Yes, the warm up (and I wish I knew exactly what they were playing) was just as good as the concert. The discipline and esprit de corps that these girls display is absolutely amazing. There will be over 90 of them coming to the Glenn Miller Festival in 2020. I hope you can be there to witness their performance!
These girls are incredible! You never see any american high school bands travelling to Japan. What an honor it is to have these girls share their talents with us.
You guys have to come to Carnegie Hall in NYC where legendary performances are displayed..please, you will blow everyone out of their seats...just amazing, talent should be seen and heard...you guys are tops
Awesome just Awesome !! This band has everything and this was the most complete of performances.and let's not forget the Excellent MD and the utterly charming MC.Perhaps they should have changed the backdrop to "WELCOME TO TAMANA COUNTRY". BRAVO!!!!
I have viewed hundreds of high school performances on TH-cam, This particular performance and band is far and away my favorite. Thanks for this excellent video.
I love everything about this! --I love the chorale in their warmup. I think someone said it was called PRAYERS? Does anyone know the composer? --I love the demeanor/decorum of their rehearsal. Everyone is so locked in, the rehearsal is practically dead silent (zero excess conversation) --I love how they open the concert with the Star Spangled Banner followed by their own National Anthem 'Kimi Ga Yo'. They're truly embodying the role of national ambassadors giving such a grand display with maturity and finesse. It actually makes me proud to be allied with a nation of such strong minded young individuals. --I love the pre-written speeches by their exchange student emcee. I kinda wish I knew her story a little better, but I can tell she worked really hard on the speeches. --All of the great American classics are nice, but I love that they played Takarajima by T.Square. This song is pretty well known in Japan, but not so much here in the States. --1:18:14 - A jolting reminder that these girls are still very, VERY Japanese! 😄
Where are the music sheets...most American bands have those silly music note things on their instruments... i came here after reading a comment while watching the KTSHSB...so far this band also Rocks...I may have to go check them out while they compete in the Glenn Miller competition this year...2020, the music selection is pure magical...
My opinion is that these young ladies are the very best high school musicians I have found on youtube. My question is concerning the fact that they obviously are not allowed to wear hair styles that have bangs. I have not observed this in other Japanese high school girls and have noticed that these girls do not pin back their bangs when not in school uniform. Does anyone know why these girls cannot wear bangs. They obvious would if they could.
I think that their instructors believe that the expression they are playing is also an important element of the performance. Appealing the entire face, including the forehead and eyebrows, to the audience is also an important part of the performance. I'm not good at English so please forgive me.
Though I can't say for certain why this is (I'll defer to Yuki's comment there), here's a point you might find interesting. In many Japanese school bands (which are usually 80-85% female), the younger ladies will often adjust their hairstyles to match the hairstyle of a senpai they admire, whether it's their section leader, or a drum major, or the band president. I do see a lot of matching styles in this group, though it's not as common as I've seen in other groups. And it's not just a hair obsession either....Japan is a very rank-obsessed culture. The senpai possess the great responsibility to teach the rookies the pecking order, and if the younger ones screw up, it's the senpai who get called out. So the senpai take their role very seriously, and the younger players look to the senpai as model examples. They know that one day they will have to step up and lead the next generation of juniors, so they look to the elders, the senpai to show them the way. I do think the hairclips for bangs is more of a uniform standard....not necessarily by the school, but I could see the band director (or student leader--student leaders have a LOT more power in Japanese bands than their American counterparts; they often even have the authority to dismiss rehearsal) giving some big speech to the band about how "We cannot achieve perfection with these wretched bangs getting in our way, so we shall ALL of us pin our bangs back in order to obtain maximum efficiency in achieving the greatest possible performance!"....or something like that. I could totally see it. Some Japanese bands go as far as to make sure everyone has their feet planted on stage the exact same way, and sync all their body motions together.
They are good and I think the band is composed of current and past students which bands in Japan usually do in some of their concerts. They are really worth listening. I might be wrong and I am sorry.
Yes, you are definitely wrong. These are all high school girls. They are very good, and girls from American high schools would never achieve the discipline, esprit de corps, and respect for adults that these girls have. I have been with them in rehearsal, watched how they display themselves in public, and been to many of their concerts, and recorded them as well. You would do well to research the history of this school and the many years that they have been coming to our festival in Clarinda before making such silly remarks.

It just takes one word to describe why these young ladies are so good - discipline. Something that is sorely lacking in American schools.
Awesome Warm-up. I really like this band. They have such a very powerful yet soothing sound.
I am watching this picture abroad, but the pitch and the sense of rhythm are more accurately impressed. Good luck in Japan's high school students!
