Citizen has always had some hidden gems, and over the last few years they've started really killing it with their new releases, particularly with mechanical watches they somewhat neglected before.
I think Citizen is highly under-rated as a watch company. Seiko could learn a thing or two from them about build quality and QC. And their high-end paper dials are exquisite. This watch is a no-brainer for me. Definitely worth considering.
Seikos problem is that they have way to much products. They began to see that problem and started cutting off a lot of models. It's like Seiko has it's own favourites. There are watches like the Alpinist reinterpretation where they go crazy on the specs and the QC is on point. Then they have some other Prospex-models they don't care about. It's not even a thing about pricepoint. There are some 2000 dollar watches from Seiko with bad QC and models like their diver-reinterpretations are flawless. The Sumo has way better finishing than the normal turtle. I think it's good for them that they step up in price, reduce their catalouge and offer better products. They really understood their own faults from recent years.
Citizen doesn't get the credit they deserve. I own 5 and I have yet to encounter any of the notorious QC issues that Seiko is known for. Also, this dial is stunning. Absolutely love it.
Citizen doesn’t get the credit, cause most of their interesting watches are not being offered outside of Japan. And the watches they offer here in Europe are mostly non mechanical, big and pretty uninteresting. So yeah, I don’t think they deserve more credit.
I mean, I have 6 Seiko's with 0 QC issues so that's not saying much. This is a beautiful watch though and I can appreciate it without slagging off another brand
I'm happy to see Citizen stepping up their game here. A lot of people have lost enthusiasm for Seiko in the last few years so it's great to have a quality alternative.
That Citizen is way nicer than I expected, even compared to the thumbnail image. The unique dial, hands and case finishing all add up to an impressive piece. The silver dial probably looks like the surface of the moon. 👍🏻
I own the NB1050-59A, which has a white dial with a slight silvery complexion. The stock bracelet was useless (male end links, two micro adjusts and 19mm as well), but after putting it on a Strapcode superfine mesh bracelet, it exudes more of a vintage King Seiko vibe. Very simple and elegant piece. Citizen also offers black and blue dial variants of the NB1050 line--these are great alternatives to the SARB for those who are interested.
I own the black dial as well. One of the best bang per buck watch out there. Crazy specs for the money and I like the bracelet. I am a bracelet guy so the 19mm doesnt matter to me - it wont leave the bracelet. The male endlinks are a plus in my book, because a 38mm is a small watch and it makes it wear better on my wrist (that obviously depends on wrist size). It has solid links and endlinks, it is sized with pins and collars (which imo is superior to just pins and equally easy to size in this case due to the collar being on the middle links and not on the outter), a milled clasp, etc. It could have more micro adjustments holes or at least half links for sure. And the clasp could be better finished on the inner part - upon close inspection you can see the harsh finishing on the inside of the scissored milled parts (a small sandpaper can fix it rather easily tho). But still it is a great bracelet for a watch that costs less than 500 bucks.
@@MeTaLISaWeSoMe95 if you have a big wrist the bracelet is ok. But with those male end links it’s like 51mm which is way too big for people with sub 7” wrists
I certainly was guessing more than $ 500, having a curved sapphire crystal, nice strap with a deployant clasp. The 19 mm lug with is slightly annoying but Citizen got the proportions right. More of these please Citizen!
Citizen is so underrated, I saw the dial and I really liked it but....then you showed the movement and the automatic rotor, what is that :O truely stunning!
When this first arrived, I was seriously gawking at it for about 5 minutes. You know what I mean, when I say that even these videos don't do it justice with how nice it actually looks in person.
That's a beautiful watch. I'd have a hard time paying that for a Citizen, which I know is silly. But I'm glad to see them stepping up their game. Feel better soon, J.
Honestly I usually agree. I haven't seen many Citizens I found tempting.... but if I could afford to, this one might just do it. Sadly, my current most expensive watch was a little under half the cost of this one, and that was a stretch for me. lol
Fair play for doing the video. I had covid earlier in the year, had a tickly cough with it, talking was a nuisance at times. Get better. Hope he are all doing fine.
This channel was the reason I bought this watch in Japan. 😊 Superb dial. Very smooth movement cal. 9011. Clean and elegant case brushing and polishing. A very underrated Watch. Buying next Citizen NB1062 -17w.
Amazing watch I am a proud owner of, no real weak point. I sold my NB1050-59L after buying this one ! The metal bracelet with duratect treatment can be ordered from the brand, it fits this wath since it's the same case
Been eying this for a while and finally bit the bullet. 100% lives up to the hype. Great size as well (I was afraid it would be a little thick for my wrists). Might be my new daily driver as it dresses up and down well.
Even tho I overpayed havely on this one due to taxes and high local currency flactuations I think its my favourite watch to wear. The dial is just a work of art.
It’s back in stock and I am pulling the trigger on it this time but I have to grab the black one on bracelet and switch it. What a stellar looking dial. I had to come back and check it again on the best Watch review channel on TH-cam, long time Jody ! Hope all is well brother !
Your channel introduced me to this watch last year and it has been on my list ever since, I finally bought it last week and its the most stunning watch in my collection!! I appreciate your video a lot!!

I have to say that if I hadn't seen the brand logo I'd have sworn it was a Seiko dial. Hands and indices have a very Sarb 35 look to them. Cracking looking watch and I even think the date window suits it. Looks an absolute strap monster as well, despite the 19mm.
I aimed at between £600-700 which looking at how sterling is doing ain't far off , but i'd say i'd take this hi-beat beauty over what Seiko offers for an equivalent price plus in general Citizen qc by comparison isn't as much of an issue , but agree re: the signed crown & having varying lines but the main thing is the quality of the piece for the price .
Nice watch, nice video. FYI current Seiko Presage range at Melbourne Seiko Boutique is $650 to $6,400 AUD and everything in between. So this Citizen is in the lower to mid Seiko Presage range 👍
Thanks for not dinging the 19mm lug width too much! I agree it fits great with the proportions and would see it worse as 18 or 20. This one is really cool.
That's a beautiful dial. Reminds me of the Seiko cocktail series matcha limited edition from last year but in a different color and with a bit more color dynamics. Really well done.
I just came across this watch by accident and thought it was stunning! Decided to search TH-cam for reviews and, surely enough, Jody had just posted this. This is a sign! 😂 I’m buying the watch!
Hi Jody, god wanted this. You clearly can see a good watch, with quality. NO issues, movement looks really nice, it doesnt matter how many Seiko fans always mention a "wobble" and a one sided rotor. Citizen is better, and better starts NOW.
I do love my Ginza. Interestingly, it also has 19mm lugs and an unsigned crown. The lug width doesn't really bother me too much as a 20mm straps sit in there just fine.
Cheers for the review again Jody! I never really had any interest in Citizens before but it was more to do with their designs and less so about the brand itself. I'm still in the honeymoon period with it at the moment but I'm very very happy with this purchase so far. Ps I saw my Barry White comment yesterday sneaked into the video 😆
Cool dial. For someone like myself who already has a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SARY085, it would seem a little redundant to add one of these Citizens to the collection. I think the Presage Cocktail Times offer a bit more in case design, crown, case dimensions, etc.
Simple and elegant with an interesting colour palette, think Jackson Pollock lite. Impressive with a silly lug width, but I would forgive it that for that dial.
I've been a Citizen fan for a longtime....not the cluttered over stamped but the simple classic timeless dials ! The cluttered ones remind me of the Brietling Navitimer ...way to much numerals ! This one's very nice !
I’m personally a minimalist dial guy myself, own this one and a junghans chronoscope without the numerals. But if there is one watch which can pull off a crowded dial it has to be the navitimer, absolute classic!
I've been looking at this recently so was great to see a fantastic, detailed review, thank you. It really helps to see those macro shots and especially to see it on wrist and you always do a fantastic job. I've always been a fan of Citizen and think they are overlooked/underrated a bit by the TH-cam community. Thanks for another great review, keep up the outstanding work.
Had some great citizen divers, and recently started looking at their other offerings. Picked up a titanium NJ2180 in blue and love it. Dial is very reminiscent of a Presage.
Plus those hands! Lovely watch all the way, cheers Citizen (at last??!!). Thanks for the review Jody, a great watch featured today. Get well soon mate, cheers.
I feel your pain Jody, my voice has lowered two octaves as I've been under the weather too. Glad it didn't stop you from reviewing this watch though, a real beauty it is.
This watch caught my attention some time ago. Initially I wanted Tissot PRX but then I found this one. Both are at the same price range. I still can't decide which one should I get, but I'm slightly leaning towards Citizen. Thanks for rewiev Jody, there aren't many detailed rewievs of this watch on youtube.
As I've been window shopping their washi dial HAQ and others of their highest end (Chrono Master, the awkwardly named The Citizen) for the better part of the last couple years, I guessed a bit higher of a price for this stunner. Also as a big fan of Seiko's vintage 70s high end quartz, this too sings to me. Some real Morpho vibes. I really wish Citizen opened up more of these to the US! Though, I guess part of the fun of them is how physically rare and under the radar they are.
Jody: Hope you feel better soon. A lovely dial indeed. I would agree that it may be the best dial in 2022. I was surprised by the cost - I estimated $495 US, or a little less. What a beautiful dial!
Beautiful dial, love a citizen and hope this will rival the Seiko Cocktail time now they've turned a bit crap. 700 dollars with no signed crown and a Miyota is mental though. They either need to go for luxury or affordable, this just sits in a weird spot in the middle. Dial is mega though.
Not sure if I would buy one or not? It's a very attractive and well done watch, but I have a couple Cocktail Times and other dress/casual watches that already don't get worn nearly enough. It does appear that Citizen has figured out that the 8000 series movements, even the ones with hacking and hand winding weren't really cutting the mustard with enthusiasts and 9000 series movements were required. 👍
Looks like it should have a "GS" on the dial - especially with that handset. And as with Seiko and GS, they (and you) are spending on the dial. I thought it was some sort of paper at first - I think it's really interesting that they can create this effect with metal.
It is beautiful and really Pop's. It reminds me of the anOrdain model 1 vitreous enamel (scottish brand) Would love to see it in Plum Fume which is over $2,000 USD
Awesome dial! Citizen is getting better in value for money compared to Seiko imo. Please review the Citizen Tsuyosa! It's an automatic, sapphire crystal Rolex OP inspired watch for 300 usd.
That is a spectacular dial. Nice strap too. I would have picked a price point closer to 400 USD. As much as I like that dial knowing that their is a pedestrian Miyota 9000 backing it up knocks back my valuation somewhat. Still - that dial! I would love to see Citizen define their range better. With a more select movement this could become a halo product.
Magnificent piece, love the aqua 🌊 marble I said $ 700 dollars sounds right, I guess you're not paying for the movement or the crown,is the impressive dial ,a has wow factor in my humble opinion.....lovely piece ,thank you again for reviewing this incredible gorgeous piece no doubt seriously,,Jodi wet well soon Greetings from St George Utah 👋 until next time...
Wow, that is a really nice looking watch. I would really love to see what the silver dial version looks like. I definitely think this would make a really nice office watch that is a departure from your typical plain jane watches that are out and about. The best thing is that each dial is going to unique and different from the others in it's execution. That makes it pretty special. I would really love to see your take on The Citizen 0100 or even any of the Chronomasters. As far as branding goes, I have to say that I like the fact that I have a double branded Snowflake. Everyone not in the watch community see is and says, "Oh, that is just a Seiko" and I'm fine with that. I would rather have a stealthy high end watch rather than something that draws attention to me as a target when I am out on the street. That being said, I wouldn't mind having one of the Citizen 0100's because most people will just think it is "just an Eco Drive" and nothing special.
Very nice watch. Like enameled dials. Gouging the consumer is the business model of choice these days. Greed is the root of all kinds of evil. Love the channel you often make me smile.
I am a big fan of Citizen… Just took a look and I have six in my collection at the moment… I think there’s room for seven! Thanks for the great review Jody! p.s. I guessed $600 US
It's a very pretty watch overall, not just the dial. If this was a Seiko there would be a baby GS label on it almost without a doubt. I still think that SPB259 dial is the best one ever on a watch $1000 or less. Too bad I wasn't paying attention when it was released and was sold out everywhere by the time I became aware of it's existence. I feel a deep and passionate hatred for 6R movements 😂 but I would have bought the SPB259 at retail had I known about the watch in time.
There would be a GS-label on it because Citizen ripped off the famous Grammar of Design rules from Seiko. They really copied everything from these rules in this watch.
Great review as always Jody. And thanks to Gary for providing the watch for review. I love the watch, the dial is stunning, but 38mm is too small for my liking. And then there is the lack of a signed crown too. And finally the cost is way above what I would pay (as is the Seko SBP259!). Keep 'em coming Jody.
I'd pay easily over a grand for a Citizen, because they are a fantastic brand as a whole. Great watches, some fantastic pieces. The Chronomaster line is a wonderful line up, and their Washi paper line in red is one of the single most beautiful watches ever made.
Always have time for Citizen pardon the pun. When a well executed dial such as this, looks 3D on a 2D device, you know it's pure quality. Pity about the unsigned crown, as that would have been the icing but that doesn't detract from a stunning timepiece.
Citizen can make some very impressive dials when they try to. I have one of the Washi dial Chronomasters (their JDM competitor to Grand Seiko) and it is very pretty
Nice watch don't like the strap but a milanese would work. I guessed about £450 which until the last couple of days wouldn't have been too far off the mark.

Look up the Citizen Courageous, I got the blue dial BL1285-53L. That watch comes alive in the sunlight.
Citizen is one of those fantastic companies: mostly underrated, despite constantly pulling out innovative ideas. They are the LG of watches.
Great minds think alike and I just ordered this!
I really like this one. I own a SARB035 and get strong vibes of it here. The most I'd pay is $500 USD.
I thought the 9000 movement is meant to be relatively good?
Just bought one after watching your video :)
Thanks again Jody..
I love my Citizen Blue Angels! Very beautiful and surprisingly legible! The leather/nylon strap is great but takes time to break in.
Thanks for the great review Jody!
p.s. I guessed $600 US
Good analysis within the review. Agree with you about branding. This is on my Christmas list. I find your videos alyways worth a second look.
I like it. I also tiled the floor in my master bath with a tile that is almost identical to this dial
I'd pay easily over a grand for a Citizen, because they are a fantastic brand as a whole. Great watches, some fantastic pieces. The Chronomaster line is a wonderful line up, and their Washi paper line in red is one of the single most beautiful watches ever made.
AQ4020 in Red! But sold out years ago. Do they come up on Chrono24?
@@JustOneMoreWatch I've seen a couple, but not recently
Always have time for Citizen pardon the pun. When a well executed dial such as this, looks 3D on a 2D device, you know it's pure quality. Pity about the unsigned crown, as that would have been the icing but that doesn't detract from a stunning timepiece.
O wow. If I didn’t already wear a Hamilton khaki king Champaign, this would be on top of the list
Daaaang... that's a beautiful watch!
2:26 - - Ooh, 😍 that dial ⌚😎👍. Bet that would be awesome in crimson, green or brown as well.
Citizen can make some very impressive dials when they try to. I have one of the Washi dial Chronomasters (their JDM competitor to Grand Seiko) and it is very pretty
Yes chronomaster and Campanola are beautiful.
Nice watch don't like the strap but a milanese would work. I guessed about £450 which until the last couple of days wouldn't have been too far off the mark.
