I think composition analysis is a good start to answering the question of who’s the greatest metal band, but there are more factors at play. Not just technical prowess but using it tastefully, overall heaviness, maybe even album sales and number of albums total. I would have to say Cannibal Corpse is definitely near the top right now. 15 albums deep and they still manage to make every album and every song different enough to stay interesting without traveling outside their genre. Now that’s commitment. I’m not gonna say speed should be a factor because wether you prefer fast or slow is too subjective. That’s why technical prowess. Sometimes being able to play impressive passages serves its purpose better when it stands out from simpler parts of a song. I feel like that shows that the musician writing the music is thinking about the listener’s experience a bit, and not just showing off for the sake of showing off. Now before you come out of the gate with a statement like, “this is the greatest metal band.” Provide a “here’s why” because there are a lot of subgenres of metal. Whatever criteria you use I would suggest taking your top picks from as many subgenres as possible and then maybe your next video could be about weighing them against eachother as objectively as possible. It’s a tough question to ask because it’s gonna be hard to not play favorites. In the end anyone probably would, but you can do your best presentation by stating upfront that your choice might be different from the viewer’s and that’s ok because this is “your” best metal band and they’re invited to pick their own and give as many reasons as you did. I think that’s the best approach because ain’t nobody gonna bother to do all that.

But if they do, good. fair is fair. Might even be interesting to get another perspective on it if they can present their rebuttal... in an at least somewhat mature way.

Maybe some of the harmonies (the intro and the middle section), but this is one of their most straight forward thrash songs (it's kind of an "evolved" version of Fight Fire with Fire that is basically an "evolved" version of the whole Kill 'Em All album), and Cliff was probably the least "thrash metal" guy in the band.
I would actually compare the main riff of Battery to the first riff of Metal Militia. Both are "skank beat" based riffs, and both are heavily based on the bluesy 1 b3 4 b5 scale degrees.

One of my biggest regrets: in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I was going to punk, hardcore, and metal shows at the Mabuhay Gardens, The Stone, The On Broadway, and “The OLD Waldorf”. I saw ads for shows at the Old Waldorf featuring an underground band called Metallica. The name called to mind the TV show “Battlestar Galactica,” and I for some reason assumed Metallica must be some lame LA hair metal band, so I passed up the chance to see early, pre-Ride-the-Lighting Metallica shows in an awesome intimate venue when they were young and hungry. After I finally heard about this amazing new band than combined the ferocious energy of hardcore punk with the technical skills of heavy metal shredders, I bought a 100th-generation, inaudible copy of Metallica’s demo cassette while waiting for the release of their first LP. As soon as I heard “Hit the Lights,” I new I had found my new favorite band. As the SF thrash scene exploded and became an international phenomenon, I was able to see bands like Exodus and Slayer in tiny clubs, lodge halls, and theatres, but I never had a chance to see Metallica up close and personal. I did, however, get a chance to meet James Hetfield when he was standing behind me in the audience to see Mötorhead at the Stone.

Considering I've been listening to them since I was 13 years old and I'm 47 now and it still gets me every time especially the live shit. I think I can say with pretty good confidence that they are objectively best metal band in the world. Maybe for all of time. They excel in every single area when you look at it there's no other bands to do that. And for anybody who's saying that Lars can't drum, the haters are merely a symptom of being the best. And if you think you can't drum and do just listen to and justice for all with drums only and let's see if you can do it. Not bad for a tennis player.

Writing credits Hetfield and Ulrich, one has to wonder if James was guided by his ears primarily, or how much theory he actually knows......and of course there's an incontrovertible proof that Cliff Burton was one of, if not THE best metal songwriters ever - had a massive influence on the development of the Metallica sound and IMO at least, made them what they are.
The greatest metal band of all time? Certainly a contender.....great analysis again Shred.

Not just the opening track, the whole album "Master Of Puppets" is the proof, this record will not be matched in a very long time... There are very strong challengers like "Powerslave" (Iron Maiden), "Rust In Pace" (Megadeth), "Reign In Blood" (Slayer), "Images And Words" (Dream Theater), "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy" (Symphony X), "Ghost Reveries" (Opeth), to name a few but MOP is untouchable.

I can't stand anything after the black album, and even the black album doesn't have the same repeat value as the first 4. It's just my taste. I'm not stuck in 80's thrash, I like the sound of Conquering Dystopia as an example of a modern metal a lot, but after Metallica released that stankin' pile of dung called Load/Reload/St.Anger I just couldn't take it anymore while during that time Megadeth continued to put out solid releases.
