Chaque instrument est défini, en harmonie avec les autres, portant l'oeuvre à un point de perfection rarement atteint. Les interprètes m'étaient inconnus, c'est décidé : j'achète le disque. Bravo.
The Pre- and Post-WW1 Roussels were stylistically miles apart from each other but this composition from 1925 reveals a tenuous link between the two. I first heard it on an LP with pieces for similar instrumentation by Debussy and Ravel and recall thinking its edging towards 1930s modernism seemed out of place. Nowadays, however, its occasional agitated edginess makes perfect sense as a complement to earlier 20th Century French works for flute, harp and strings.
