      He just dropped something today that was pretty dope (only one song, but it's on his TH-cam) - don't think I'd personally call it breakcore. But yeah, while I dug some of the other tracks people recommended like Burn This Moment..., O'er the Flood just spoke to me.

And 2. - I just in general haven't had time to make videos, except when something makes me obsessed. Thank you to you and your brother! I've gotten more than a handful of requests for Burn This Moment... and I would be very down but my goodness it'd take some practice! (It feels like the type of track that you should stay fairly faithful to instead of improvise over, which I do a lot, but regardless it's also *so* fast!). But I'll be honest, it also sounds like an awesome challenge that I'm starting to get obsessed with, so who knows, I might try it.

      @karlfagerstrom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've gotten that request a few times. I like the challenge of all the glitchy beats at ~217 bpm, and it would take a ton of practice, which I don't mind. But it'd likely be copyright claimed like this vid was, which makes me not want to spend that much effort :/ I was pretty bummed when that happened here, since drum covers are by definition transformative and therefore fair use, but oh well, there's really not much you can do about it 🤷

    • @Fahad-21
      @Fahad-21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@karlfagerstrom Oh that's so unfortunate. What about without backing music? I know it will probably sound just like rhythm noise, but it would still really cool imo.

    • @karlfagerstrom
      @karlfagerstrom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I've seen those and they're a bit awkward. Here's one an IRL drummer friend of mine did for a song that I love, and he killed it, but it's still kinda goofy without the music lol: th-cam.com/video/U5uiz_plxBU/w-d-xo.html
      One of the things that gets talked about with fair use is "market replacement," ie does your content *replace* the appeal of the original work (in other words, if people like what you do, are they *less* likely to consume the original content you're using). Which is super valid - on one hand, you've got commentators whose content is generally meant to dunk on or at least have an in-depth discussion on the source material being used; their audience would never have sought out the original stuff without the commentators' input, and it's obviously fair use. It's like the TH-cam version of The Daily Show using clips of Fox News to mock them, or vice versa - either way, there's clearly no 'market replacement' happening. But on the other hand, you've got streamers on Twitch who stream themselves sleeping while their computer plays Lord of the Rings in the background, which their viewers can then watch for free. And that's blatant infringement.
      Even though drum covers are transformative, it's kind of a gray area, because I've gotten that 'market replacement' comment a few times (in other words, *some* people have told me they now watch my videos *instead* of listening to the original tracks). So I could see a fair compromise being the small amount of TH-cam ad revenue getting split between the coverer and the original artist. But since the copyrights are held by labels that just use an algorithm to claim their music, and small channels like mine have no realistic recourse to dispute it (without risking losing their channel), we end up just giving up on stuff like that.
      Of course I don't make these silly videos for the money, but it'd be nice to get a little bit when some people seem to like what I do. It'd probably motivate me to upload more (hell, maybe then I could even buy a new cymbal or a few more mics haha)
      Also sorry that this comment ended up being a freaking novel, I have lots of thoughts on the subject lol

    I really love how you played the outro 3, the song still feels a bit fast even until the end, but the you way play it makes it feel slower, I don't know if I explained it well, but I like it a lot, excellent work :3

    • @karlfagerstrom
      @karlfagerstrom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! The secret to calming it down (in this instance) is going to "half-time" in Outro 2(ie the backbeat snare is half as often as it was earlier) , after just getting quieter and jazzier in Outro 1. Then I went to *quarter-time* in Outro 3 for a very chill feel (ie halve the frequency of the snare *again*). I didn't realize that's what I was doing at the time, but it flowed well.
      Normally my favorite part to play on one of these videos ends up being one of the shreddiest parts - but here, I very much preferred playing these calm Outros. I loved transitioning from the breakcore chaos into the half-time rock into the very ambient light touch at the end. I felt like I was very in tune with the song - and the song is objectively beautiful. So even though it's just a silly lofi drumming video, it felt *wonderful* to make, because I got to play that outro a dozen or so times in a row (although it was rough playing the rest of the song that many times hahaha).

      @@karlfagerstrom Wow you're right, you really notice how you slow down as the song reaches its end, I agree with you with that light ambient touch at the end, it makes this song even more beautiful, anyway it's nice that there is someone like you being into breakcore doing these covers, it's something unique I think, finding just my favorite breakcore song transformed into this was great, another experience, I hope you continue doing what you do for a long time because you do it excellent!

    dude it is really so nice!! i watched a few video today and it was amazing to watch your drums! i will watch to other nights but i am wonder two thing, can i ask what highest tempo song in your channel and what video is your favorite you uploaded?

    • @karlfagerstrom
      @karlfagerstrom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! And these are great questions! But both tough.
      I'm not sure what the highest BPM I've done on the channel is, and I'm not always that worried about the specific BPM number as a flex - I'm usually more concerned with artistically playing over stuff, building energy as the song builds, expressing myself, playing with power, etc. For instance, on this Goreshit one, I think the bpm is 186 - which is pretty fast but not insane, by any means - and I didn't go for a note-for-note exact cover, but I did want to play with power, express myself with some improvisation, and get the overall feel and most of the "hits" in it. I pride myself on the power aspect because it's pretty unique as far as drum'n'bass / breakcore is concerned (it seems like it's only done by drummers like myself that also have a heavy/punk background; most other drummers play it *very* lightly). And there's some slow songs I'm proud of in these respects, like my Death Grips "No Love" cover (plus slower BPMs = even more options for faster rhythms that you can put in it in fills, etc.). But I'm probably most proud of the harder Clowncore covers (like "Earth" and "Hell"), as I had to learn super syncopated rhythms note-for-note *exactly*, especially on the kick, and then I improvised a little on the free-er sections. Plus those songs weren't originally recorded to a click, thus making them even harder. But I guess the highest BPM I can think of for sure is the 233 BPM track I was messing with today (I shouldn't have been playing today at all, as I have a sprained wrist and broken ribs, but it felt good to dust off the chops after almost a week without playing). I'm about to start picking takes for a couple "short" covers I did of it with note-for-note accuracy for an added challenge that I don't always give myself (but I haven't even tried playing it all the way through note-for-note yet - I mostly just messed specifically with the three hard / fast break sections). In case you're curious, the track I'm talking about is Loli in Early 20s' "Ush Ush Desu Desu Pa Pa."
      Sorry for the essay-length comment, btw. Also I just realized from *your* comment that English might not be your first language (no hate at all - but this wall of text I just wrote might be hard for Google Translate, so I apologize again - you just had damn good questions, what can I say? 😊)

    • @lordzilla8087
      @lordzilla8087 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow, ty for answers! i love too listening songs which can make me feel good pleasures but sometimes i want to listen some really really high bpm drum voices so dont think im care about bpm so much. i listened your covers, improvisations and i think you doin it great! i impatiently waiting your next videos. and yeah english isnt my native language but i can understand mostly in text i use translate apps mostly for words so i can understand what you say, it is little tiring but not a problem, not known english is my fault so if i tired you so sorry d: . i hope you'll get better soon, take care bud! \(^ ^ )/

      Thank you so much for the kind words!...I *love* Aphex Twin, and should really cover something of his, although "Flim" already has some note-for-note perfect covers out there (including one by a blindfolded dude), and I don't know if I can add much of value to the conversation. Especially since The Bad Plus' David King also does a wonderful, improvised-but-largely-faithful version, too (which is what I like to do). But I'm always down to play AFX, and have gotten enough requests for it by now that I should definitely try something of his.

    • @karlfagerstrom
      @karlfagerstrom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely, but do you have a specific spot in the vid you're thinking of?
      Edit: really though no matter which part you're talking about, it's probably gonna be a combination of Moeller and paradiddles/inverted paradiddles (pretty much all the clusters at their most basic level are just two notes in a row, but there are lots of small clusters all bunched very close together, if that makes sense)
