  • Saturday, October 3rd 2020! Tessa and I took a road trip to Joseph, Oregon and backpacked into Ice Lake for a two night, three day trip. This video shows the highlights of trip, and the longer full version will be coming soon. What an awesome trip! For October, the weather was better than we could've asked for - minus some wind at night and during the days. The first day we hiked into Ice Lake from the Wallowa Lake Trailhead. We setup camp, and settled in for the night. The second day we summitted Matterhorn Peak - the second highest peak in the Eagle Caps! The views were top notch and one could literally see for miles all around. We hiked back down, and I even took a quick dip in the lake to cool off. If you jump into Ice Lake, you're technically jumping into Ice water right? We ended up taking off for the Trailhead at 7am the next morning. Overall this was a great end of the year trip! Stay tuned for the full video. Thanks for watching!

      Dirk Hey thanks Dirk - it was a pretty awesome place to backpack. That was our first time backpacking Oregon, and we’re hoping to go back next year!

      @@DannyJSchaefer yes! I've pretty much explored everything from eagle cap mountain and west entering through Two pan TH. But havent explored anything east of eagle cap. Im actually headed this weekend to do a few days of snowshoeing going out six mile meadows. Makes it convenient only being about 85 miles north of Enterprise.

      Right on man! So I take it you’ve done the entire Eagle Cap Loop then? It’s definitely an area I’d like to explore more. Have a good time snowshoeing, and thanks for the sub!

    Nice video! I dig the music you used. I have been using epidemic sound, any other good sites you have used?

      Hey man thanks for checking out the video and I believe for the sub! (Doesn’t always tell me who but I saw that I got one around the time you commented). I also use Epidemic Sound and haven’t really strayed from that so I don’t really have any suggestions. Looks like you have hiking/backpacking channel as well? I’ll check it out!

    I plan on doing the same trail this season. I have heard mixed things about walking the ridge over to Sacajawea Peak from the Matterhorn. Did you attempt this?

    • @DannyJSchaefer
      @DannyJSchaefer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s awesome! It’s a uniquely beautiful lake and trail. I did not attempt the ridge to get to Sacajawea Peak from Matterhorn.
      The climb to Matterhorn wasn’t too bad, but time didn’t allow for Sacajawea which appeared a little more technical. I believe the channel “Matt Cook Oregon” has a video of him walking that ridge to Sacajawea that I watched before we did this trip.

    Nice video, but wilderness principles never allow putting your tent so close to the lake (200 feet away please!) and it looks like you are scooping your water straight from the lake, which is also questionable in the West. Looks like you are Covid backpacking newbies. Please read up on do's and don't for backpacking.

      Greetings Ranger Rick and thanks for stopping by the channel. Thanks for the tip on the 200' distance. We do not advertise ourselves as being "professional backpackers" and I learn something new after each trip. I have been made aware of this rule since then, and attempt to stand by it to my best ability. I remember 90% of the campsites here being very close to the water, and there were other parties that camped in these spots as well. If you're going to stop by this video with your wilderness principles then I hope to see similar comments from you on the other Ice Lake videos on here as everyone camps in these spots. And as far as scooping water from the lake goes, I'll be sure to practice my best magical spells to lift the water up and into the sky and then have it gently drain into my pot. I was hiking/backpacking prior to Covid-19 and 2020. I realize that my time wasn't around 1940 as it was in the epitome of your hiking days so your expertise is much appreciated. I will be sure to read up on the do's and don'ts for backpacking.
