    So glad you mentioned the Midwest. Most reviews never consider that type of trails that we have here. Our trails are located mostly in dense woods and have punchy climbs with tight twisty switchbacks. We don't necessarily require slack geometry here.

    Perfect timing on this video. Just got my DV9 yesterday, did a quick test ride, and can't wait for the weekend. Purchased it thanks to some glowing reviews online and your wife's recommendation as well. Your review is icing on the cake. A hardtail that will allow me to get back into racing yet fun with my wife and kids on flowing trails. I'm stoked. By the way, I had no idea how gorgeous Sedona looks. Need to plan a trip out there for some riding. Cheers!

    I own a dv9 and I'd say your review is spot on. This is a great bike for people who want to learn the fundamentals of trail riding. It's forgiving due to the lightweight and sturdy enough so it doesnt feel like it's going to snap when the trail gets gnarly. Also 2.6 inch tires are nice for those really chunky trails.

  • @hardtailparty
    @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    CORRECTION: There are two errors in this video (sorry, I get my numbers mixed up from time to time, especially without the charts in front of me). It's got a 120mm fork, not a 130mm fork. And it doesn't have a very short chainstay (439mm). But it feels shorter than the numbers suggest.

    I’ve been riding a medium DV9 for almost a year around northern CA.. it’s made me a climbing champ, even with flat pedals. Super fun at high speed. I’m 5’9” probably should have got a large for some extra reach.. great wheels and with 2.5/2.6 tires really help soak up the trail.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome. I think that'd be the perfect norcal bike. I'd love to try it with 2.6s sometime, but my wife really likes the lighter 2.35s (which actually measure quite wide on these rims).

    About the OneUp dropper. As a short rider, I'm stuck with them. They have the shortest insertion length in the biz and my Evils can only fit a 125mm otherwise. My V2 had problems sticking, but can be solved by adding air and a little light grease under the collar. They just came out with the V2.1 and say those issues have been resolved. So far, it's been butter. I'll let you know if it ends up having issues after some more time on it

    Good review Steve, I agree with your overall assessment. Mine is set up with a 130 Pike and 2.6/2.5 tires which up the capability a notch in the rough stuff. Really fun bike. I recently picked up a Fuse 2020 frame and built it up pretty nice - it’s surprisingly more compliant than the DV9 even though it’s Al - great to have both in the stable.

    My Zocalo was speced w/ a 120mm Revelation, i put a 130mm Pike and it didnt change the head angle too much, a -.5 slacker (i moved my seat up on the rails so as not to lose my ST angle)... but i would have no problem smashing most Sedona blues and blacks on it (thats what a good design can do)....

    Since you have reviewed both the Ibis DV9 and the Marin Pine Mountain I would like to ask you which one would you choose as a bikepacking bike for long days in the saddle? Based on the comfort as the main parameter. Thanks!

    • @hardtailparty

      I would choose the aluminum chameleon for bikepacking. The dv9 and pine MTN couldn't be more different. I'd never choose a carbon bike for my bikepacking bike. The frame bags and straps rub the frame too much.

    I’ve loved my one up dropper so far

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear it. This one has been nothing but problems. The design is awful. It requires the housing to move, rather than the inner cable. So if your frame routing doesn't allow the housing to move (like in this case), the dropper won't stay up with weight in it. It's been an example of one place that saving a buck doesn't pay off for us.

    is not an Ibis dealer within 850 miles of where I live. So my chances of trying one out is next to

    Awesome video, I've probably watched 10 times debating on the DV9! I'm at 5'8" and some change and only concerned with the short reach on the medium. That being said, I plan to run a 100mm fork which lengthens that a tad and going to likely run a 40-50 stem. Do you think a guy would be fine on a medium?

    Sounds like the complete opposite of my hardtail (Giant Talon), the Talon loses momentum badly on tech climbs and rock gardens in general, and is absolutely lifeless when you try to pump it or push it into a berm, and spends most of its time on chunky sections bottoming out the fork (its stock fork is a craptastic Suntour), I suspect the frame is simply too stiff. When I got my Trance it was like night and day, especially given the Trance's reputation for being quite poppy and playful. I still want an aggressive hardtail down the road for a second bike.

    Hey HP, I'm curious how you think the sergeant and dv9 vary in riding feel? Are they pretty similar just different weights? Thanks!

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Extremely different riding feel, they're not really in the same category except that they're both hardtails. The sergeant feels more like a Jeep. The DV9 feels like a Lotus. The sergeant is extremely versatile, and fun at long days in the saddle and exploring. The DV9 is zippy and quick and wants to see just how fast you can ride every flat and uphill section there is. The DV9 is a more exciting, energetic ride. Both are great bikes, it just depends on what feel you want.
      The Sergeant has pretty long chainstays, which makes carrying loads great, and makes for a super planted feel. The sergeant feels more durable and solid. The ibis begs you to pedal faster and faster. It's an incredible climber. The ibis is not nearly as versatile as the sergeant, regarding what wheel/tire setups you can run, but for its intended purpose it's way better at xc flowy trails.

    I've heard reviews saying that in the lowest gear the chain runs on the frame and you cant use like a chain guide protector as there isnt enough room?

    This looks like a great bike for the rolling single track we have around here Maryland. Just this afternoon I called the only dealer anywhere near me, and they are not close, and they said they don’t carry it and have no plans to. And like every other bike dealer he started telling me how I should really be looking at fs. I’m coming off a 2005 Felt RXC that I’ve ridden everywhere. I recently demoed a fs and it felt like I was driving a truck through the woods.
    Why is everyone pushing fs so hard.? I can’t even find hard tail bikes to demo.

      Great question. I wonder the same thing myself. A lot of shops push full suspension so hard!

      Online retailers like fanatik and Jensen have them, but that doesn't help you test ride one. I wonder if you could find someone local on mtbr who would let you throw a leg over it.

      @chesapeakeaerialphotollc5954 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I’m keeping my eyes out for one but hard tails around here are getting to be harder and harder to find and most that I see are older bikes like mine.
      A used Chamelion just popped up for sale near by. I just watched your review from a few years ago. We do have local Santa Cruz dealers but none of them carry the Chameleon. How would you compare the Chameleon to the DV9.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chesapeakeaerialphotollc5954 i compare the dv9 to the chameleon a couple times in this video. The dv9 is so new it'll be hard to find a used one. You can try pinkbike or mtbr classifieds.

      @@hardtailparty I just rewatched the video after making that comment and see that you do compare the two. The DV9 just looks like such a fun bike and probably more my style. Don't have much hope of finding a used one--especially around here. Thank for the feedback. Enjoy your videos.

    New video idea? How to make your hardtail softer on the trails. I got my a** kicked today on my hardtail. Need ideas on how to make it more comfortable?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's definitely a video I've got in the works. Quick tips: run tubeless, run wide tires, run lower tire pressure, learn to absorb impacts with your legs (getting light on the bike), slow down, and read the trail and pick perfect lines. There's a reason they say riding a Hardtail makes you a better rider. Where do you live and which hardtail do you ride?

      hardtail party thank you soooo much for the ideas. I tried to do a TH-cam search and nothing came up. With all your hardtail experience I figured you are definitely the guy to ask. It’s only fitting you nail a video on it before someone els lol anyways great videos keep them coming!

      sorry didn't read your full comment. I live in Yakima WA. I was riding Rocky Top, Yes very rocky lol . It dry desert land out in Eastern WA. The other side of the state is gorgeous with some of the best trails in the Pacific North west. Then I am about two hours from Hood River Oregon where they have amazing trails up in the forest. I get to ride lots of different types of trails. But at home its dry sharp rocks and powder fine dust/dirt.

      @@hardtailparty hardtail party I sold all my MTB stuff about two years ago. So I went down to the local bike shop and spent a lot to regain all my gear again and so that forced me to pick up a 2020 Marlin 5. do to budget reasons. So for this year that's what I will be riding till I can pick up a Santa Cruz hardtail next year or something along those lines. Never had a hardtail beat me up as much as this one has done. So at the moment its fully stock other then peddles. lol I am willing to upgrade things on the bike and keep the stock parts then when I go to sale it next year put the bike back to stock, I'll go check out the video Thank you again!
