people who are commenting on the treats, you obviously don't understand the concept of positive reinforcement training and behavioural science. Loved this video!!
"Treats" are an effective method to establish the handler as a beneficial "Alpha." Once the "Alpha" relationship is established, training, obedience and establishing acceptable behavior is much easier. German Shepherds can be incredibly loyal and trustworthy! I've worked with shepherds for decades. This handler seems to be doing just fine!
This is so neat! It is very encouraging to see someone starting a young pup out in training correctly. When he goes to his new home, he will have an amazing foundation started in his training! I wish my pup's breeder had done the same. THUMBS UP! :-D
GSD are awesome. My Sable GSD is food motivated and does a bunch of stuff for treats. He was 11 weeks old when we got him and is now 12 weeks. Learned basic obedience with words and hand signals already. Going to do some more with a training lead to start him on Shutzhund obedience. GSD are awesome.
I love how everyone on the internet is an animal expert. "You are feeding him too much" or "This isn't obedience" Yes it is. She is in the beginning stages, associating the word with positive reinforcement. The puppy is 5 weeks. He doesn't understand "Sit" or "lay" yet
Good point. Not to mention the dog DEFINITELY looks older than 5 weeks. I saw my puppy at 6 weeks, and she was no where NEAR this developed. She's just now 8 weeks (today, in fact!) and she looks similar to this pup in terms of physical development.
@SkullBelt Yes, dogs can be trained without food, but positive reinforcement and using food as a reward is a VERY powerful training method. Kudos to these owners for using positive methods with their young puppy. As he grows, he will be eager to learn! There is never a need to train with force.
It's simple training but they are building the foundation of obedience training for pups that are so young. By hand feeding the pup, the dog begins to associate the handler as a 'source', this also builds a bond between the the handler and dog. This comes in handy when you are doing more difficult tricks with the dog later.
Guys, they're giving him treats because he's probably very food motivated...they get bored easily. They are feeding him by eye level. If it's above him, he'll sit. If it's below, he'll lay down. Then you'll start adding the commands a bit later down the road and giving him the treats; the tip of the iceberg or just the beginning. It's not like they're going to know it from the start off and they're just gonna give you the big "DERP" when you say sit and nothing happens. Only thing the Owner is doing is leading him to the basics by following the treats; look each time before they feed him.
Agreed, but German Shepherds listen and watch and pay attention so very well. Hand sign commands are surely in the future with a dog of this nature and intelligence. GSD's are truly amazing!
You can start training at any point, in fact the earlier the better. The most important thing is to be patient, understanding and upbeat. The puppy is biting because he hasn't learned not to yet, he's still learning about the world - when your puppy nips you make a loud "ow" sound, and if you're playing walk away from him and end the play and ignore him for a little bit. He will eventually learn that using his teeth ends interaction quickly.
For a baby like this, there is nothing wrong with using food like this. They are using the puppies meal with the looks so the training lasts as long as his dinner does. As he gets older, they will phase out using food like this and expect more work from him between rewards and also probably convert to using toys as rewards instead. Thats how it works people. Luring only fails where people don't phase it correctly. I agree that a clicker would definitely improve things mind.
My APBT/Mini Shnauzer mutt (as far as I know) was sitting and waiting until i allowed it to begin eating his meal within 2 days when i brought it home at almost 8 weeks.. It doesn't need to be a GSD..
This puppy is so freakin' adorable! (HUGZZ!!) Given this pup is only 5 weeks, there is nothing wrong with what's going on here training wise. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's following your command, cause you aren't really giving any. But he is following your hand and learning and when he pays attention and follows you, you give him yummy food. I think the most important lesson he's learning here is how to learn (and that you have yummy food to earn!) What kind of GSD pup is he?
Of course he's gonna follow you're hand, there's a dog treat in it. You don't expect a dog to be like "Oh a dog treat, uh meh" when you give him one. The dog just wants the treat.
It really depends on the breed and the agency/group you go through. Most will have you apply to adopt (they want to make sure they know who they're adopting the dogs/cats out to). There may or may not be an application/adoption fee but it's usually a small amount and all of that money (plus donations) goes to care for the pets (food, shots, etc). You can also apply to foster pets for groups. You can Google it to find a group in your area for most breeds, cats or dogs. I hope that helps :)
She is actually training him/her. She's first showing him the step to follow, then she will introduce the verbal commands like: down, sit, stay, heel, etc.
positive reinforcement is probably one of the most widely used methods to train, though it is not the only method either. And you dont even need to use food to use positive reinforcement, my GSD who passed away in November wouldn't even take food rewards until she was just over a year old and even then I used toys and play as the reward as thats what she prefered, so there is no one right way, find what works for your dog and do it!
That is the best way to train. With gentleness and positive reinforcement. The obedience becomes implicit: its not absent, its simply there in a natural state because the puppy is being rewarded to do the right thing. @kampanagroup1, sorry but that pup is learning all the basic commands.
The dog gets the food when it sits, and they say "sit". They're creating neural pathways while the dog develops. Believe it or not, while the dog learns at such an early age, they are much easier to train. Because remember, you can't teach an old dog new tricks :).
@CaniSport Windjammer2, again. Sorry about the typos! Have you worked with both G.S. and border collies? My last G.S. was from Germany just after the Berlin wall came down and allowed more interactions between breeders. Mostly schutzhund background. Best bitch I could have ever asked for! I've heard the B.C's need a lot of exercise and interaction. In town I have a fenced in yard but also have a rural place in Wisconsin for summers and weekends. Any thoughts?
@CaniSport Hmmm... Not sure what you mean by "Delete two times "Alpha"? Working with G.S for years I've seen the process of establishing "alpha" played out many times. As pack animals, dogs feel much more comfortable when the alpha is established. Sogs, like horses, actually seek a relationship with humans. By the way, was that you handling the border collie in the trials video? Great performance! My last G.S. passed away a few yesrs ago and I'm considering a Border collie!
I think the food is for the first few times. I think that with time this year, the dog can do without food because he has learned to do so by following the food. for training amateur going very well. May I ask how many months can be done training like this? I have aGerman Shepherd 45 days puppy. sorry for my English. I am Italian. tahnk you in advance.
I have a 6 week old male German Shepard and he just doesn't stop biting really hard.. And doesn't even listen to his name being called. But I guess he's still young?
So true. And store bought puppies many times come from puppy mills. There are some exceptions but to be safe when it comes to knowing what you're getting, and not supporting puppy mills directly or indirectly, it's best to steer clear of buying from pet stores. Oh these poor animals are caught in such a twisted world... :(
You know this is a road to animal abuse? Would you like someone squeezing your nose when you misbehave and let them do it until you cry?NO.I am reporting your comment. You should not own a dog if you are going to act abusive on it
Ralphie died about a month ago. He had tumor that would cost like 800 bucks to take out. Lol. he's gone so don't fret lady. He was one of like 5 dogs born on my cousins farm last year, so we can always get another.
Yeah I've got to agree with others when they say way too much food/treats... not to mention, mine was sitting and shaking at 7-8 weeks with no help from treats.
@TheWindjammer2 Its my better half who is working the BC's, and yes shes doing quite well. Her newest dog is the rottweilerpup on my latest videos. I am into schutzhund myself, mostly working as helper for primarily GSD's, rotts and malinois. There are many bias about BC's and their activity (we have two BC's and two rotties in the house). Truth is that if they are activated 8 hours each day, they will need it! Our two is sleeping most of the day, untill "mum" comes home ;)
Have you got any advice on the teething issue because I have a German Shepard and she's about 14 weeks old and she got a thing with biting any thin that moves like when I come home she just goes crazy at me. Funny but painful
i adopted my german shepherd puppy from an animal shelter, they are so amazing and smart! :)
Its best for pups to learn when they are young so he is at the right point!
forget the obedience... THAT Puppy of yours is the CUTEST GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPY I've ever seen!... Congratulations!
my GSD is 5 months old now, he is easily the best thing to happen to my life.
i love Germany shepherds. i miss mine so much :'(.
keep them happy and they'll love you a lit !
wow, significant connections being made for the puppy at such an early age, sit, lay with such positive reinforcement, great start for this dog
ohohohhh... I think german shepards are the cutest and the most intelligent dogs!!! When I see this I would cry!!! awwwwwwwwwwwwww
Agree
I have a little baby shepherd... he's amazing. It makes me want to have a whole field of them on a farm lol
Awesome start for this little guy. What a great job you are doing. Love to see puppies starting out WANTING to learn, using food as a positive reinforcement. What a cute puppy :) I have an 8 week old white gsd and have started at week 7 to train her...it takes a lot of patience :)
A very nice German Shepherd Puppy!
That dig is going to be huge...
its so wittle and cute!
Very nice!! I love watching positive reinforcement training at work. The puppy is adorable too and is learning so well! To the people who are commenting on the treats, you obviously don't understand the concept of positive reinforcement training and behavioural science. Loved this video!!

Sehr schöner hund :)

love it how they take something so not important seriously

so so handsome after cute
she was teaching him to walk next to her and sit next to her when she stops, its important when you want a dog to be fully trained
The dog gets the food when it sits, and they say "sit". They're creating neural pathways while the dog develops. Believe it or not, while the dog learns at such an early age, they are much easier to train. Because remember, you can't teach an old dog new tricks :).
best dogs
You can hear her saying "good sitz" "plots"
i think thats the point of using a german shepard .There able to learn commands quickly.their really intelligent
they are also 4th best guard dog in the world!

How in the world do you get them to lay down on command? If you hold food low to the ground, will they just lay down for you?
