    How to Mask
    This time, we're talking about why we should mask materials before cutting or engraving them in the Glowforge or any other laser cutter. Masking your wood or acrylic before cutting them with a laser printer or laser cutter is super important to avoid nasty scorch marks on your projects! Get nice clean edges on your Glowforge projects and creations by masking first.

    Thanks for the video. Never thought about the cold laminator before. I usually roll the tape out on a table, sticky side up and then place the material on top. Because the table and the material a flat, there are usually no bubbles as the tape gets sandwiched. You can then press it down, cut it off, flip it over and run a brayer ( I think that’s what it’s called, the rolly thing they use for Lino printing) over it to really stick it down. Works great.

      Hi Alex! What a great idea! I've actually changed the way I mask now too which involves basically pulling more than enough tape from the roll, fixing down the one end to the material and then lining the edges up and smoothing it down. Difficult to describe but effective. I'm going to try your method too and see which is easier. Thanks for sharing!!

    Great video. Very informative and a joy to have someone with your easy style. For masking, I'm guessing it's easier to do the whole piece rather than just where you are cutting. Looking at that piece you did, if you know the shape you could just do the outline so that you save tape? Once I get going I will figure out which is best and saves time. Thank you again.

      You could certainly spend time masking only the areas that you're going to be cutting or engraving but for purpose of ease and expediency, I just mask the entire piece. Thanks for the kind words too!

    could you use the wide masking tape for the cut side and 1/2" tape on the back side edge to save the expense of the wide tape?

    • @SteelForge1
      @SteelForge1  ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably could but speed of production becomes a concern if it's finicky

    Great video where can I get the 3m roll and the other masking tape? Can I use the 3m sticky stuff for small items like dog tags so they don't slip around on the laser bed and move, also it should prevent it from scratching the metals.

      Thanks for watching! You can get 3M adhesive tape from various sellers on Facebook laser groups and depending on where you're located, probably Amazon. Same with masking tape. A quick Google search will point you in the right direction as well since it's different for every country/area. I wouldn't use 3M tape on anything you don't want permanently stuck. It's extremely strong adhesive.

      Hi Laura! I don't have links for them unfortuately but the 3M tape is the 467 version and I use a low tack masking tape. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    I built a nail bed for my laser, so no flashbacks like solid tabled and honey-comb beds. Of. It does help to have a laser with 60cm of Z😎

    Very helpful video! I am in the states and I tried looking up the 3m tape but there were so many different kinds to choose from 3m. Do you mind telling me the exact kind of 3m tape also the brand of masking tape? I don’t think all masking tapes are of equal quality and it seems as though you have found a good one! :)

      Thanks for watching! I use 3M 467 tape. It's very strong when bonding the plywood together and even stronger for acrylic.

    Good day! Thanks for the video! For the mirrored acrylic, do you remove the clear layer plastic that comes on it before masking both sides? Just wondering if that plastic will melt onto the acrylic surface even if it's paper masked too

    • @SteelForge1
      @SteelForge1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! Thanks for watching! Yes, I do remove it. I either mask both sides or mask one side and 3M tape the other if I'm sticking it to anything.

    Wife and i just got a glowforge. we got masking tape and with the first couple cuts we have done so far, the masking tape started to peel where the laser was engraving. does that happen to you? we got the masking tape that i saw on a bunch of youtubers have been using.

    • @SteelForge1
      @SteelForge1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for watching! I can't say that does happen to me but I use a high tack masking tape called Oratape HT55 and I make sure that I rub the tape down really well with a hard plastic squeegy.

    What are your tips if you mask the backside and you still get that flash back on your piece of wood?

    • @SteelForge1
      @SteelForge1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tabatha! Thanks for watching :) To get the best results, I always mask both sides of whatever I'm cutting. Usually, I'm masking one side with masking tape and the other with the 3M adhesive but it works equally well with just masking with the tape. If you're masking and still get the flashback, you may need to use a better quality masking tape that's thicker to avoid that happening. I hope this helps!

      Hi Karen! I buy my tape from a local sign supply store and the 3M adhesive from facebook.com/groups/683090045738676. They're a Canadian supplier and I'm sure they sell the masking tape there as well. Hope this helps! :)
