Hi Martin. Do you have advice for preparing to remove the header bolts? I had 8 of 12 snap on a Boxster I had a few years ago and now I have a 98 3.4 Carrera which I'll have to remove the headers from fairly soon. Obviously the header flange prevents you adding any fluid to the threads , I was wondering about drilling a small hole to add fluid but think it might be a useless idea.

Thank you very much for this video. Before I remove my valve cover, can you tell me what size and pitch the all thread is that you used to hold the variocam solenoid in place with the camshafts? I want to make sure that I have that on hand and ready to go before I disassemble.

I used the Würth TimeSert on a snapped header bolt. It is an amazing tool and worked a treat.

Knowing the m96 is notorious for cracked heads, why is this not being mentioned or checked? Apologies in advance if I missed that in the video?

The only time I have seen cracked heads they have been oil and coolant mix, there were no such issues on this, so I didn't feel the need to check for it.

    hello
Do you mind in share the torque specs on the valve cover bolts, on the cam shaft journals, on the cam shaft sprocket and on the 3 small allen bolts that goes inside the head to the engine block
Also you mention a diagram from porsche for the head valve gasket
    thank you

I just get them from the factory manual. If you don't have it then email me, address in my info, and I can help you out.

This is awesome. So, where do you lock the crank before removing cams on each bank? I'm doing variocam chain guides, i currently have the engine out with bank 1's cams locked and the cover off

Great videos, do you ever skim the heads and If so do you use a standard head gasket or can you get a thicker one?

Hi Martin , I found your video very well made and it helped me understand the complexity of the 996 Engine . I have a 996 with x51 Option and trying to understand why I have suddenly what appears to be engine oil in the coolant. Any thoughts on how to identify the source of the problem would be most welcomed

Hi Robert, I have the same problem and I'm doing a leakdown test to hopefully get an indication of where the leak is coming from.

Hi Eric how many hours did it take you to remove engine and do head work and reinstall. About to try changing out a head on my 99

A great video, your facilities look exceptional, are you DIY trained or are you a Professional?

All DIY, the garage is in my office building, I'm an electronics engineer in real life but have been playing around with cars and engines for the last 30 years in my spare time.

Hi I would like your opinion on doing the work you have on your video with the engine in the car? From watching videos it seems a number of the so called super cars Engine removal is the best way to tackle most jobs!!

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Whilst it looks difficult and scary, taking the engine out and refitting it on these is pretty easy, if you have access to a lift. I really hate fighting my way around things in a confined space, I'm not sure you could actually do this with the engine in the car, it would probably be quicker in the long run to remove it.

    Hi Martin
You don't seem to be using the Porsche Auxiliary Chain Tension Tool 9599 that the manual recommends. Is it not necessary when adjusting the tension or is just loosening the tensioner enough
    Thanks for your video

I didn't have that tool, if I had it I would have used it, but I have read from many people who have done this work previously that it isn't really necessary.
