Former Cincinnati Bengal and sports commenter Solomon Wilcots joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the Bengals week 1 loss to the New England Patriots.
It was a horrible opener for the Bengals who fell to the New England Patriots 16-10. Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense never got anything going and when they did they had a costly turnover on the goal line.
Turnovers were a deciding factor in the Bengals loss with the Bengals losing the turnover battle 2-0. The defense played well enough to win but the missed tackles were a big weakness and when they needed a stop with two minutes left the missed tackles reared their ugly head.
It's another slow start to the season and the Bengals will look for a big upset against the best team in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs.

As for beating KC in Week 2? This hurts to say;; NOT A CHANCE. Well, let me put a caveat in there, or two: IF Mikey Skin Flint Brown, the worst owner in the NFL, pays Jamar Chase, secures him for a long term contract (3 years, at least!!), that would be a great start, that would show up on the field. The wild card is the chicken shit non tacklers. Wilcots made ingenious remarks here; "B-I-G doesn't spell MAN" and spoke of the heart. We've got some little Lord Fauntleroys out there
on defense, acting like it's flag football!! Swiping at a runner's upper arm? WTF?!?
Something went SOUR since last season. It must have something to do with management. These things come from the top down...always.
Only a Mike Brown could take an almost sure thing team like the current Bengals (which should be a dynasty team) and manage them like Herb Tarlek from WKRP IN CINCINNATI. Good comment, man.

There was absolutely no excuse to lose this game. You had months to plan for this and scheme things up, and this is what you roll out with!? The patriots told you what they were going to do! I get things weren’t working the first quarter but you make adjustments! It’s like they just stopped trying… there was no fight. I get there’s distractions with ja’marr and the contract, and tee and Hendrickson not getting what they wanted either, but you have to get it together somehow someway. I’m shocked that they couldn’t get this done with ja’marr. Do you really think it’s worth your best player to be upset all season long?

Tanner Hudson was not celebrating! He was trying to move around the defenders to get the ball across the goal line. Granted, I’m not saying it was smart, but he wasn’t celebrating!

I’m from Cincinnati, but live in Tampa. I’ve noticed that ownership for the BUCS takes care of their players and always pay those that deserve to be paid. That’s why their teams are always together.
Sad thing is not too many people understand this concept
We have a coaching issue, constantly unprepared, poor play calling, poor O line play AGAIN. Mike needs to step up and demand better
O line is NOT the problem dude. Start listening to Lap and Solly more please.
We only run shotgun and focus pn passing. Makes it easy for defenses to pin the ears back.

We got unlucky with the two turnovers at the end of the day. If Hudson scores that TD it's a completely different ball game. We'll bounce back in the long run
Head coach should give up play calling and let the OC handle that. Same schemes from last year and year before. Get the QB more under center. I’m concerned.
Totally agree with Solomon. I blame this loss on the front office. These contract disputes are a team distraction. If the Bengals can't pay Tee, can't pay Joe Mixon, and can't pay TB because the Bengals need to pay Chase, THEN PAY CHASE!!!
They running replacement level receivers out there who cant get a yard of separation in a scheme that needs players to win their routes and we're surprised the offense isnt good? Smh

Amen Solomon! The practice policies around the league have made players and coaches SOFT! The way Zac handles preseason games is quite simply, stupid! In the old days, when guys were getting played a whole lot less, and contracts weren't guaranteed, they were out on the field in practice. They were in the games, all preseason. They didn't play in fear of injury because they were too busy FIGHTING FOR THEIR JOBS! Money ruined this game! Owners have to say; "I'm paying you really well. Get your ass out there!"

Instead of debating surviving the ground why not actually point the finger at the vanilla scheme and effort and poor preparedness (all COACHING issues) or maybe why mike brown left $52m in unspent cap space since 2019. Wonder how joe mixon is doing 🤔
That's what I was saying about the TD that the refs finally admitted that they screwed up. He crossed the line, made sure he had the ball by falling on his back inbounds with the ball on his chest, a then turned over, and it was too hard to definitely see what happened when he did that. It would surely be a TD if it was a running play, or if another team were playing. I never see this call on other teams.

This is why us Bengal fans hate preseason. The first team never gets reps and we lose the first 4 games of the season. Then our star players still get hurt! WTF 😒
I agree with Solomon on the rules being too petty. At the same time, that is no excuse. Mike knows the current rules and has to keep possession on that play. And there is so many reason the Bengals lost that game outside of that play.
Im not worried one bit. Its the NFL so i expect them to lose sometimes even when favored. Id rather them struggle early than in November/December. Dont forget injuries haven't come into play yet. Im just glad football is back.

I don't know the facts or details of this contract situation between chase and the brown family but I think both sides need to come together and just go ahead and get this thing done now. Chase wants to be here. Most fans i think we love chase and want him here. I think the organization wants him here. Find a way to get it done. This has been a great team with high character and culture. Don't let this effect that for both sides, ja'marrs side and the organizations side.
You must survive the ground with possession on a Catch. In this case, the ball came loose when he hit the ground.
Coach needs to have this team disciplined and ready to go. They need to play starters in preseason and have better preparation! Also get a offensive Coordinator and let them call the plays Zac Taylor

Zach needs to play these guys in the preseason for more than a drive. 1 quarter the first game, a half the next game and maybe a drive in the third game. There is no way possible we should’ve lost this game 🤦🏾♂️. I mean this was embarrassing from start to finish. Tired of these slow starts to start the season
How about actually analyzing the scheme and decison making (still making boneheaded end of game mistakes year six), like throwing 2yd flats 15times in a row when the sticks are 5y away
To be fair Chase didn’t practice besides a couple practices, despite being under contract for 2 more years, so not everything right.

Dan Pitcher is a complete zero at the offensive coordinator position. How come every other team in the country, NFL and College, the offense coordinator actually has a purpose, but with the Bengals the OC means nothing
