I’m proud of you for allowing your friends words of wisdom “life’s not guaranteed” to propel you into taking this trip. Those words are affecting me too, in a positive manner.
I hoping to go back a few more times. It's quite a distance for me, but was well worth it. Next time I'll plan for more time in the area that's for sure
Sad, but true. The only thing with Mt Airy that made it into the show was Snappy Lunch. But he did take care of ($$) the church and a few people in the area who helped him along his way.
There is about 2 days worth of things to do. A lot of the popular stuff downtown close around 6ish. A few restaurants stay open later. Of course the rest of the town is still going on after 6. (They know how to swing)
When I lived in South Carolina, I visited Mt Airy and it was the highlight of my year since I em such a huge Andy Griffith Show fan so csn get most trivia questions on practically any trivia quiz. For too many fans have thr misconception the Mayberry was fashioned after Andy's hometown but it wasn't Most DON'T know that the only part of it featured on the show was ONE mention of "The Snappy Luch" which is a diner the specifies in its porkchop sandwiches. I ate there and really enjoyed it. None of the places in Mt. Airy were actually featured on the show. The Barbour shop and filling station were so nemed after the show was on. Also, Mt Pilot was named for the toen of Pilot Mountain, it too far away and it turned out to be a disappointment to me.
Your right. I did mention that Snappy Lunch was the only store mentioned on the show that was an actual place. You're right, not many know that. We also did thr squad car tour and that video will be out tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that one too! Thanks for watching & commenting!
We went on a Saturday and everything seemed to be open except for a few smaller shops. I did find out they close down the downtown area around 6pm. A bit early to our usual time. But we understood why. Next time we go, we're planning on going a few more days. Thanks for watching & commenting!
Whenever asked throughout his life, Andy Griffith was adamant in his reply that Mayberry was NOT, NOT, based on Mt. Airy. Mt Airy tried and tried to coerce him to publicly link his name and likeness as well as the show to their town. They'd name streets, parkways, and buildings after him. Consistantly, throughout his entire lifetime, he refused. Don Knotts refused as well. This is all common public knowledge.
Although, he did mention the Snappy Lunch in the show, that's in Mt Airy. He was also present at the dedication of the Andy Griffith Parkway in 2002. Mayberry may not be based 100% off of Mt Airy, but I'm sure it did play a part in the TV shows.
@OutdoorsWithShawn Hey Shawn, rather than clinging to an opinion, take 10min. out of your life and simply listen to the man himself say it out loud and in person. Mr. Griffith left no doubts when directly asked about the Mt. Airy/Mayberry issue. And, you have more than a single opportunity to hear him say it plainly. Reinforcement. You may prefer your opinions over his facts, but at the end of the day, you'll find the truth is a very stubborn thing.
My channel is not monetized.
If you are seeing ads before, during, and after my videos, its not me doing it, and I'm not getting any money from them.

I've definitely taken a lot more trips and done more things I may not have done had I not heard that from my friend.
I'm on one right now!!
Thanks so much! I couldn't go this year so this sure did help . Very nice!

Well done vid. Loved that show
Thank you sir!
I've been working on it since the end of June. Lol
Awesome video!! I always loved this show. Really cool to see the area today 😎🤘
If you're ever in the area, I highly suggest going there for 2 days to see and enjoy it all.
@@OutdoorsWithShawn will do thanks!!
Wow!! 😊 I feel like going on a time trip and it was great place to visit.
One of my best birthday presents to myself I've ever gotten!
Awesome 😊👍👍👍
Andy Griffith sure didn't think much of Mount Airy though. And Andy says the show had nothing to do with Mount Airy. The interview is here on TH-cam.
Sad, but true.

I am 46 and a huge Andy Griffith fan! Favorite show ever! Is there really lots to do here? I’m coming from Massachusetts

Mr. Lot of the attractions were not there or not opened when I visited.

I DO NOT WANT TO GO THROUGH NORTH CAROLINA
Why not? We enjoyed our trip there.
