    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt that will happen. 1) I don't hide my preference for the Nidek/Santinelli edgers. 2) I don't actually have enough edging work to perform real testing. An edger is like a marriage. You won't know how things really are until you are a few years into the relationship. I've lost track but several of the edgers (Briot Weco maybe?) are the same just branded under different licenses. If you are seriously considering any model make them come and put on a show for you - push things and see how it does. John

    Where do you order new tools for your edger? Do you need to get them from the edger manufacturer or is there another company that sells them with the form already dressed in? Thanks!

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Best to get them from the manufacturer. So many different types and brands and years and models... They would also know if the wheel needs to be dressed before use. Excellent question by the way! I wouldn't be surprised if they are factory coated to reduce tarnish/rust and might need to be cleaned up first. I only did a wheel swap once on a Santinelli - it wasn't hard to do. John

    Hello, I have high index lenses with 1.74 thinning and -13 prescription in the right lens. I find with my optician, when the lenses are placed into a plastic frame, the frame itself appears to be scuffed around the bridge of the nose and outer edges. I assume this is from some degree of finishing, almost as if the lens has been in the frame and then edged. I have to complain and then have the frame replaced, however I was wondering if you could provide some insight into what may be causing this scuffing to frames? Thank you in advance.

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just a hunch but - 13.00 is quite high. That is going to leave behind a very thick edge which then has to be pressed by force alone into the plastic eyewire from the front of the frame. I'm sure that between heating/softening the frame and the thick edge it is catching in that area and causing the marks. It could be avoided with a heavy safety bevel, perhaps a light polish and some careful lens insertion, ( a step bevel if the edger can handle it). BUT - BUT, you are also extremely near sighted so you may well notice minute damage that others might not. But IMO no permanent scuff marks (damage) on a new frame is not really OK. John

    Hello Laramy, I got a few questions on your santinelli LE700
    1.- how long does it take to edge a single lens?
    2.-How reliable is the edging system (how many jobs you have to manually edge after the machine didn't do it accurately) since it's an entry model

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sergio, I can answer 1 of the 2 --- Depending on material any edger that uses wheels will take anywhere from 2 minutes to 7 minutes per lens. You have bevel, groove, flat, polish, safety bevel, slow grind - so many variables you can't put a single time on it. I can't say how the 700 performs over time, I only had that here in the studio for a few months. Where I worked we had back-to-back Santinellis running about 15 jobs a day every day and they were super accurate and super reliable too. Check with them - they JUST released a new model like last week! John

  • @MA-wy7cr
    @MA-wy7cr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the machine measure the curve of the lens so the bevel can follow the curve? Or does the bevel just go straight across?

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A high-end edger will do just that, yes. Many have additional features that allow you to further tweak it. The most modern robotic (MEI) can actually let you "tug" the bevel in place along the entire circumference! The reverse is true also a very inexpensive low end edger will cut pretty close to a neutral single axis bevel. John

    • @MA-wy7cr
      @MA-wy7cr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LaramyKOptical what about low end pattern edges that place the bevel in a single plane. Would the acetate frames tolerate this? Or would the lens end up flattening out the frame.

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MA-wy7cr It's anything can happen day! A warm soft acetate might conform to the flat bevel. A cold rigid one may have lens pop somewhere. Of course it depends on the frame curve - lens curve match to begin with. Sadly no way to predict any outcomes there.

    Hi i want to ask, at what mode do you (process) polish1.6 tribrid lens. Thanks :)

    • @LaramyKOptical
      @LaramyKOptical  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would all depend on which edger you have. You would need to get in contact with the company and ask. Different manufacturers call materials different things. Different edgers use different settings. If I had to guess I'd do a 1.6 set on hi-index. If you have no way of knowing for sure I'd experiment with a few cheap as you can find SV lenses. [Don't test on a $150 wholesale progressive] And/or be sure you are standing by to hit the STOP button if things don't look or sound right. Keeping in mind that Trivex will actually smoke when being roughed.
