I was ten years old and remember this vividly. I remember cattle floating down the river and houses smashing into Walnut Street bridge. We were one of the last cars to cross that bridge. I remember watching the water flow over the concrete retaining walls than work its way up to the intersection of our house and being forced to leave as water approached the house. It affected us for years afterward. The gnats for the first few following summers were horrible!

We lived in the hills between Campbell and Savona so we only had rain. My youngest brother was born June 22, 1972 in Corning hospital. The next day they were sent home to make room for Flood victims. My Dad was the town superintendent of Thurston so he was very busy with the clean up.

In the Susquehanna River down in Waterville PA, a whole cabin store floated down the river knocking down a near bridge, causing the water to rise higher flooding the whole 4,000 population town of Jersey Shore PA

I was working for a cable contractor in Elmira at the time of the flood. When the water went down we still had to put up cable in all the devastation and mud. I remember finding a class ring halfway up a telephone pole in a crack.

I don't think anyone who was around at that time would ever forget Agnes and her damage. Elmira never recovered.

I have a couple of the 45 rpm records of this song and I remember well the flood; We lived on Gaines St. and got 3 feet of water on the 1st floor; We had no 2nd floor.

I was 9 when it happened. I had relatives in the Corning Northside and the water was 8 ft just below the Erie station off Sly Ave. The 45 is around somewhere but it changed the entire landscape forever, plus it took over 50% of the population with it. In 50 years Corning was close to 20000. Now it's just over 10000. Elmira, Binghamton, Olean, Wellsville, all of the Southern Tiers population diminished significantly. I can see the original landscape of Corning in my head where what was where in the city.

I was living in Bethesda, MD, but my parents and brother were living in Elmira. A dear family friend had a fatal heart attack while trying to save important papers in his office downtown. Such a personal tragedy and catastrophic flood.

juanita Cicora all we have are two prisons with inmates that brought their lowlife families with them who chased elmirans out of Elmira--I still live the house I grew up in- in a neighborhood where you could leave your doors unlocked as a kid and walk to the store without your parents holding your hand if you didn't have to worry--not anymore R.I.P. Elmira--since 1972 they've been telling us Elmira is coming back, no it's not

I lived through this living on 2nd Street. It was not much, but I was young just 14. Hauled much smelly mud out of our basement and it reached our first floor by 3 inches so we ripped out the hardwood floors. Life goes on and man is resilient!

I was jus' a youngster at the time. But I remember the muddy water all over the place. My dad took us around the area in a '65 ford 4x4. We couldn't go very far b/c some of the roads were closed b/c of Agnes flooding.

Great to see this song and an excellent video posted on TH-cam! I'm pretty sure I still have this 45 somewhere. I remember watching helicopters take people to safe ground as they flew over our house on 2nd Street. Good thing we moved from our old place on Grey Street in '71 or we'da been underwater like a bunch of my relatives.

Thank you so much for posting! We had the '45' (I was 12), and it's around my house SOMEWHERE - was searching for last night, in order to play at the "sculpture lighting and launch" event down at the river last night (played guitar and sang - also couldn't locate my collection of RIVER SONGS!, so, much improvising...). Intending to improvise on this one, but forgot all about it when I got there!:):):) PL&U! - Danny Maloney

What is the chord progression for this song? I'd like to cover it to try and raise more funds for this great city.
