Started Watching the first match at midnight in Germany, damn this was great! Going to update this comment when I get around watching the other ones but holy God-Emperor on Terra Noggano gave us an awesome first game! 2:30AM, nice and solid second game by Isildur, very well executed though Noggano held his ground longer than I expected. Really wondering now who will prevail, the constant aggression or more careful unit preserving playstyle... 9:00 AM and I am a bit sad for Noggano, Isildur is seriously hammering him with his flawless, early aggression style. The map definitely suits him there too. He knows that if he gives Noggano time he can recover, as we saw in the first game. Looking forward now to the last 2 matches. 10:55AM, very sad! Was rooting for Noggano the whole time but damn, Isilidur is so incredible persistent. Congrats to him!
thanks for the coverage, ive been getting into coh2 recently, coming from aoe2 hd XD its definitely interesting, especially learning to take into account the time it takes to reinforce squads, retreat and heal, and send new squads up from the edge of the map lol since with aoe2 ofc, usually you can just build a military building and then start spawning troops from it right there on the battlefield, which makes reinforcement and pushing much more fast paced than here, at least until you get a forward position established
This is an amazing tournament organized by you guys. I gotta say I much appreciate the lack of osstroopen every single fucking game so good job on that. Would prefer some more factions but still a great best of 7! edit: any reason why we don't see OKW?
OKW's in a bad spot. The infantry are too weak, too expensive and/or too veteran level reliant. The Flak Halftrack is cheaper and performs better than the Luchs, despite being a very weak vehicle in its own right, so the light vehicle phase is not only predictable, but isn't all that strong. OKW also doesn't have proper artillery; the walking stuka has a recharge time that's too long for 1vs1, especially when it's extremely easy to dodge. The penetration of the Raketenwerfer is way too low. The moment a KV, Pershing, IS, or UKF heavies show up, OKW will struggle to fight them. Panthers are too expensive, and against Allies with a heavy tank and AT guns, the Panther will struggle to do anything. The main guns of OKW tanks are also too unreliable, missing way too many shots and failing to do the damage they need in the small windows they have for an engagement. Furthermore, the armour of the OKW tanks are constantly progressing towards irrelevance with each balance update. Finally, the tanks of OKW cost too much, both in manpower, fuel and pop cap. Yet their performance has been nerfed to the point where they can't reliably dive and make the plays that they need. OKW feels like low-key Panzer Ace every game. You can't afford to throw away your tanks, but you're too afraid to use them because they're not lethal like Shermans or cheap like a T34. Just like an iMac is a laptop on a stick; an OKW Panzer IV often feels like a glorified MG42 carrier. Sometimes, its main gun delivers, but it's way too inconsistent until you reach vet 4 or 5. Allied tanks have an easier time wiping squads, and are cheap enough to be spammed and replaced upon a loss. The balance and the whinging by the Allied player-base have made OKW games a really hard one to play.
@@gamerpriestt Fair enough, 6 man squads need burst damage, from a unit like Panzerwerfer or arty. Double Le.Ig struggles against a decent Soviet player, and Volksgrenadiers have neither the staying power and utility of conscripts or the level of DPS of most other units. And Obsersoldaten, while neither vastly superior in DPS, resilience or utility to Guards, Shock, Paras or Rangers, Obersoldaten cost the most to reinforce, rank amongst the most expensive, come too late and clog up your pop cap. You always cry a little on the inside when your 0 skill opponent EZ wipes a retreating Ober while their 6 man elite squads never has to worry about being wiped, unless you're stomping them hard. Then they complain like brats when you win a game by a narrow margin. Most people on the higher level agree that balance has gone bad, but nobody ever voices their opinions because they're either: not heard, or they have to deal with ignorant forum warriors.
I'd say the primary reason for not seeing much OKW (or USF) is because Ostheer and the Soviets are very good at the moment, and in that capacity these factions are more reliable because they have everything available stock. The EFA are more versatile than the WFA as they have all the necessary tools (mortars, HMGs, flamethrowers, rocket arty, etc.) available in their core armies. If the stats (coh2stats.com/stats/month/1617235200/1v1/wgerman?statsSource=top200) are a decent indication OKW is doing fine in 1v1 automatch (49,4% wr) and is doing very good in 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 automatch (55-56% wr); players just seem to prefer Ostheer in tournaments because the faction is more well rounded and reliable compared to OKW now for tourney play.
@@Sander3101 I agree that due to the nature of team games we see OKW and Wehrmacht function a bit better than they would in 1's. Regarding stats, I'm always a bit careful around them in CoH2. I'm not too sure how these numbers were compiled. We don't necessarily know players' ranking matchup or if they're testing a new build/not playing seriously. Due to the extremely exponential nature of player skill in elite coh2, where players like Asha and Isildur stomp others even from rank 100 and below, it's no surprise that if we look at those statistics, we don't get the full picture. Because the majority of their (top 20 globals) opponents (the rest of the ladder) simply can't win against them regardless of faction choice. All I can say is that having played for thousands of hours now, and experienced matches against 50's and top 20's, OKW isn't in a good place on an intuitive, level in 1vs1. Can I win consistently against sub 300 on the leaderboard? Yes. But I would chalk it up to experience difference, and not good faction balance. And when you consider that top players literally play like "60+ hours recently" on Steam, you can't help but wonder... I do agree with you on utility. More or less what I said, but phrased differently. Core utility like arty for example, and again, armour or infantry are simply not up to scratch for OKW. My concern and frustration with balance is that instead of regular small updates, CoH2 balance is done with irregular BIG patches. That's just not ideal. As a result, units like the Tiger get double nerfs; to both AOE and Accuracy for example, instead of a single nerf to either and further adjustments if necessary. And now, everyone be wondering why it can't hit shit, or why if it does... nothing happens. But I'm more concerned that it performs like garbage while still charging the user their entire game's resource saving and their hopes and dreams for a clutch. Allies buy KV2s, Pershing and Crocs for a clutch. But no, if you buy a King Tiger, you got to pray that the map's steepness and inclines don't block a third of all shots fired or cause another third to miss their mark! And let's not forget how easy it is to destroy the game's most expensive tank with comparatively little effort.
Noganno has choked so hard in the three finals he's been in, he plays way worse when tilted and sometimes surrenders early. He's really got to work on his mental game and endurance.
I think getting rid of sandbags in tournament rules is boring. Players that are able to play defensive with entrenchments and wire, etc in a fast paced elite level game are some of the most interesting to watch since the aggressive playstyle is so much more straight forward. Of course, we rarely see the kind of barb wire usage I saw in CoH 1 anymore, seems like these days it basically amounts to people building sandbags or not building them. Instead of the barbed wire, medic bunker and mines we got in CoH 1, it's just sandbags vs sandbags. I wish they had just made sandbags work like CoH 1 sandbags that must be built in segments.
Probably a bit late for this, but the Europe at War mod adds a bunch of Africa maps and even changes faction doctrines depending on the map. British have a Desert Rats doctrine for example that isnt from vanilla.
p4s are the crucial unit to wehrmacht, greandiers and paks already ovberperform in kiting, with the p4 you get a unit which can stop pushed from tanks and infantry alike to keep the enemy in kiting distance
