  • In this 31st installment, Jimmy answers the age old question, “How do I adjust the height of my P90 Dog Ear pickups”? Using the Firebird Firefly FFDCS and some Lindy Fralin Dog Ear shims, Jimmy demonstrates how to get it done to “spec”, and how it can be done without removing the strings or disconnecting the pickup.

    Hey, Jimmy. Just discovered this video. Ben trying to sort out (without success) really bad sustain and horrible breaking up of clarity on the higher strings of my relatively cheap Harley Benton DC junior. Thanks to you, finally, I've done it!!! Almost impossible to get dogear P90 shims here in the UK, so I've used a couple of slices of neoprene (?) flooring cut to size under each 'ear' to list the pickup. What a difference! There was me thinking that pole pieces further away from the strings would be better, but, in fact, the opposite. Lesson learned. Thanks from the UK, Jimmy. 👍♥️😄

      My pleasure Glenn!
      Glad I was able to help out! P90 placement (especially true on the dog ear style and single P90) is extremely important. As I state, most “imports” have this style pickup placed way to low, which gives a more “muddy” sound clean, and much less clarity. Good work on cutting your own shims! Whatever works, right?
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Have a look around the channel, and don’t be a stranger! Hopefully you will find some other videos that you may enjoy!

      Hi Jordan…kinda depends on the guitar and why the pup may be to high. Is the “action” to low? Strings hitting the pup? You could try adjusting the bridge up to give you a higher action. If that’s not possible, you could see if you could get a slimmer dog ear cover, or do a bit of surgery. Try bending down the pickup tabs a bit, or taking down the cavity a bit so it sets lower into the cavity. A few different options..🎸👍

      Loosen the tension on the strings before trying to raise/lower bridge. Hit the bridge poles and strings saddles with a bit of 3-in-1 or WD40 or whatever you have around. Work the screws to loosen them up a bit.

      Yeah, P90 pickups are really a type of single coil with wider magnets. Pickup height is really more a personal choice depending on the sound you are going for. Gibson does however, recommend around 1/16th height from the bottom of the string to the top of the pole (measured while holding down the string at the last fret) as “spec”.

    Great! Here's how! Great!
    Problem. Shims for Gibson clones may not always be quite identical so.....use something else, like the guy in comments used a bit of neoprene. Use any bits of cardboard. Decide the thickness for how many layers and stick them together with Sellotape or kid's craft paste, use the p/up housing to cut to shape, drill accurate screw holes and install. If you're handy with tools, easy as pie. Black the edges with marker pen and no one will ever know.
    What if you're rubbish with tools? Ideal project. All you need is scissors, a drill is useful but......not essential. You can mess it up all you like without hurting your guitar and do a great job. £15.00? for three different sizes? or about the same for two? at one/eighth inch (way too fat)? Plus carriage/packing?....forget it. Any paperback book cover will do to get the height exactly where you think it needs to be.
    Nice video "how to". Thanks.

      It’s all good Lou…😎
      Usually, you would shim for large (needed) adjustment, then adjust poles for the “fine tuning” of each strings sound. It would be a good video to do…only problem I see is that everyone has a bit different idea on their “ultimate tone” and trying to achieve a truly perceptible difference in tone via TH-cam audio compression would be difficult at best. I try to get as close to what I am hearing in the studio by NOT utilizing any type of “post production” or DAW sweetening of the sound. I simply mic the room via the camera, so small adjustments to sound inherent to individual pole adjusting may not come across very well. It is a interesting idea though…will give it some more thought! Thanks again Lou…👍🎸

      I would first try to lower the individual poles on the bass strings side of the pups to see if that helps balance between your lows/highs. You may be able to dial it in that way. You could also try “raising” the high string poles or a combination of both.
      If that does not get you a better blend, then you could also just try raising the pups on the treble side (foam underneath that side) or a longer screw with a foam or washer on the treble side.

      You could do that...lots of “less expensive” ways to shim up a pup. Just wanted to show what most would consider the “proper” way and in my opinion, the best looking way to get it done. Some use foam, others cut up credit cards, other’s washers or whatever they may have on hand. It’s all good if it gets you what you want, the pickup stays stable and in place. @@JimmyStewart1 Thanks. Great video. I just got a guitar with P-90’s and I notice the pickup’s can move up and down when I press on them. I was searching to see if that is normal. @@mrmaramind
      They are probably “soap bar” P90 pickups. If so, they mount differently. Soap bars are adjustable to a certain extent, while “dog ear” P90’s mount right on the body. Soap bars are usually on a screw with a spring, or in some cases simply a screw going into a foam backing. By turning the two screws on a soap bar (not the poles) you can adjust the entire pickup up/down. So if the “spring” up or down when pushed, they are either mounted on screw/springs or there is a “foam” base underneath the pup (more common in less expensive guitars)
      Oh, and yes, this is normal. 😎

    Hi Jimmy.
    I have a question.
    I am a old-timer and haven't played electric guitar for many years.
    But now I have started to make music on my laptop.
    Using a midi controller and virtual instruments.
    It's a great feeling a lot of freedom and crazy nice sounds to work with.
    But I want to but electric guitar in my music.
    And looking on TH-cam videos I am liking the P90 pickups.
    It's a rich and raw sound at the same time.
    And now my question.
    Is the P90 with the hum and for what I can see more personality difficult for beginners?
    I have played acoustic all my life so I have learned to control the tone so I can play rock and blues on nylon strings.
    But I have to relearn to play the electric guitar.
    But learning is growing.

      First, thanks for watching and commenting! Glad to hear you are pursuing music again. It’s good for the sole!
      Personally I am a big fan of P90 pickups. They were really the “first” mass marketed pickup, before Fender started their single coil design, and Gibson came out with the humbucker. You can think of them as a “single coil” (which technically they are) on steroids! To me, they ARE the sound of classic rock, blues. The “hum” is quite manageable, especially at lower volumes and for recording, not really a issue. You could always get a noise gate (most computer software recording packages include some type of gate as a plug-in) if needed. The beauty of a P90 is you can get the “growl” when needed, along with some nice mid-twang too!
      Hope that helps answer your question! Feel free to check out the channel and ask questions whenever you need. Glad to help, and don’t be a stranger to the channel in the future, ok! Thanks again for visiting, and stay safe! 👍

      p90's will hum a little on a clean amp, but a lot on a high gain amp. They do make stacked p90's, they're 2 coils stacked on top of each other. It gets rid of the hum but has a different tone, a bit thicker sound.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the soap bars, they are usually mounted on screws/springs and or with “foam” underneath the pup. Tightening the screw pushes the head of the screw down into the cavity, (or the foam) thereby “lifting” the pickup. Opposite obviously when loosening them. Check to see if you have springs or foam or both.

      Hi Pulk Theband…thanks for watching and commenting. The recommended P90 spec height from Gibson is 3/64 from top of pup to bottom of string when fretting string from the 12th fret. This was what I was shimming the height to. I didn’t have any issues with intonation and honestly don’t think moving the pickup height to recommended spec would interfere. • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eugene Eaton
      Normally, yes. The neck pup will be lower than the bridge. Gibson “spec” is 2.4 mm for the neck, and 1.6 mm for the bridge (top of pole to bottom of string)
      This gives the best “mix” of tone using both, when using neck you get the mellow mids, using the bridge, more attack and definition.
      Depending on your style and sound of course, you can deviate to your hearts desire, but that’s the spec set by Gibson engineers.

    what is the improvement on the sound after this change?
    I am thinking of doing the same thing on my Les Paul JR copy.
    today I have a mojotone hot P90 dogear and it's 4 mm up to the strings.
    I live in Brazil and I don't know if I can find those shims here.
    but if it is a major improvement on the sound I can by theme on the ebay.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris…thanks so much for watching and commenting. P90’s usually respond with a bit less “muddyness” if placed a bit closer to the strings. This is mainly due to the construction of a P90 in general, being wider and flatter. If the sound you get now from your pickup works for you, then obviously nothing to do. If you are looking to help “clean it up a bit” then perhaps it is setting to low and would benefit from a lift. You could try cutting your own shim using a old credit card or hotel key if you can’t find a proper shim. Your ear will tell you if it’s a major improvement or not…experiment a bit with a home made shim and see what you think. Then you could locate or build a proper shim for aesthetic purposes if you wanted! I would think you would hear a pretty big difference in that monotone dogear if you have 4mm to play with. Good luck to you, and if you decide to bring it up, let me know how it works out for you! Thanks again for stopping in to the channel and hope to see you around! 👍🎸

      A standard P90 (dog ear or soap bar) will not fit into a standard humbucker slot without some routing of the cavity. There are however, some styles of “modified” P90 style pickups that are designed to fit humbucker slots. You can look at the Seymour Duncan P Rails or Phat Cats that are designed to fit humbucker slots.

      Yes, that’s one example. There are others as well....I think GFS also has some different P90 style single coils that are designed to fit into a standard humbucker slot.
      Remember, dog ear P90’s mount directly on the surface, so height and spacing is critical to sound. You could also route out to get a standard dog ear P90 to mount, but then you would need some surrounds to cover the gaps.

The neck pup's waay shorter. Maybe the working guts of the 2 pups are identically short and the bridge one just has a spacer within the too tall cover to accommodate. I dunno, I just don't know! There is simply ZERO help on the internet anywhere regarding my dilemma.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting....your issue seems to be the opposite situation, in as how can I lower a dog ear P90, and yours becomes a bit more complicated in that the Epiphone Wildcat seems to have a type of P90 that actually attaches to the chrome covers. So normally, you could buy shorter covers for your bridge pup for example, but it appears from what I have read, that is not the case for the Wildcat. I do know that Lollar is about the only company (perhaps Fralin now) that deals with those style pups. From what I understand, you would have to remove the pup completely and send it to them to modify. I would check with Lollar to see what the options are and if the cost would be in line with a mid-priced instrument like the Wildcat. When you say the bridge pickup is “too tall” do you mean the strings are hitting it? Are the poles all the way down? You could try raising the bridge if that’s the case. Remember, P90’s like being close to the strings...1/16 from bottom of string to top of pole...

      Thanks for watching and commenting! As I recall, the Riviera has 3 “soap bar” P90’s. They are normally adjustable for height. Pickup height is really a matter of taste honestly, unless the pickup is so low/or so high that the magnets can’t properly detect string vibration. Lower, more mids and mellow, higher, more bite and definition.
      You should be able to raise/lower those pickups without issue and adjust the poles to correspond to the fretboard radius for each string. As far as removing material from the pickup cavities, it’s hard to tell. Depends on how much you plann to remove, or how much is actually there. You could simply remove or disable the center pup if you wanted too. Lot’s of options but I still think you could lower without issue. Hope that helps a bit....👍

Check the tone with all different combinations. Depending on your string gauge, you should be able to get the right blend between lows/mids/highs by fine tuning the poles. If the pups themselves are either too high (back the poles down) or to low (shim or place foam underneath to raise them up).

      Great! Let me know how you make out. Remember, P90’s tend to be a bit “mid” heavy, but shouldn’t be too “bass” heavy as you indicate. They are after all, single coils so you should be able to dial in some “chime” though not as pronounced as say a Tele or Strat. What you should be going for is a “thick chime” if that makes sense. Then, if you are pushing them either via a pedal or tube amp they should be relatively clean.
