“I’m not going to go to the pet store and get a dog.” As if Kayla hasn’t gone harder in past videos, y’all remember when she bought a car for a vlog? 😂 I love her vlogs and themed videos so much!
Yep…. We are anti-readers at this point 😂 I tend to go with the opposite of what your reviews tend to be-your low ratings tend to be my high ratings, vice versa- and your Agnes DNF solidified it haha. Its an all time favorite comedy read for me. It’s kind of cool to have someone so utterly opposite, you’ve given me a lot of favorite reads by accident 💀🤣
Eeewww, I hate that that author is commenting those passive aggressive comments on all the low star reviews, I just had a look on Goodreads and he doesn't comment on 5 star reviews. That's just petty and makes me 100% know I don't want to try any of his books
I’m only 20 mins in but I want to thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos. They give so much comfort and it’s like we’re on these little adventures with you. Love love love your videos! ☺️💕
as an ex-muslim, give me that jameela green book! i need that! i love reading messy people struggling with Islam - like as a genre. it's v relabatable & comforting when i see people openly struggle with faith/religion in a community where we are NOT supposed to ever say that. adding it into my cart right now!
When you were talking about Renovated to Death repeating character descriptions constantly I thought "hm kinda sounds like what annoys me about Nancy Drew books" and then you mentioned Nancy Drew later 😂 glad to know i wasn't wrong
I took my starting word for today's wordle from your little "PNW" bit (before I'd even reached the part of the video where you bring up wordle) and got it in two! 😱 add this to the fact that I first heard about wordle through your videos and as far as I'm concerned you're like the patron saint of wordle or something, incredible
Kayla: “I’m going to bake for this book cause I’m not going to go out and buy a dog. Well, we’ll see what happens.” Me: (thinking you’re considering buying a whole *ss dog for the sake of this video) “Omg, Kayla NO!!”
I have a love/hate relationship with cozy mysteries because of the number of ones that have horrible handling of body issues. Older ones also seem to rely heavily on romance and needing a man to feel validated. I'm now a huge follower of reviews if I'm thinking about buying one or using the library.
I recently have gotten into cozy mysteries as well! I don’t like really dark thrillers, so these are perfect for me! The first one I read was a Hannah Swenson book by Joanne Fluke. They have recipes in them. Now I’m on book 2/2 of the furever pets mysteries by Alex Erickson. Thanks for the recommendations in this video. 🧡
Not everyone ignoring your pnw-ing your pants joke. 😂 (Side note have you ever done a video of books that have your name in them and talk about the characters? Inspired by all of your Rob books + I just read once upon a broken heart and there’s a character named la la!)
The scenery was nice during Scene of the Climb! Thank you Kayla! I love books that details the outdoors. It’s a shame the character is a pick me and doesn’t make it worth reading a sequel though.
This is totally my favorite series of yours this year. I still think it would be really fun if you tried solving a mystery during your next cozy mystery vlog, whether it's from a book or a game or I don't know what else there is lol. Also Only Murders in the Building!!
I read Jameela Green last year (I won an ARC from GoodReads) and loved it! Gave it 5 stars. I hope your recommendation will have more people picking it up!
I'm so excited to read Death by Bubble Tea now! I just grabbed it from my library this week. I'm impatiently waiting for Two Parts Sugar One Part Murder to be ordered by my library now 💜
OMG! I met Jennifer Chow, who wrote Death by Bubble Tea, in Berkeley (she's local and was at the book festival) and she's so sweet! I love her books too. She's also a member of Mystery Writers of America if memory serves.
Don't sleep on the sweetness at the bottom of the pie! I thought the same thing when I saw it was a teen detective. I don't have alot of interest in that, but this series is fantastic! Really well written, great mysteries and Flavia is my hero lol
cosy mystery also really is the mood of Kayla's VLOGs. They always give me such a warm fussy feeling and make me happy while I keep wondering what's gonna happen next. I really needed this right now so thank you! And I'll definitely pick up Death by Bubble Tea :D
I watched this just for your reaction to Jameela Green Ruins Everything. I read it earlier this year and instantly wanted you to try it out because…it is a different reading experience.
Thank you so much for such detailed content!! I love it please do more of these long videos they are my favorite. Also, I had the same experience with Boba. I thought I didn’t like it and gave it a try years later, and loved it! Very weird how taste I’m anything can change so much!
I loooove bubble tea 🧋glad you're joining the boba train kayla 😌 I am a slush with pearls girl mainly (peach strawberry or raspberry) but i also love milk tea with the classic squishy boba. my friend loves the brown sugar ones so I recommend on behalf of her especially as our coffee tastes are like the exact opposite so it's probably the same with boba too😭
Although not a cozy mystery, I wonder if you'd enjoy Legends & Lattes; the renovation of the cafe is pretty integral to the story and it definitely gives off cozy vibes.
You should check out some British cosy mysteries, they’re my favourite type of light mysteries. The Marlow Club Murders, The Bingo Club Murders, a Spoonful of murder, Agatha Oddly ( middle grade) etc.
I love this series! I always wanted to try audiobooks, but most adult mysteries have too many people, plot twists and I was lost if I didn't listen for one second. But these cosy mysteries are easy to follow :)
Glad you read Grave Reservations because I DNFd that earlier this year and have been thinking about going back to it, but now hearing your thoughts I feel more confident about my decision to put it aside.
i'll once again make my case for the Heather Wells Mysteries series by Meg Cabot! it's a cozy murder mystery of a former pop star who now works at a college dorm trying to figure out the murder of a student who died in her dorm
My favorite videos of yours are the ones that explore where you live, it’s so beautiful! (And especially right now when I have a hurricane stalking me and I can’t go outside lol - perfect timing)
wasn't interested in scene of the climb until you said the book was set in oregon and instantly intrigued, it's just so fun reading books set where you live! sadly though i don't like mystery a bunch...but love watching other people read them for me lol
I’m not done yet but you mentioned the cover design series you do and I just want to say I loveeee that series and i rewatch your other ones all the time!
I live in Oregon and almost every book I read or show I watch that’s placed here is about a cop or some kind of murder…. I don’t know how to respond to that In all seriousness though it’s beautiful out here, especially in the Colombia gorge area and around Portland, and I highly recommend visiting at some point
Since you liked Death by Bubble Tea, you should definitely check out Aunty Lee’s Delights by Ovidia Yu set in Singapore and featuring a funny and “feisty” old woman who runs a restaurant.
I have only read one of Cherie Priests books (The Family Plot) but I really enjoyed her writing. So good to hear what you thought of Grave Reservations. Oh my gosh, the stink bugs! It’s a bad year for them. I’m in Revelstoke and it’s the same situation here haha
Unrelated but I love baking and the problem with the cookie dough wa s actually probably that you under mixed it. Super dry sugar cookie doughs like that usually need to be worked for a super long time before they come together.
Love the vlog esp the walk in the woods and the cookie baking since that's one of my fave things to do bake cookies. The book Two Part Sugar sounds right up my alley. I think I'll pick it up it does sound perfect mystery for Fall.
Oooooh I just finished the second Finlay Donovan book last week. So excited for the third book! I also loved Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies so can't wait for the second book in that series.
If one of your words ended up being right first try, I would have died. I love these vlogs so much. Can't wait to see your continuation video, particularly with Veronica Speedwell, of course
I know I'm sharing this on an old video, but GoodReads tells me you've not read any more Cherie Priest. I was introduced to her in 'Boneshaker' (which is the start of her Clockwork Century - a steam-punk sci-fy series), but I feel you'd like 'The Family Plot' and 'The Toll'. They're both very quick ghostly reads.
If you're looking for another good cozy. Read "Hungarian Tea House Mystery" books by Julia Buckley. There are 3 and they are wonderful!!! 1/ Death in a Budapest Butterfly 2/ Death of a Wandering Wolf and 3/Death on the Night of Lost Lizards
i requested the library bring in renovated to death and i'm so glad they did because i DNFd it before i even finished the first chapter XD whew, saved myself some money lol
I really love the concepts of your videos, Lala. Appreciate the effort and creativity in each of the video. Great job and thanks for making us happy with your books updates! 🎉
I look forward to your longer vlogs and thanks for sharing your opinions. Will I read these? Likely not. I read a few cozy mysteries and they're not my thing, but I'll live through you, lol.
So I found your channel like four years ago and fell in love with your content. I used to be and still am a book collector, but I would never get around to reading what I like, but since I found your channel I've started reading more and more! This year I've read more books than I ever have in my life, at 45, granted some of them are manga and comic work but a solid 25 of them are typical books and that alone sets a record for most books read in one year. Before I found your channel I used to read like one book a year. I've learned so much about my reading style, habits, and preferences. Thank you for all the amazing content you put in and all the hard work you do. ^_^

Mystery novels that are fun but not necessarily cosy that I'd recommend are the Vinyl Detective series by Andrew Cartmel (no 1 is Written in Dead Wax. Great if you want an activity and you like buying vinyl albums) and Killing in Costume by Zac Bissonette (the main couple were married but both came out but then went into business together later in life)
I just put up a video of reading the manga, Monster, and in it, my hubby and I try bubble tea from a new tea place here in town (I like the milk tea ones). We actually got 2 new bubble tea places here, which is random (I live in FtMac, so getting 2 very similar shops is weird) and now I want to get more bubble tea lol.
Jameela Green sounds sooooo good, I love when I discover things I've never heard of on your channel!!! Also... did you dog ear a library book? 😂 Also Also.... I feel like you would love Down Days by Ilze Hugo, not because the plots are similar but I think the vibes may be based on your description. It's a crazy, ridiculous sort of novel set in Africa about this town suffering from a laughing epidemic. It's got very few ratings which is a shame cause I think it really deserves more attention.
Curious for folks’ take on whether the Inspector Gamache novels classify as cozy. I love Three Pines so much, and am dying to know if Kayla would like like those!
I don't think it's technically considered a cozy mystery - one reason is that cozy mysteries feature amateur sleuths. However, it's still an amazing series 😍😍😍
Hey Kayla, I don't know if this book would count as a cosy "mystery", but have you read "Mother for Dinner" by Shalom Auslander? It is a hysterical family drama involving a Cannibal-American community whose traditions demand family members to eat their dead so they can live forever. Its one of those stories that really shouldn't be funny but manages to get you, like the way you describe Jameela Green?
Because you liked Veronica Speedwell I feel like you might like A Marvellous Light, it's a Victorian murder mystery with magic plus it's gay and the sequel which is coming out in November is sapphic. Also you might like The Thursday Murder Club if you like an older cast of characters who are all friends and solve murders together.
I didn't enjoy the Flavia DeLuce series either and I usually like cozy English village mysteries. It was disappointing since it's a super popular series. I seriously can't get over how beautiful the cover of Death by Bubble Tea is.
“I’m not going to go to the pet store and get a dog.” As if Kayla hasn’t gone harder in past videos, y’all remember when she bought a car for a vlog? 😂 I love her vlogs and themed videos so much!
I really said "for *fins* of Finlay Donovan"
An hour long vlog is exactly what I need after the day I’ve had

Choosing an activity: “Hopefully not having to murder anybody”. 😂

I love the Flavia DeLuce books. She is so deliciously dark.
He is also a Canadian author, but he lives in the UK in his retirement.
