He can't sing, he knows like 3 chords and that song that got him famous has already been said thousands of times and far more poetically. Perfect example of how talent doesn't matter as much as luck sometimes. And don't get me started on his likeable everyman persona that is so carefully marketed that you know it's intentional.
A lot of stuff they play on the radio now is just blatantly ripping from older dance tracks. I can give three examples: I heard a track with a male singer, and the song uses ATB's 9PM - Till I Come guitar riff; another song which steals the beat from Sweet Female Attitude's song Flowers; I also heard a song which steals the whole Nighcrawler's song Push The Feeling On, and I've heard the same song stolen with the lyrics changed for a We Buy Any Car advert. A great pop-dance track that came out recently, which isn't being played on the radio is Strong by Romy & Fred Again. Give it a listen.

Like Thom Yorke, Dave Grohl, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, etc but I get what you mean about the difference between the two. I do prefer more raw talent kind of singing than someone who is technically gifted and trained but I feel like thats more about the genere of the music and the lyrics too. There are some amazing non trained singers and some trained who are just amazing although I would be more rooting for the non trainted ones cause a lot of them are more relateable to me at least. It’s worse when it’s a woman singing - they do this shite where they sound like a baby, hushing all the words together in an indistinguishable blur. Actually Olivia Rodrigo's good 4 u is considered the first rock song to top the hot 100 since maybe 2002 (depending on what you consider "rock"). Rock might be making a bit of a comeback to the mainstream (you've got Måneskin too as limmy says)

The lines between pop music and rock music often blur, however, it doesn’t feel like rock music at all, it feels like pop-punk, which nowadays is just pop music that tries to be, for lack of a better word, ‘cool’, like rock music, but often ends up coming across as insincere and ‘fake’. Finally, even if it were very, very, very slightly rock oriented, even then, it would be on the very poppy, cheesy end of the spectrum. And very finally, to be fair it is better than most stuff on the charts, but that could be because it was very suspiciously ‘written’ by the same people who own the rights to Paramore’s song ‘misery business’.

But I think pop punk doesn't simply try to be cool like rock, it also has many musical elements generally associated with rock. For me whether something is "rock" is less about aesthetic or affect, and more about the music. Do you think of misery business as a rock song, out of interest?
