Often people ask us how many days it takes for the hair to grow after a hair transplant. This is a very common question. A lot of people expect results immediately after a hair transplant. They feel that their hair will start growing soon after a hair transplant. They get disappointed when this doesn’t happen. They also feel that their hair transplant has failed and they are not getting the desired results.
So let’s see how long it takes to see the results of a hair transplant. The hair transplant is a process in which your hair follicles are extracted from one area of your scalp and implanted in the bald patches of your head. These follicles are extracted from the donor area or the so-called permanent hair zone. The follicles are extracted using either FUE or FUT. In FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation, a 6-10 inch strip of skin is removed from the back of the scalp. Around 500-2000 small grafts are extracted from this strip.
The number and type of grafts depend on the type, quality, colour and size of your hair. FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction is another technique used for hair transplants. This is a recent and advanced method in which individual follicles are extracted instead of strips.
If you get an FUE procedure, your scalp will be shaved during the surgery and individual hair follicles are extracted from the scalp.
Both of these procedures are quite similar. In both the procedures, after the grafts are extracted, small holes or sits are made in the recipient area for implanting the grafts. The surviving grafts grow for 2 or 3 weeks and then may shed. This is called shock loss.
The stress or the shock of the hair transplant causes the hair follicles to shed.
This lets us know that the recipient area has accepted the hair roots. Only the shaft of the hair falls and then grows back in 2/3 months, this is very natural. Some patients get worried about the shock loss. But you have to remember that hair fall after a hair transplant is very normal, so don’t worry.
After 3 months, the hair starts growing continuously. In fact, the growth is approximately 40 % in the first 6 months. After 6 months, good results are visible and 50-60% hair follicle growth is seen. For the hair to grow completely, it takes around 9-12 months.
That is why it takes at least a year to see the final results of a hair transplant. It will definitely take time to see the complete result after a hair transplant.
To get an overall good result and preserve your native hair your surgeon will prescribe minoxidil and finasteride. Though these medicines have no role in the growth of the transplanted hair, they preserve the non-transplanted hair and maintain the overall density of the hair.
They may also recommend vitamins, mineral supplements. Have patience and don’t be disappointed if your hair takes time to grow. You will definitely see results in a year. Shedding and regrowth are part of the hair transplant recovery process.
It is very important to be patient. But if you see any unusual signs like excessive bleeding, grafts falling out then contact your surgeon immediately!
In rare cases, the body rejects the grafts and this will cause your surgery to fail. So you have to take care and be patient. Your post-operative care will also greatly influence the success of the surgery. The results of the hair transplant depend on various factors like the grade of your hair loss, the surgeon's experience, the clinic’s infrastructure and the post-op care.

Thanks for sharing the information. I had a transplant (FUE) in April 2019 of 3200 grafts. The front and the middle scalp was covered. But it’s been almost 10 months and I still see less density. Should I wait for another 2-3 months to see the results or should i consult some other doctor?

What about shock loss? I had a 2nd hair transplant 4 months ago.I had graft placed in my crown area but I started to loose native hairs in my crown area 3-4 weeks after transplant.
