- How do Transitions work? | Photochromic technology
Today we talk about the Transitions Gen 8 (Photochromic) lenses. They are transparent indoors but turn tinted when outoors
Quite commonly people mistake Transitions with Progressive, Multifocal or Varifocal lenses

Thank you! I'm 20 & have worn photochromic glasses for over 7 years now and literally none of my friends understand that or wear them, I guess I'm the only one. They just work and are cool.
Just got these glasses today. I did not know what to expect. Fell immediately in love with them. I have very light sensitive eyes and these glasses are just perfect
I’m really glad you set the expectation about them *not* changing in the car. This was a super helpful tip! I ended up getting a seperate pair of sunglasses with my prescription for this reason ❤
5:54 I got my first pair of transition lenses when I was 5 and still get them and love them to this day
I had to use photochromatic lenses 20+ years ago but the problem was that they needed long time to transition from dark to light or vise versa, so if you you get inside a dark room from outdoor you can’t see anything and you have to remove your glasses. The other downside was that they were not dark enough to cope with actual sunglasses. Therefore I prefer to use separate glasses for indoor and outdoor.
I wonder if today’s technology is more reliable concerning these two points.
they are! I just put in an order for transition lenses, and a big selling point is how it only takes 90 seconds for 95% of the color to disappear!! I assume it's similar to how a half-life works in that sense
You do know they have been improved in the last 20+ years, The Gen 8 are way faster and get darker.
Bro, full disclosure, I’m high, but your channel is d o p e
🤙 siiiiicckkk thanks!

Lmao same
I don't even need glasses idk why I'm here
Nice explanation, i'm currently using multifocals ( yeah 50 years old) and photochromatic.
And the frame has a maglock system to allow the addition of sun lenses (or yelow for night driving).
Btx my frame is dark green and the lenses turn green with UVs
that sounds quite beautiful!
I wish you would discuss the glass Photo Grey Extra lenses. Superior glass optics and visable light sensitive, not just UV and nearly impossible to scratch. Plus I used a pair for over 10 years (until cataract surgery) and they don't wear out like plastic lens photochromics. I have used Photo Grey Extra since the '70s. I found one opticion willing, and ordered them a few days ago.
Completely agree - I love my transitions - Wish they had transitions in contacts for astigmatism.
Completely agree! 😂
friend, you're done! I have astigmatism in one eye, I ordered it the other day, it will be ready in 10 days.
Your comment on photochromic lenses being an "elderly" thing is the complete opposite of my experience here in Canada. Everyone older than 35 I know dislikes them, mostly because they've only experienced them in their early days when they needed a lot longer to switch and would never be as clear as normal lenses. They simply never tried newer ones since then. Just like you though, I absolutely love mine. So much so that most of the people around me eventually switch to them when they get the chance, and that's a gen7 coating.
I’ve never been interested in optometry until I found your channel 😍😍
How flattering ! 😊
@@AntonioTheOptom I hope you keep posting interesting content 😊
I use the rapid transition lenses when I drive in my car and in the bus I drive for work, and I don’t have any issue with them turning dark. It didn’t used to be that way with transitions.
Really enjoyed this video. It was extremely helpful! I have transition lens but I felt like I also needed Sunglasses. For some reason I felt sunglasses have darker tint.
Yeah sunglass tints can go up to 92% absorbable so they can definitely be darker in that regard
I ride a motorcycle so my glasses are my windshields, cheers for the explanation!
Your presentation is receptive and you are great. Thanks for your great spirit.
🙏🙏
This is fascinating to me. Thank you for making this video
Transition lenses still turn dark in cars for a couple reasons. 1. at latitudes above 45° North(or south for the matter) the sun at noon is as low as 27° in the sky, which mean the lenses will receive more or less direct sunlight. 2. Snow reflect sunlight directly at the glasses, and in both cases the UV light overpowers whatever UV filter is on the windsheild. 3. UV filters and or tints may be ilegal in many states.
😯 didn’t know UV filters were illegal!
@@AntonioTheOptom filters and tint are totally illegal in Minnesota on windsheilds, the rear passengers and rear winsheild can be tinted, but only 50%
@@lazyidiotofthemonth weow 🙀
@@lazyidiotofthemonthUV filters aren't illegal tho. Even Minnesota isn't that stupid
Transition is a brand as you mentioned. For this reason, every manufacturer gives different names.
Yeah I feel Transitions is the brand everyone is familiar with and I would like to see it change!
Such a lovely Chanel, content is really interesting, I'm subscribing ! So interesting !! Thank you very much!
Thank you for the information about cleaning the lenses.
I loved the video. Good job and you also have a great voice.
Thank you ! 😁😁
Started to wear glasses 4 years ago and I chose a photochromic lenses my thoughts are they are a combination of sunglasses and a glasses, the downside is when you go inside it takes too long to go back to normal glasses
My view is that it will only get better from here! 😀
@@AntonioTheOptom I enjoyed wearing photochromic lenses until I switch to AR coating. Should’ve kept photochromic lenses as my new glasses that way I don’t have to switch to sunglasses
@@josephdonoway Yeah its always hard when you prescription changes and the new ones dont have transitions thats annoying
Do house windows normally have a UV filter of some sort built-in? I have some Gen8 Transition lenses which don't darken if I look through my windows on a sunny day.
Curious to see an updated comparison between the latest Essioor Transitions technology from vs ZEISS Photofusion X technology.
I only get the transition xtraactive lenses because they will darken slightly more behind a car windshield, and they get darker outside than standard transition lenses.
Oooooh keen to test this out myself!
Hi Antonio, great content! What model of glasses are those? Moscot Miltzen ? Or Oliver Peoples?
I just had my transitions gen8 amber last month and people who wear gray photochromic look at me in disbelief and was wondering what kind transitions i was wearing :D. Anyway I am looking forward to try Sapphire/Amethyst, as colors work superb during cloudy mornings. Mine didn't look so good with prevencia bec of purple glare and obvious yellow tint when indoors, wish I had paired Amber with Sapphire 360 UV.
I love the amber colour! I’ve also had prevencia on my glasses once too and it gave off a pretty harsh purple reflection which I didn’t particularly enjoy 😂
How much per pair of lenses
@@exiacookies347 depends on where you buy them I guess 🤷🏼
@@AntonioTheOptom are you use amber colour in this video?
I like grey because its neutral.
I'm gonna make a new glasses with trans 8, too. Just wondering, should I change the eyesight since I've use this prescription for several years, though my eyesight have changed.
Yeah best to get an updated one especially if it’s been more than 2+ years
Here in the US, most in-store and on-line Optical dispensers will not honor a Rx that is more than 2 years old. I'm a mature adult and I'm really happy I DID get my eyes examined back in April of this year. Actually improved my NEAR vision so that I can once again use my distance glasses [for driving] and as computer glasses as well.
I m getting Specsavers reaction lenses soon im excited 🎉
My transition lenses get very dark when I tested them on my home windowsill. What’s up with that? I thought glass blocked UV? Do they also respond to visible light spectrum?
I like your eyeglasses. Where did you get them? Nice video by the way. Very informative.
Quick question, so i went yesterday to do my eye exam i felt like the guy was kinda rushing anyhow when I ordered them i asked for transition on them... If i was to take the glasses a few days from now if my eyes weren't to adjust to the new lens, and they had to re do it, would they also have to redo the transition meaning they'll charge me again for it??
Hello Antonio,i would like to know what is the brand of your cristal glasses please?
I really like it.
Thank you
Thank you! They are from Bailey Nelson!
@@AntonioTheOptom tank you my friend
Thanks for the info. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Love it 👍👍👍
🤙
I’ve got the gen 8 too! Emerald green. The best colour I think. But I want to know what type of coating u have on yr lenses. I only have anti scratch and glare. I use to use Hoya sensity with diamond coating. Is there such a coating with essilor lenses. I miss the resistance I got from the diamond coating. Essilor is great but I think the Hoya lenses are better. Just my opinion
I also have anti scratch and glare! I would love to try out some new coatings too. But paying for all of these new lenses would break my bank! 😂 but when I get my hands on them I’ll make sure to review it for ya!
@@AntonioTheOptom ha! That's why the diamond coating includes everything for a single price. Not expensive! Anti scratch, glare, smudge, water, and dust! The best ever!
very helpful info, thanks. By the way, what glasses are you wearing? I love them :)
edit: are they Bailey Nelson model Lars?
They are the Tyler’s not Lars 😂 my head is too big for the Lars although I would love to try them
Can u put a link please of where i can purchase them online? And the model of your glasses
Thanks
I bought it from a physical Bailey Nelson store in AUS, and the frame I have is the Tyler
Please don't stop what you do....!!
😂 okay
What brand is your glasses! I like the style with the dark transition lens.
Bailey Nelson!
@@AntonioTheOptom Cool thanks!
Informative 👍!! Have been using Transitions for a long time now . Currently its the Varilux that's on my glasses and am using progressive lenses. For the first time tho in years, I noticed that after 4 yrs, the coating has started break at the bottom part. I wonder ...does photochromic lenses have a life?🤔🤔 Have been using microfiber cloth and lens cleaners!
I would say after 4 years some wear and tear is to be expected, also coatings can be thermally impacted so extreme hot and cold environments could damage them! 👍
@@AntonioTheOptom thank you!😊
Thanks so much, Antonio!
Amazing TH-cam channel for me as an ophthalmology residents!
Antonio, Could you please explain in a longer video the main difference between the different tinted glasses ? And what is the main difference between the different tinted colours?
I mean, when should I use yellow tinted glass for example?
Yellow tints are a controversial one, think vision scientists are still a little divided on their consensus whether it has beneficial use for everyday activities. They help a few that I have spoken too but the science is a bit muddy
Where can I get the frame you got?
My son no longer wear transitions and and my eyes now and currently focus better in dim light (without glasses). They took my sons eyesight as well as mine and my daughter's.
05:54 - So, I'm one of guy, who had this type of lenses when I was a kid in 1995-2000. That was annoying that I was blind for a while after entering building and I had to wait to see again... or take off and wait ;)
Ur are so polite..thumbs up and subscribed!
Thanks Mei Sama! 👍
good info, thank you for sharing it.
Quick question how long do the lenses last in terms of years?
Which color were you wearing at the beginning of the video? Brown or Amber?
Brown!
Hi.. How can I make my car windshield photochromatic without using films
There is other companies that make similar photochromic lenses such as Zeiss Photo Fusion.
Thanks for contributing! 😃
Are tglasses still like this or they updated
Hi Antonio, I'm a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Ottawa, and I'm looking to design a pair of manually adjustable lenses. Would you be kind enough to let me know if there is any technology like this on the market? Thanks!
Make video sir of different colors of transition in POV so i can choose the right color
hi, where did you buy your eyeglasses frame??
Can these kind of eyeglass can have optic grades too or not?
Sure they can
Thank you. I wanted to know how the transition works.
You’ve come to the right place! 👍
I wanted these but one of my team said they were for old people... for me I associate them with expensive lenses as they are an added extra and although the ‘oh just get a pair of sunglasses’ but I’m much like you and don’t want to carry two pairs...
Transitions are for everyone 😂
Helpful review. Getting mine in a week. 😊
Glad I could be of help! 😁

@@AntonioTheOptom Thanks!
Speaking from experience, I went through several years (decades?) of not wearing sunglasses. I think my vision was affected, and certainly the delicate skin around the eyes now have Millions of tiny wrinkles .. 😐
Thanks for your piece of advices
My optician suggested that my lenses should be photochromic and AR. I’m myopic ( -3.25 in my left eye, -2.25 in my right eye, I can’t remember the rest of my prescription lol ) and astigmatic. Also how should I take care of them as to surpass its maximum shelf life ?
Best to always use a micro fibre cloth to clean, never lay down your glasses faced down, never take your glasses off with one hand and avoid scratching them with things like sand, keys etc
@@AntonioTheOptom that was fast lmao thanks for replying to someone on the other side of the world
@@STRANGELOVE652 oh the internet :) what would we all do without it 😂
I forgot to ask but are transitions lenses the standard brand sold by opticians ? I wasn’t given any type of choice
@@STRANGELOVE652 it’s the most popular photochromic lens option for sure, some optical practices like to deal with the brand they are most familiar with
I need a glasses to my evening computer courses because after looking for laptop at night it effects my sleeping 😔, I have long distance glasses and reading glasses,
my question is blue light blocking lenses more effective or anti reflective lenses for computer use?
Thank you
For sleep probably go with blue light

Just use sunglasses. Trust me. Its the best

3:25 When I was in 8th grade (this was 83-84 school year) I had to take a typing class. The class was amazingly boring and I hated every year long minute of it. I was thinking the entire time that I was never going to be a secretary. What use would I have for typing?
On top of that the teacher for the class was terrible I finished the class vowing to never touch a typewriter again with a bare minimum passing grade, having learned nothing.
At the end of that following summer my grandmother (who lived with us) passed away and my parents bought a very expensive PC.
Fortunately my parents also got a typing skills teaching program that was just slightly more fun than the class and it did improve my typing. I have used those typing skills more or less every day for the last 13880 days.
What the hell does a 13 year old kid with no internet access know about the future?
Good video, thanks! Would like to use that music on a video. Mind me asking where it’s from?
I got it from Artlist!
@@AntonioTheOptom Thanks! :)
which color is your used in this video ?
How do I get transition lenses?
Am myopic and currently on my glasses 👓
I live in Southern Nigeria 🇳🇬
I’m not sure where you could get them in Southern Nigeria sorry! But you could ask around to see if your local glasses shop ‘photochromic’ lenses or if they supply Essilor lenses 😀
if cleaned correctly how fast does the effect deteriorate over time?
Just got my own reaction lens pair of glasses today. 🇬🇧
What your thoughts on Zeiss Photofusion!
I have yet to try them!
From my usage experience..photofusion max darkness level is a tad lighter than the gen 8..but the indoor clarity is its advantage over the transition..
Photofusion's hue colour is also quite different compare to the transition due to different proprietary chemical..the grey version is a bit blueish/purplish compare to the gen 8 grey with its a bit olive green hue..this will make the photifusion contrast level a bit better than the transition but the transition's hue will make it better for the glare reduction..thats my 2 cents on these 2 photochromic lenses
Do i need to use progressive lens even if i have healthy vision ?
That depends on a lot of things. Health is irrespective of the need of multis
2:15 did you ever make a video about multi focal lenses?
I’m supposed to put the “Transitions”technology on my eye prescription for years. I have diabetes, and I want to protect my eyes from the sun. I live in CA and it’s very sunny here🤷🏻♀️🌝🤓🛡
Good idea! 👍
The place I just ordered my glasses from said the transition I got will change in the car, but I've heard others say that's not possible.. Thoughts?
Transitions are activated by UV so if your car has a UV tint they will not work. There are also what’s called Transitions Drivewear which is supposed to work in the car but I haven’t actually tried them myself so I can’t tell you for sure how they work 😀
I have transitions in my glasses and I guess they are a newer kind because when I drive even with windows up they’ll stay slightly tinted, just not like being outside
@@dudders___1684 could be the Transitions Xtractive lenses
@@AntonioTheOptom I wasn’t sure I just told them i wanted transitions lenses in my glasses this time, they didn’t really tell me what kind they were and I got them this year. Is there a way to tell by how they look or anything?

are photochromic expensive to produce? i've seen inexpensive glasses with photochromic qualities *unsure if it's the actual tech.
Could also be a brand thing too ! 👍
You don't mention how long it takes to transition from dark to light when you walk into a unlit room
My transistion lenses go dark in the car. They told me its a newish option if you drive a lot.
They defo work even on my tinted gte.
Do Photochromic lenses have bluelight filter?

I just bought my first Transition lenses.
Now I'm always chasing the sun
I always saw them as dad glasses… that said, I’ve worn em since I was 10 haha I wanted to be as cool as my dad. ;)
The tape thing surprised me
I've never heard anyone call it sellotape before I live in the usa and ive only ever known it as Scotch tape
Kinda mad that the glasses store didn’t tell me u can’t clean these with normal rags or ur shirt…. No wonder mine look all scratched and don’t tint very well

Brown or gray?
