I teach water sports in the summer in Missouri and I keep showing experienced riders how easy it is to get up this way. And I learned it from watching Shawn Murray videos! Thanks for sharing such great tips with fantastic videography. You make learning easier by showing!
Yes! I think I saw one of y'all (real pros) do it on a DVD many years ago and have done it ever since... so much easier and way easier to teach! Thank you for continuing to spread the love of wakeboarding!
@@Shaun.Murray no, I feel like it was on Mayday... so actually would have been VHS! Just watched one of you do it and eventually figured it out... need to get back to riding more often 😎
Sean. I’ve been watching you since you started this sport. It’s awesome to see how you have made a career from this awesome sport of wakeboarding. Thanks for the video. I can’t wait to try it out in the spring.
Awesome to hear and thanks for the encouraging words. I'm super grateful I get to continue riding, coaching, and content creating for a living. One of my main goals is to share how to go about towed watersports in a fun, low risk, high reward way because it's a great way to not only get some fitness in, but it's one of the best ways to spend time with friends and family! Thanks again 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
Thanks Shaun, what a great video, now I can have people just watch this and then answer any questions or make gentle corrections. The only reason I often go to the twisted, "ski", start is to help people who are going to try wake skating or surfing next so they can have a common frame of reference and I can break them of the plowing habit early. It takes a lot of skill to pro start the wake skate and a most people can't keep a surf board under them when they are starting out.
Yooooo!!!! Love that start. Super fun and super easy once you try it. Also I have a force gauge similar to this but I’ve never tried it!!! Super cool! ~Ryan
On skim style it's doable and even on a more buoyant surf style board, but the more float (displacement) it has, the harder it is to keep down under you.
I have successfully done the pro start a handful of times but I find it is a lot of effort or even impossible to get the board under me after I’ve crashed. After jumping off the swim deck into the water, I can keep the board under me. Makes me wonder if my board is too big/buoyant for my body weight?
Yo Shaun. You already know I’m dumber than a box of rocks, but I struggle to get the board under the water when trying to do a pro start. Maybe it’s because I’m old and fat and way out of shape….. but….. Any chance you could do a vid on how to get the board under the water?
I don't know if this comes across as a name dropper but, I was stationed in Hawaii for a few years while in the U.S. Navy and ended up working with a guy named Lance Brug who always taught new comers that the best thing to do is to put your butt on your heels with the board perpendicular to the boat (like you're showing for the pro start) and waiting until the board comes up on plane before standing up. I saw him get TONS of people up this way who had no clue how to wakeboard. In your video it didn't seem like you were ever squatting on the board, it seemed like your legs were always straight whether you showed the plowing, or the pro start. It might be hard for someone new to the sport to visually understand the difference. Please don't take this as someone who thinks they know more than you trying to tell you how to instruct. I've watched your videos for years, including the original detention on VHS which helped me to make my first heel side back roll and I love what you're doing on TH-cam. I'm just giving you my perspective based on what I see and what you're trying to explain.
That's the way I always taught people. I am a guy that has really bad balance and that was the method that worked for me, after a few months of trying. So I defaulted to that for all the beginners.
Yeah this is more for people who like to dock start or whose boat or PWC might have a problem getting them up on deep water starts... Not for beginners. I always teach new people to keep their legs half extended and I drag them a bit first. Anyone with some cross-ability like surfing or skiing will instantly feel what they need to do and keep the board in front of them. It they get pulled forward over the board right away they need to drag a few more times. I don't want to pop somebody up sitting on their heels so they just stand up and faceplant or worse. I have seen bad things result. You should be able to do a regular deep water start before you are up on your feet in my opinion...
The way you explain it makes it so easy to understand and showing this to new people to wakeboarding makes it so much more clear

I’ve been doing this for 20 + years and I will never recommend another way. I’m pretty sure I learned this from you, Shaun ;)
Mind blown. I’ve been wakeboarding for over 20 years and never realized this. You da man Shaun.
Love to hear it! Wait til you experience it, if you haven't yet!

SCIENCE! Thanks for the clear explanation with empirical evidence! 👍🤙
Insert Mr Wizard theme song from old school Nickelodeon. 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼

For sure can be used especially in some applications like that 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
Fantastic instructional! I really like how you took the time to show/measure the lbs of pressure between the different methods.
Thanks, glad you liked the comparison! I found it pretty crazy how it stays under 100 lbs when getting up and riding
Love the vids can’t wait for summer!
Tryna keep y'all pumped for the next season and even teaching others! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼

Great video also just ordered a 2025 Murray pro I'm so excited to hit the water again
Noice! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
Let’s goooooo! 👍👊🤟👌
Great video! What speed is the boat going, and how fast does the boat accelerate? Thank you!
I taught myself to do that 🎉
Noice 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
@ thanks Shaun!
If the line is tight, I’m good to go! Lol
Nice 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
whats up shaun! 🤜
Sup Caleb?! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
Can this be applied when trying to get up, wake surfing?

Bigger boards can def play a role in making it more difficult but what are you approx stats? Board size vs height weight?

Adding it to the list now 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
Why do pros put their boards on on the sun pad rather than the swim deck? Never makes sense to me. And pains me thinking about the upholstery.
